I understand from Baggs that Bengie Molina's salary is 4.5 million, plus a performance bonus that kicks in if he starts 90 games: 250,000, plus another 250,000 for each 5 games after that, maxing at 115 games, for a grand total of 6 million; plus 4 cases of Twinkies for every additional pound of weight over 240. * His offer from the Mets was supposedly 5.5 million guaranteed, with 12 all-you-can-eat coupons for Nathan's Original Famous Frankfurters.
Molina has appeared in 58 of the Giants' 73 games. I don't know if there is a place to find starts as opposed to pinchhitting or defensive replacement. I'm guessing 56 were starts. There are 89 games remaining. If MadBum stays, and uses Posey for his personal catcher, then Buster and Eli both start 1/5. Therefore, Bengie starts 60% of these 89 remaining, that is 53 games, for a total of about 109!!!!!. Of course that would cause a great gnashing of teeth from Bengie, but it would give him the same amount offered by the Mets. The Giants could save 500,000, and use it to throw a big party for McCoven!!! They love us, you know.
*Okay, the part about the Twinkies has never been publicly announced. It may or may not be correct.
