I, for one, am shocked that the Giants didn't score more than a single run off of Jon Lester.

There's nothing new in their inability

to play well against good or high-payroll teams. The part that’s really troubling now is that the starting pitching is showing signs of being overrated.

The team for 2010 was built on the assumption that a top-flight pitching staff could make up for a mediocre offense containing one breakout player. Well, the breakout player has eaten his way to mediocrity, and the pitching staff has seen Affeldt and Romo head downhill this year. Add to that the bad news that Lincecum got his money and lost his head, and Cain and Zito can get hammered by bad teams, and what you’re left with is a staff that can’t prop up the team anymore.

Yes, it was fun seeing the Huff/Torres/Burrell show for a couple of weeks. But a sure way to kill that buzz is with a Bochy-instigated run of Renteria/Rowand/Molina games, coupled with Torres finally cooling off and Pablo being Pablo this year, and what you’re left with is a team that will be .500 at the break and out of contention for the division.

I hope Tim and Jeremy enjoyed their paychecks this year.

They're no where near as good as the Cards, and

Tim’s “dry spell” has been going on for a while now. I leave Cain out of this because he gets no run support and can be excused a bad game or two. But Zito got clobbered by the Astros and had no stuff at all, and Tim’s putting way too many guys on base over the last two months.

Simply put, would you rather have Carpenter/Wainwright or Lincecum/Zito at the top of your rotation, now and for the rest of this year?

Matt Cain's drinking buddy

by Buck Henry on Jun 27, 2010 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

That seems like a false premise, because everyone knows that (regardless of lineup order), Lincecum/Cain are the Giants top two starters.

Tim's game against the Astros...

was up to standards. I think a combination of the heat and an increase in the velocity of his fastball led to problems with his command. (Yes, I do mean increase. He started out the game at 93-94 mph. That’s way higher than his previous starts.) Thus, in my grand conclusion, I believe that Lincecum is getting back on track.

Nothing personal . . .

. . . but this gets tiresome. If I buy many boxes of paper clips from Acme Clips, Inc. over the years, and, being anal-compulsive, count the contents of each, and always get between 97 and 102, then I get a couple of boxes with 83 and 81, but then the next has 101, do I conclude that Acme has gone over to the dark side and is now screwing its customers regulary? Or do I suspect a transient mechanical defect on the production line? Especially when I read of “recent mechanical problems at noted stationery company factory repaired”? Hey, that last 101-count box was, well, just one box: SSS! Right?

Professional baseball analyst since 1980.

by owlcroft on Jun 28, 2010 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

You're vastly overstating the credentials of Edgar Renteria

OPS+ by season: 103, 80, 88, 84, 92, 77, 113, 130, 88, 89, 104, 124, 83, 66

This year, he’s at 120. What numbers are the outliers there?

By the way, I was just saying that there’s no way you can make a judgment on Renteria 125 PAs into the season. Do you disagree with that? His current BABIP is .398, which is 80 points over his career mark. Do you think he can possibly sustain that?

You’re right about one thing. This is getting tiresome.

GROUGTHINK ALERT
The first Chester Arthur fanboy ever.

by groug on Jun 28, 2010 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you missed the point.

The point is not that Renteria’s 2010 YTD stats are what we expect him to produce, or to maintain going forward. That was why the analogy, which I hoped was clear enough. The point is that there is no reason to disbelieve that Renteria is sufficiently healthy to play at the levels one would expect from his career, especially excepting from that career the two injury-affected seasons.

His career BABIP is .319, including those years. If he achieves that, with his power and walks rates about at his career levels—or, more simply put—just produces at his career-average level, he is a valuable middle infielder. His current output is, to repeat, not set forth as demonstrative of his level, but as evidentiary that there is no reason to doubt he can indeed produce at his career-average levels. (Yes, he is 34, so there will be a little decline; on the other hand, the base from which that small decline would be measured includes the artificial and nontrivial lowering from the two injury years.)

The question is simple enough: do Renteria’s 2010 numbers suggest that he is the Renteria of the cumulative years prior to 2008, or the Renteria of 2008 and 2009? That sems a clear, straightforward question, and I submit that it has a clear, straightforward answer.

Professional baseball analyst since 1980.

by owlcroft on Jun 28, 2010 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I submit the opposite. 125 PA’s of BABIP are meaningless. 125 PA’s of K rate, BB rate, and Isolated Power/Power Factor are slightly less meaningless.

If we just ignore his BABIP, than Renteria’s year is much more similar to his 2009 than to the rest of his career. His K/BB has remained consistent over the past 7 years, and this year is no different. But the utter lack of power that he’s showing right now is similar to what he did last year, not to his career norms. His .079 IsoSLG is only .001 point above his 2009 IsoSLG, and about .050 points below what he averaged in the 5 years before 2009. Right now, it seems to me that the evidence suggests that Renteria is the same as he was last year.

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jun 29, 2010 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Let's look:

Just projecting from his entire career, without attempting to adjust in any way for the tainted 2008/2009 stats, we would expect him to now have 33 hits with 6 doubles, no triples, and 2 home runs; in fact, he has 38 hits (owing to a high BABIP), 2 doubles, no triples, and 1 home run. In brief, he is short exactly one home run from expectations, and that over 104 at-bats. I would not call that some drastic falling-off of power, but it can look like it to the casual eye, because the “extra” base hits from BABIP deceptively reduce his Power Factor (and thus his slugging average):

45 TB / 33 H = 1.36 PF career (actually 1.39, but rounding errors in projection are the difference)

  47 TB / 38 H = 1.24 PF in 2010

See? More hits, more total bases, expected number of doubles, only one short (so far) on home runs, but you would “punish” him for his good fortune in getting a few extra “luck” singles. And while we’re at it, expected walks 10; actual walks, 11. I’d say that all in all, that’s awfully good agreement between expectations from career and actual results.

Professional baseball analyst since 1980.

by owlcroft on Jun 29, 2010 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

How is that the expected number of doubles? He should have 6, and he has 2. That’s especially low considering the high BABIP.

I was promised lasagna.

it's up to Giants fans to drown that out

..saying that, it didn’t seem as bad as 2004. Red Sox fan here, and I was at those games. It was astonishing how many Red Sox fans turned up for that. Giants ST holders screwed the team by scalping their tickets in that series.

As for Red Sox fans being jackasses, I don’t disagree but I saw more fights that series than I’ve ever seen at 24 Mays and plenty were instigated by Giants fans, including a five minute epic in the club section that went on and on because police don’t expect fights in the club section!

a five minute epic in the club section

but I’ve been surprised at the number of hooligans I’ve seen the few times I’ve been in or near the club level. I thought the whole point of that area was to get away from the hoi palloi, but it seems like the various palloi are buying their way up.

I’m pretty horrified at how much VB seats cost when I get them, so I’m even more amazed at the amount of money people will pay to get into the club level, and then drink and fight their way right out of the park. Weird.

When Lincecum came to the majors he was a power pitcher who easily threw 95 mph. He propelled his fastball past people because it was a real heater and because it had a late jump to it. Guys could not catch up to that jump. The jump is gone.

Now, I’m going to make the harshest criticism of Lincecum. He has become a trick pitcher. He tries to set up batters with a fastball, but he wants to get them out with the changeup. He is a breaking-ball/changeup pitcher. He is a trick pitcher, a cutie pie. All that wonderful gas and that command and that domination are in absentia.

I wouldn’t call Burriss a prospect and the thing that worries me about Bond is he has absolutely no power. I think I heard people saying he is a David Eckstein type of guy with worse defense. by sanfrankid on Jun 27, 2010 7:52 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

We all know Tim’s stuff is tremendous and he can still be an all star pitcher with a low nineties fastball, but we’re kidding ourselves if we think the loss of velocity doesn’t make him a less effective pitcher. Do you think Big Papi could go up there today and sit on a changeup if Timmy could still throw 97mph? The loss of velocity allows hitters to go up there and think offspeed, because they know they can foul off his 92 mph fastball, until they get the pitch that they want. And if he’s lost a good 5mph off his heater over the last couple of years, why wouldn’t he lose another 5 mph two years from now?

Buster Posey: "I'm a catcher." Brian Sabean: "I'm an idiot."

depends on his movement…. If he’s going to stay on top, he’s got to further develop his pitches – I think he’s in a bit of a pitcher’s no-man’s land right now

by jponry on Jun 27, 2010 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

The average velocity might be only 3 mph off, but that high end heater is gone. I was at a game in his rookie year when he fanned Carlos Beltran on a 99 mph fastball. That’s what made his other pitches unhittable. Somebody just said he’s still The Freak. Actually, what made him “The Freak” was that he was so small and had such a big fastball. He’s no longer that pitcher, and now he’s going to have to adjust to being merely mortal. The great movement on his other pitches is still there, so he’ll still be a top starter, but on those days he’s not locating and hanging pitches he’s going to take a beating.

Buster Posey: "I'm a catcher." Brian Sabean: "I'm an idiot."

Exciting game in Salem

The Volacnoes just ccompleted a come-from-behind 6-5 win. Alex Burg hit a 2-out, 2 run double in the bottom of the 9th to supply the heroics.

Kevin Couture, the recent USC draftee, came on in relief with 1 out and the bases loaded in the top of the 8th. He proceeded to K the first batter and induced the 2nd batter to ground out to SS, but Jurica booted the ball and a run scored to put the Volcanoes down 5-4.

Slug-Fest in Kanapolis

Lots of dingerz for the Giants in the minors today, and not just at Fresno.

Culberson hit his 10th in SJ’s win, and 4 Greenjackets went deep in an absolute barn-burner in North Carolina that Augusta ended up winning 17-14 (after trailing 14-11 heading into the 7th). ToJo hit his 7th, Anders hit his 9th (a grand salami), Cavan hit his 5th, and Dominguez hit his 11th (a 3-run bomb in the top of the 9th to put Augusta ahead for good).

Tomorrow I wouldn’t care, I don’t have to leave the house. Today I have to drive down to South Sac / Elk Grove for a class I’m taking.

The tomatoes could use the help, 1 freaking teeny tiny tomato on 2 huge plants. No flowers either, same with the pepper plants. I’m thinking they aren’t getting enough sun.

hmmm

how much sun do they get?

Are you getting no blossoms at all, or are they dropping off before anything happens (and leaving little stems)?

The peppers nothing at all, the ‘matoes the dropping off thing. I moved them to a different spot on the patio, so the tomatoes are now getting at least 3-4 hours of sun a day, the peppers 2-3. I just fertilized them both this weekend, I’ve grown tomatoes and peppers back there before, but the trees have grown a bit so I’m guessing there’s more shade now.

that's not a ton of sun for tomatoes

but probably more than mine get in SF! Although I gave up this year- not a lot of economic sense in that enterprise for us.

Anyway, blossom drop is kind of a pain. If you are getting few blossoms even for your plants, you might be overfertilizing, especially if your container soil had fertilizer in the first place. Maybe cut back on that a bit?

If that doesn’t help IIRC blossom drop can be a problem with irregular watering (which in turn is kind of a function of containers, esp. plastic because they dry out so fast. You know, what with living in an oven and all. I had lousy luck in Oakland when I lived in a west-facing condo- always either too hot or too cold.

Peppers probably aren’t getting enough sun. I have not had a ton of luck with them over the years, although they grow as a perennial in our side yard (with teeny peppers). If you are growing bell peppers you might try banana/Anaheim/etc. peppers next year because they set faster from planting.

Thanks for the advice. I planted, I think 4 kinds of peppers: bell, serrano, thai dragons, and something else. We had a serrano plant that did really well for us, it was in a shadier spot than these are and produced peppers for us, year round, for 3 years!

I seem to recall the tomatoes not doing so well last summer so I changed the location this year. It’s always been a challenge, our patio faces east, we are surrounded by redwoods and some other deciduous trees I don’t recognize (so I know what they aren’t: maple, oak, birch…) One of them might be an elm.

you might also try

cherry tomatoes, since they too take less time to set/ripen. Are you growing short-season tomatoes (i.e. Early Girl or similar) or Ace or heirlooms or something that takes 90 days? There are a lot of cherry tomato varieties that might work better for you.

I don’t know about the thai peppers; I’d guess they need a lot of sun/heat but I dunno. Definitely ditch the bell peppers for italian or other banana-type sweet peppers next year. I’ve had pretty good luck with jalapenos too.

I stopped paying attention to that game after the 5th inning. I decided to watch broxton close it out and I was extremely entertained. It was awesome to listen to john miller combine his yankee love with his dodger dislike in the calls he made in those innings.

Something like, if this was the Dodgers/Giants and the Giants fans were cheering, the Dodgers fans would boo to drown out their noise. But they weren’t doing that with the Yankees fans, they were just listening, stunned.

They could be Giants...but not really.

He used the word respect. As in the Dodger fans respect what the Yankees have done here tonight.

Fucking gag. The dodger fans aren’t in respect of nothing. They’re stunned that their team blew such a commanding lead. It isn’t the Yankee mystique. Far from it.

Ok, I just had to turn off KNBR after someone called in demanding that rowand hit lead off and play center because he’s the teams best option. He said torres should hit 8th because he’s a good fastball hitter and he’ll great great pitches to hit in front of the pitcher. He also went on to say rowand is the best hitter on the team. He was driving, sounds like a incoming DUI to me.

True this

And I think Schulman had actually picked the Giants in the pre-season to make it to the WS.

The broader headline for the Giants is how they do not have the look of a playoff team – in contrast to Boston.

They compete for nine innings. You have to give them that. And their rotation will keep them in the hunt.

But offensively, they do not have the speed to run or stay out of double plays. Aside from Juan Uribe and Aubrey Huff, they rarely slug. They leave far too many runners on base and score too many runs on outs instead of hits.

They could be Giants...but not really.

You'd have to find a dumber GM in baseball that sabean to get someone to take rowand

And I don’t think the astros are interested in the worst contract in baseball.

You only need Duane. The others are bonus. RT @robneyer between Miller, Krukow, and Kuiper, is there a team with a better announcing corps?

Awesome. Duane wouldn’t be as funny without a partner, though.

I like him

with Flemming. Kuiper always has to play straight man with Krukow, and (jprony banhammer imminent) I don’t think Kruk is as funny as Kuip or Miller. Plus too much baseball jargon by half with Kruk.

I don’t feel totally comfortable critiquing the best announcing combo in baseball, but I definitely agree that Kuiper has more personality and humor—-you really see it on the days that Kuip is off and Kruk has a different partner.
