Open Draft Thread: Day Two
I'm kind of hoping for another pick of Diego Seastrunk. The Giants don't take no for an answer, Mr. Seastrunk.

I have no idea what he did this year, but I was really hoping they would sign Seastrunk last time around.

..
You can draft JC at any time. Depending on age, you can draft college sophomores, however juniors and seniors are always in play
I didn’t know about the age issue. I just thought if you went to a 4-year then you HAD to wait till after your 3rd year.

I like anchovies, but not on pizza. In that context, I find they overwhelm the other flavors.

It’s a matter of quantity. If you treat anchovies like pepperoni, then the flavor is overwhelmed, but a small piece of anchovy per slice is delicious.

Now that Sabes is off the board
OK, Gary Brown was obviously BS’s pick. It shouldn’t have surprised us. Sabes always has the final say and huge input into the 1st round, and he loves him some speedy athletic CFers with high batting averages. Besides, BS scouted this kid all the way back in the Cape Cod League last summer.
Now we can shunt BS to the buffet table, and be thankful that we have men like Barr and Tidrow, and our scouting staff to pick the rest of the way. Although, BS will have 1 or 2 ’special" picks.

My updated draft board
I made this list to include guys I liked that were very likely to be there when the Giants picked in the first 4 rounds. Apparently the pros liked them so much that they had to take 10 of them off my board in the first round. While that wasn’t a surprise for Colon, Covey, Loux, and Ranaudo, the other 6 really shot up the board.
1. Christian Colon (SS – R/R) 21.0 >>>>> Royals (#4)
2. Dylan Covey (RHP) 18.9 >>>>> Brewers (#14)
3. James Paxton (LHP) 21.7
4. Barret Loux (RHP) 21.1 >>>>> D’Backs (#6)
5. Anthony Ranaudo (RHP) 20.7 >>>>> Red Sox (#39)
6. Cody Buckle (RHP) 17.9
7. Cam Bedrosian (RHP) 18.6 >>>>> Angels (#29)
8. Tyler Holt (CF – R/R) 21.2
9. Rob Segedin (3B – R/R) 21.6
10. Mike Olt (3B – R/R) 21.8 >>>>> Rangers (#49)
11. Hunter Morris (1B – L/R) 21.7
12. Garin Cecchini (OF – L/R) 19.2
13. Mike Foltynewicz (RHP) 18.6 >>>>> Astros (#19)
14. Drew Vettleson (OF – L/R) 18.9 >>>>> Rays (#42)
15. Mike Lorenzen (CF – R/R) 18.2
16. Jake Skole (OF – R/R) 18 >>>>> Rays (#17)
17. Peter Tago (RHP) 17.9 >>>>> Rockies (#47)
18. Chad Lewis (3B – R/R) 18.4
19. Vince Velazquez (RHP) 18.0

Updated list
I’m going to move Tyler Holt down the list, because we now have Brown at the same postion and age. I still like Holt better, but when would he get playing time between Brown, Peguero, JCP, and Darren Ford?
I’m going to put Reggie Golden in Holt’s spot. He’s and intriguing blend of athleticism and 4 above-average tools. Beside’s the Giants have a good history with Alabama outfiledrs (Mays, McCovey, Irvin). I’m also going to add Adrelton Simmons down near the bottom of my list. Simmons is one of the best pure defensive shortstops in the draft. He’s a native of the Caribbean Island of Curacao, and he has a promising, if raw, bat.
Here it is:
1. James Paxton (LHP) 21.7
2. Cody Buckle (RHP) 17.9
3. Rob Segedin (3B – R/R) 21.6
4. Hunter Morris (1B – L/R) 21.7
5. Garin Cecchini (OF – L/R) 19.2
6. Mike Lorenzen (CF – R/R) 18.2
7. Andrelton Simmons (SS – R/R) 20
8. Chad Lewis (3B – R/R) 18.4
9. Vince Velazquez (RHP) 18.0
10. Tyler Holt (CF – R/R) 21.2
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
I liked Holt when I saw him. Good plate discipline, good defense, nice swing, hits solid line drives. I would’ve probably preferred him to Brown, but what do I know?

in fact, I wrote about him here after the game
He got out Virginia’s First Team All-American, Jarrett Parker, twice, including a strike out on a really nice curveball. Parker had a pretty lousy game for someone who’s a potential first-round pick – 0-5 with three strike outs. What’s more, he looked overmatched at the plate. If I hadn’t already known he was an All-American, I wouldn’t have guessed.

Parker
Baseball America had him ranked as the 41st overall player. Didn’t hit much in Cape Cod and got off to a slow start, but turned it on later in the year. Summary of their scouting report – a risky pick with very significant upside.
Parker is just Gary Brown from the left hand side

Um, no.
Not nearly as fast, much bigger frame, much higher strikeout and walk rates, very sound mechanics.
Other than being a center fielder, they’re not much alike at all.
Not that that makes this a pick to like, but come on, you’re smarter than to make such a generalization.

where's the raw power? This is a crazy-bad pick - makes Brown pick look like genius!
Tyler Holt had more HRs, and a higher SLG from the leadoff spot – while playing stellar D and stealing 29 of 31 bases, at the premium position of CF. Holt starred for Team USA using a wooden bat against elite pitching, while Parker was struggling mightily at the same time in the Cape Cod League while using wood bats. This year, Holt easily outperformed Parker while playing against the same competition in the ACC.
Parker has 2 above-average tools – plus D in CF, plus speed. Everything else grades out as average at best.

I’m speaking of advanced college power bats at the corner IF/OF spots. None of the power guys that we got last year can be considered to be anything like a fast-track guy (unless you want to say Belt is a power bat).

This draft is simply not spectacular in the college power bats category. I guess the Giants just decided to go defense and speed and hope for the best. I dunno. I’m not a professional scout.

From BA
Carter Jurica, who could go in the seventh to 10th round, is the best 2010 prospect on the state’s lone NCAA regional team. He’s a 5-foot-11, 185-pounder with solid if not spectacular all-around tools. He has a sound righthanded stroke with some pop, good plate discipline and slightly above-average speed. He gets the job done as a college shortstop, but his range and arm may be better suited for second base or a utility role in pro ball.
WTF is going on?

Plus speed~
Jurica has always had the right tools to succeed (plus speed, enough pop to keep good pitching honest, impressive athleticism), so it’s no shock to see him finally put it all together in 2010. I like him more than most, but still believe he’s a player who will need a healthy number of at bats in the low minors before figuring things out professionally.

Those of you bitching about this being a “classic Sabean draft” should probably keep in mind that most major league GMs have virtually no involvement after the first round.
Most GM’s don’t give Zito 128 million dollars either.

we drafted a set-up man
181. Seth Rosin, rhp
Minnesota
Few pitchers who are Rosin’s size (6-foot-6, 245 pounds) can match his body control. He repeats his delivery and throws strikes so easily that he posted one of the top K-BB ratios (82-10 in 87 regular-season innings) in NCAA Division I this spring. Rosin topped out at 96 mph in the Cape Cod League last summer and has pitched at 91-92 mph with a peak of 94 this spring. His fastball is pretty straight, which makes it easier to throw for strikes but also easier to hit. His curveball and changeup have improved but still are fringy, and he’s going to need more fastball life and better secondary pitches to miss bats in pro ball. He may fit better in the bullpen, where he would project as a possible set-up man.

Doesn’t this seem like the type of pitcher scouts drool over and a team like the Giants can fix to up the velo and develop at least one fantastic out pitch? Shades of John Lackey, maybe?
Doesn't need velo help - only needs to develop a breaking ball
His FB + change are above-average to plus pitches already.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
The trick with Rosin is that he’s talented enough to be a major league starter, but he’s closer to the big leagues as a reliever because he lacks a breaking ball. The imaginative scout might dream about this guy with a breaking ball, with his plus command, winning big as a starter.
The impatient organizational man might say, give me the arm, give me the change-up, give me the control, and let me pay him cheap in the bullpen instead of overpaying some 30-year free agent. Both arguments have their merit, and Rosin complicates the issue, simply because he was so good with other weapons without his top velocity in a big game.
Hopefully the Giants try to make it stick at starter
I don’t think we have any need to rush him as a reliever.

Parker writeup
41. Jarrett Parker, of
Virginia
Parker was a key player in Virginia’s College World Series run in 2009, and he looked like a likely first-rounder with his body and track record. He slowed down by the time the Cavaliers arrived in Omaha, though, and he hit just .188 in the Cape Cod League. He got off to a slow start in 2010, and his stock continued to fall. His average dipped below .300 for some time, though he turned it on as the draft approached, raising his line to .322/.414/.574 with seven home runs in mid-May. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Parker would be the final product if someone were asked to draw up the body of a major league outfielder with his long, lean frame. He’s a good defender in center field with plus speed and an average arm. At the plate, Parker’s strength and leverage give him good raw power. Against Duke this season he crushed a hanging changeup that one-hopped an office building in right field at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, which is also home of the Triple-A franchise. Parker’s long arms do make him prone to a long swing and high strikeout numbers, and most scouts think he won’t hit for a very high average. He would benefit from shortening up his swing and utilizing his speed more. Many hoped for a better season out of him and see him as a risky pick, but there’s a lot of upside as well. He could go in the sandwich round, though it’s possible that he could slide into the second round.

Really feels like they’re drafting for need. Rowand’s contract is up in two and a half years (and he probably won’t last that long), Torres is already 32, McBryde/Ford/Peguero are horrible …. so they’re trying to come up with a center fielder who might be able to arrive in a hurry.

Rosin - This is the first pick that I like
Here’s a
great scouting report from the game that he threw against CSUFullerton last Friday night (shut them down on 1 run, 1 BB, 7 K).
http://baseballbeginnings.com/2010/06/06/seth-rosin-update-2/#more-7313
Some quotes:
You have to have something to walk into Cal State Fullerton and shut down a lineup with an automatic first-round pick, shut up a traditionally loud and feisty crowd, and shut out a strike zone that usually finds a way to shrink.
He’s a big guy and you can’t miss it. At 6-foot-7 and 230, the first thing I noticed in the bullpen was that Rosin was trimmer. He’s still going to benefit from pro-level conditioning. He’ll never be a rail, but you don’t want that. Rosin’s strength is to be a big, innings-eating Midwestern ox. He’s an old-fashioned plow horse, physically built with wide hips, strong thighs and broad shoulders.
Rosin’s fastball control is so developed at this stage that it negates the need for a breaking ball in college baseball, which if he’s going to be a pro starter, he’s got to have. If you’re going to pitch out of the bullpen at the big league level, you need two pitches, but as former Arizona closer Jason Stoffel told Baseball Beginnings in 2009, "If you’re going to have two pitches, they better be pretty damn good."
his fastball command is the best right-handed power command I think I have seen in this draft cycle. It is by far the most consistent. That basically allows him to use his two-seam as one pitch, climb the ladder with the four-seam, and then reach back to his Midwestern roots, stamp his heel and snort, and throw high gas at the letters with a message that belies a baby face and says words I can’t print on this web site.

At this point I have to imagine drafting Wilson is just a waste of time. He won’t sign for anything close to slot money as a later round pick, and while signing him way over slot may be helpful because you get to spend earlier picks on other kids, he probably won’t take the bait.

He also didn’t pitch during his senior season in high school, due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee that he injured during prep football. Hembree made only one appearance at South Carolina, recording one out, then went to Spartanburg Methodist JC and transferred to College of Charleston, getting irregular work as the Cougars’ closer. Scouts weren’t happy with how he was used, though it’s hard to argue with Charleston’s 40-win season and regional berth. Hembree displayed mid- to upper 90s velocity, regularly hitting 98 mph and sitting in the 94-96 mph range. He has a long, lean pitcher’s body at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds with wide shoulders, as well as a clean arm action. His secondary pitch is a slider that flashes mid-80s power potential. Much of Hembree’s game is raw. His fastball tends to straighten out at higher velocity, and he has proved hittable due to spotty command. He doesn’t have a pitch to combat lefthanded hitters, though some think his power repertoire and big hands make him an excellent future candidate for a split-finger fastball. Hembree’s modest numbers and inexperience may slot him behind college closers such as Texas Tech’s Chad Bettis or Florida’s Kevin Chapman, but his pure arm and velocity are as good as the college ranks have to offer this season.

I would love to take Lorenzen in rd. 6
He’s worth around $1M to buy him out of Fulleton commit.
A true 5-tool talent that can play any OF position, and 3B. And he’s still growing.
Every tool is a plus right now, although some scouts worry about his ability to hit for average or power as he progresses. He is an extremely smart kid, both in school and on the field. Works at his game constantly, and is a winner.

Mike Kickham, lhp
Missouri State
Missouri State has produced six big league pitchers (Ross Detwiler, Jeff Gray, Shaun Marcum, Matt Palmer, John Rheinecker, Brad Ziegler) and two first-round arms (Detwiler, Brett Sinkbeil) in the last decade. The Bears have another quality pitching prospect—it’s just not who scouts expected. Aaron Meade was coming off a strong sophomore season and summer in the Cape Cod League, but fellow lefthander Kickham has surpassed him. Missouri State didn’t recruit him out of a local Springfield, Mo., high school, and he didn’t turn any heads while going 3-3, 5.62 at Crowder (Mo.) JC in 2009. When his velocity increased to the high 80s in the MINK League last summer, the Bears offered him the opportunity to transfer. Kickham’s fastball has continued to improve, sitting at 90-92 mph and touching 94 consistently throughout the spring. A strong 6-foot-4, 210-pounder, he backs up his fastball with a true slider that has good depth. He also throws a solid changeup and an overhand curveball. Scouts like his size, stuff and command, but also wonder why that hasn’t translated into more success, as he went 4-9, 5.25 in 15 starts. Though he’s a draft-eligible sophomore, he’s expected to go high enough in the draft to sign. Kickham’s twin brother Dan, a righthander who helped pitch Crowder to the Junior College World Series, also has seen his velocity spike this spring and should get drafted in the later rounds.
This sounds really good for a 6th round pick.

Chuckie Jones keeps fine company. He’s the state’s high school player of the year, following in the footsteps of pitchers Tim Melville and Jacob Turner, both of whom turned pro for seven-figure bonuses. He’s committed to Maple Woods CC, the program that also launched the careers of Albert Pujols and Logan Morrison. A 6-foot-3, 230-pound outfielder, Jones stands out for his raw righthanded power and has solid hitting ability, speed and arm strength. His swing can get long at times, though he does a good job of making adjustments at the plate.

Good stuff about Gary Brown
4. Hidden stars
Beyond Harper — and, to a lesser extent, Taillon and prep shortstop Manny Machado, who went to the Orioles with the No. 3 pick — this draft had a much-discussed lack of likely future stars. The one player, according to Perkin, who could wind up being the best player taken Monday night was Cal-State Fullerton outfielder Gary Brown, who was chosen by the Giants at No. 24. "They usually go for a quick-to-the-majors pitcher, like a Tim Lincecum, but I think Brown is a great pick," says Perkin. "He has electric talent, he’s very fast, he’s an impact player and he projects to be a much better hitter than people think. I think he’ll be the one people will look at 10 years from now and ask why there were 23 players picked in front of him."

No, not at all. They started with the minimum acceptable major-league walk rate, then worked backward to basically project that into the NCAA. But that assumes a completely normal plate-discipline development path. Obviously Brown is going to have to have an abnormal plate-discipline development path if he’s ever going to make it to the majors. That study tells us nothing about how possible that is.
he walked at CSF in fresh, soph seasons, he walked some more in Cap the brother can handle this. Let him slump in pro ball and he will pull a BCrawford and walk since he cant hit

That's definitely an exaggeration
He doesn’t walk a lot, but he doesn’t have a crappy batting eye – he doesn’t strike out very much either. And a lot of his value is going to come on defense, hopefully, even if he can’t figure out how to walk and the power never comes along.
And team speed helps, I guess, although I think Earl Weaver had it right on team speed.

I've seen it
I’m not saying he’s going to be great, obviously his walk rate is a problem. But it’s not enough to dismiss him out of hand, immediately. You can’t just say “he sucks”.
Again, if he can hit .300 with a little power and play stellar centerfield defense, that is very valuable, even if he doesn’t walk much. That’s definitely far down the line and not a sure thing, but I don’t think you can write him off.

26. Ohio State JR C Dan Burkhart
Despite being a legitimate pro prospect in his own right, his biggest claim to fame may be convincing best friend and potential first rounder Alex Wimmers to join him for three years in Columbus. Burkhart is yet another good defensive catcher with a good batting eye and a questionable power ceiling. His scouting reports and his numbers come very close to Kevan Smith’s, but Burkhart’s higher probability of contributing gives him the edge over Smith’s higher upside. Burkhart also receives high marks for being one of the few catchers in the college game trusted to call his own pitches.
I suspect that Crawford and the other
infielders in the system feel pretty good right about now.

Grudzielanek, 40 in a few weeks, hit .273/.328/.273 in 119 plate appearances for the Tribe before suffering a hamstring injury Sunday. The Indians called up Anderson Hernandez to take his place. Hernandez was claimed off waivers from the Mets in March.
