Christian Colon

I don’t know anything about any prospects.

The Giants don’t fare well against pitchers.

It seems to me that Ranaudo and Harvey will be gone.

I’ve also heard rumors tracing Biddle to the Brewers in the first round. I bet they take Harvey at 14 if he’s there, but I’m not sure Biddle gets to us in the second round.

I think they will take either Colon or Sale (if he is still on the board)

I am not sure about Cabrera. Seems kind of old for a high school player. He will be 20 in September!

I’d love Sale, but I don’t think he drops to us. I think Colon’s the best pick, even though his Boras-ness could make things… interesting. Plan C. is Austin Wilson, at least in my mind. I know this draft is shallow in hitters and deep in pitching, but we really do need some lumber.

Chris Sale, the pitcher, will probably be gone in the first 10 picks. The DBacks and Indians are looking at the trio of Harvey, Pomeranz and Sale. They might buck the trend and take a position player. The Astros are in love with Sale. They might take Deshields, but then the other Sale will likely go to the Jays.

Bummed out if we don’t draft him at 25 though. Seems that we value Cabrera’s bat over any other teams out there. Yet many others are interested in Colon.

C’mon, if there was a scout/GM that could identify the PBA at more than a 10% success ratio, he’d be a god by now.

This ain’t the football draft where you have a pretty good chance of identifying the PBA in the first few rounds. Take a look at the history of the baseball draft, even teams that use the PBA philosophy have no better success ratio than the other teams.

The best thing to do get a good mix of high-risk, high-reward prospects with steadier, high-floor, low-risk guys – and a good mix of HS kids and college guys. And don’t be afraid of taking chances on guys that appear to be very difficult to sign in the mid rounds (7 to 20).

by Fla-Giant on Jun 7, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll give you an example. The NY Times had an article today about the first 6 picks of the 1992 draft the Yankees picked Derek Jeter at #6. The 5 guys picked in front of him were: Phil Nevin, Paul Shuey, B.J. Wallace, Jeff Hammonds, and Chad Mottola, by the Astros, Indians, Expos, O’s and Reds.

Now, are you going to tell me that those 5 other teams didn’t think they were choosing the “Best Player Available”?

You can do a similar list in almost every year the draft has been around.

Given the number of picks Texas has I would be surprised if they went for a big bonus guy, especially with the sale going on, but they do have a history of drafting expensive guys. Yes, he already has better range, and hands than about 30% of the shortstops starting in the majors right now – including Uribe and Renteria of the Giants.

Here’s the stats for the entire Team USA last summer. Note the HRs and slugging, and SBs from Colon, with no drop in avg or OBP. Also, note how well Tyler Holt did. If we can get Colon at #24 and Holt in round 2 or 3 it would be a coup.

Just close your eyes and imagine the top 4 hitters in our lineup at the end of 2012 being Holt, Colon, Posey, and Panda – that would be a dream come true. And the D up the middle would be way above-average. And don’t get me started on the OBP of the first 3 guys – talk about setting the table!

Good news on Colon?

I just found this thread – good idea. I’ll post a couple of comments here that I had already posted on an older thread.

If Colon gets by the A’s at #10, then there’s a growing consensus that there’s a good chance he falls all the way to the mid-20s. Apparently, neither the Reds nor the Astros want to spend much over slot with their picks in the teens, and they’re worried that Colon will be difficult due to his ties to Boras. This may be one time when Boras’s reputation helps us?

Also, I once again have to voice my serious doubts over the Yordy Cabrera consensus i the updated mocks. I first saw that suggestion come out about 10 days ago. It’s just so much against Sabes’s MO to let it get out so early. If he really loves Cabrera, you would never see him linked to us. When you’re picking at #24 you’re too worried that somebody will swoop in and steal him from you. This looks like the standard mis-direction from the braintrust

Ranaudo

I’m actually glad it looks like we’re dodging the Ranaudo bullet (fingers crossed).

Here’s an updated scouting report, from a scout I respect, that saw him pitch at UCLA this weekend. He really panned him, and it had nothing to do with his injury – pertinent quote:

Ranaudo’s arm speed was too slow to belong with some of the better high school power arms I have seen this year. He would not belong in the same conversation with pitchers like Tago, Covey, Allie, Taillon or Walker. As far as college pitchers go, he lacks the power of a Jake Thompson, the control of a Seth Rosin, or the pitch-ability of a Seth Blair

The Callis mock that you linked to is definitely the most entertaining one I’ve seen so far. It has several names coming out of left field (no pun intended!).

The biggest surprise by far is Jake Skole going off at #15, and Boston eyeing him at #20. Now that would be a meteoric rise! This is the first time that I’ve seen his name surface anywhere in the national media. You got to admit, I was the first one to tag him as a rising sleeper – when nobody else had even heard of him.

He also has Peter Tago going at #18, and Drew Vettleson up to #28 – which are huge jumps up the board.

by wcw on Jun 7, 2010 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re probably right about Colon not being there at #24. However, you’re wrong about his range and hands in comparison to Rent. Colon’s range is better now that Rent’s and his hands are his #1 asset – both defensively and offensively.

He has soft and sure hands at SS – that’s why every report says “he catches everything that he ges to”. His strong and quick hands are where he generates most of his bat speed from.

The 2 big knocks against Colon are arm strength and range. I agree he has slightly below-average arm strength for a major league SS, but his pre-throw footwork make that less of an issue. I watched every play that he made in the 3 games this past weekend, and he has better than average ranged at SS due to his very quick feet and he’s so smart and intuitive that he always seems to be right where the ball is hit.

I think I may not hate Rent’s range as much as most. he’s slipped from the days when it was a plus skill, but I still see his range as league-average, which is a lot more than Uribe can offer.

and hey, maybe Colon falls and we snag him. arm strength is nice, but if his skills are as you describe, turning him into a defense-first 2b like prime-era Mark Ellis is hardly the end of the world.

Right now: he’s hit 16 HRs in 60 games - which translates to over 40 HRs in a full MLB season (154 starts)

Right now: he’s slugging .621 - which would put him on an elite level even for MLB 3rd basemen!

Who'd-a-thunk it?

Remember the Pirates were heavlily criticized last year for taking BC catcher Tony Sancez at numer 4? He was described as an above average defensive guy with a good arm, but not a MLB-worthy bat. Well, just the opposite has proven true this year:

Sanchez is batting a robust .318/.423/.460 in the Florida State League (high A), showing patience and gap power. However, his defense – at times praised more than his bat entering last year’s draft – has really lagged behind. Sanchez has thrown out just 7 runners in 50 basestealing attempts, and leads the league with seven errors.

A 22 year old man OPSing at a .880-level in high A, is not that impressive to me – although it is more acceptable for a C. Brandon Belt was drafted more than 100 places behind Sanchez, is a similar age, and look what he’s doing at high A.

I can't see him dropping past the 1st supplemental.

Why not?

Because we already have Buster?

That's part of it

Plus I just don’t think he’s that great of a prospect-and with Buster he doesn’t really fit with the Giants. Plus I’d be pretty surprised if he lasted past the Red Sox.

Only about 6 more minutes until we have to put up with 3 hours of Bud Selig mangling name and words – and looking like a doofus.

he’s got Boras for an agent.

Who will be the 1st MLB.com analyst to criticize a pick?

My guess is that only Mayo may (he’s probably still ashamed over last year). Reynolds and Gammons – not a chance.
