The Indians designated second baseman Mark Grudzielanek for assignment, reports MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince. Grudzielanek, 40 in a few weeks, hit .273/.328/.273 in 119 plate appearances for the Tribe before suffering a hamstring injury Sunday. The Indians called up Anderson Hernandez to take his place. Hernandez was claimed off waivers from the Mets in March.

Burkhart
10 318 Dan Burkhart C Ohio State Ohio
Ohio State signed catcher Dan Burkhart before starting to recruit his Moeller High (Cincinnati) batterymate, Alex Wimmers. After hitting 10 homers as a sophomore, Burkhart has hit just one in 277 at-bats between the Cape Cod League and his junior season at Ohio State. Though he has a good lefthanded swing and a fine sense of the strike zone, he lacks bat speed and can’t turn around good fastballs. A good receiver with a fringe-average arm, he threw out 44 percent of basestealers this spring. Some scouts wonder if his 5-foot-11, 205-pound body could go south on him in a few years. Burkhart didn’t have the season scouts hoped for, but a lefthanded-hitting catcher who provides sound defense figures to go in the top 10 rounds.

BA has him at 88-90
Brandon Allen, rhp, Milton HS
Up next for the North team was the 6-foot-6, 190-pound Allen. Believe it or not, 6-foot-6 is actually small for the Allen family. Brandon’s father is Randy Allen, who played college basketball at Florida State and then in the NBA for the Sacramento Kings. Brandon’s brother, Adam, is a forward at Florida. Allen used his height well to drive his 88-90 mph fastballs on a downward plane to the plate. Allen mixed in a 74 mph curveball and a couple 80 mph changeups with some drop. He is committed to Auburn.

On a serious note, there was tough news in the Bochy family this week. Bruce Bochy traveled after Wednesday’s game at Houston to Pensacola, Fla., to be with his son, Brett, who learned he’d need Tommy John surgery to reconstruct his right elbow.

Brett Bochy is a redshirt junior pitcher at Kansas and was on his way to a high draft selection in June. In 12 appearances as the Jayhawks’ closer, he was 2-0 with a 0.78 ERA and had 34 strikeouts in 23 innings. Opponents had a .117 average against him.
After consulting with Dr. James Andrews, Brett underwent the procedure Friday morning. His mother is with him now, and his dad is making sure to provide support however he can.
One way he bucked up Brett’s spirits: By having Brian Wilson give him a ring. If you’ll remember, the Giants drafted Wilson out of LSU knowing that he was having Tommy John surgery. Obviously, he’s throwing 96 mph and making millions now. That qualifies as light at the end of the tunnel, right?

At least no Rowand.

This is how I’m starting to see it – it does no good to have a pristine defense behind our pitchers if the pitcher only gives up 1 run and our lousy offense scores 0. I’d rather give up a run or two in the hopes that some of the less than stellar defenders can make it up by actually scoring a few.

Keith law turns into brown lover over night

Keith law wrote a column today titled “MLB draft first-day winners and losers” and under the “Best” section he had this to say:

I’m not a huge Gary Brown fan — his problems hitting with wood last summer concern me — but that speed is a great fit for the giant outfield in San Francisco. His glove will likely justify the everyday job if he can hit enough to hold it.

"The criticism was so brutal that Sabean was forced to declare, at a press conference, "I am not an idiot." Thus, the pattern of Sabean's relationship to his critics was established."

Kyle Wilson 2B/SS North Carolina State N.C.
N.C. State’s top position player is Wilson, a switch-hitter and plus runner who set the school stolen-base record with 30 in 2009 but didn’t hit enough to get drafted. He moved to center field this spring and hit .381 but had just 12 steals thanks to a hip injury. Initially diagnosed as a groin pull, it turned out to be a stress reaction in his pelvis. He won’t need surgery, but he will need rest and may not be able to do more than DH after signing. He hadn’t played in the field since April.

Bonds stands alone.
