Post-game thread: Cain implodes, Giants drop series to the Astros

South Africans who watched the game thought, "Man, a train whistle? That is unbelievably annoying."

This is how it's going to be. The Giants score just enough to win. Everything's alright. The Giants score just enough to lose. The sky is falling. The Giants score just enough to win. Everything's alright. The Giants score just enough to lose. The sky is falling. The Giants score just enough to win. Everything's alright. The Giants score just enough to lose. The sky is falling. The...

Wait, Cain gave up six earned against one of the worst offenses of our generation? He deserved to lose?

Well, I don't have a canned response for that.

It was notable, though, that Wandy Rodriguez threw to a rookie catcher today. Rodriguez, came into the game with an ERA of 2.13, and he left with an ERA of 5.64. I didn't "research" that claim, but you know it has to be true. Jason Castro called for screen passes and knuckleballs, which totally befuddled the veteran Rodriguez. The Giants stole 15 bases today, and they would have stolen more if it weren't for the eight passed balls.

I mean, I didn't really watch the game, so I'm just guessing at how Castro did. Man, I'm glad that wasn't us. It seemed awful.

But . . .

. . . their park probably has a lot to do with that. The first professional advice of consequence I gave anyone was the Giants, whom I tried desperately to get to sign John Tudor, on the ground that his ERA with the Red Sox was seriously warped compared to his record in other parks (this was more than a quarter-century ago, when “park factor” wasn’t even a recognized term). Of course, they didn’t, and the rest is history.

If a great pitcher like Cain struggled so much against a poor offense, it must mean the guy behind the plate can’t handle the pitching staff or call a good game. That’s the only reasonable conclusion one can draw in a situation like this.

by Seasick fish on Jun 24, 2010 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

Nope.

When a pitcher does well it’s because the catcher called a good game. When a pitcher does poorly, it’s because the pitcher didn’t execute. And if a rookie is behind the dish, then it’s his mother’s fault for birthing him.

This shit is a fucking joke

Even after matt cain had nothing, bork continued to stick with him because “his pitch count is fine mmm”. Once matt cain’s funeral was over, bengie molina remained in the game, why?

Why was bengie molina left in the game? What does he offer to this team that whiteside and posey don’t? Does our manager actually think he’s a great player and a good hitter and needed for the giants to achieve a come back win?

I have no idea why bengie was still in that game, let alone starting HIS FOURTH DAY GAME AFTER A NIGHT GAME IN A ROW!

I am sick of this bullshit, the media drones around here need to start calling for bengies head and insulting bochys managing and favoring bengie and keeping him in no matter how retarded the situation is.

Fuck brian sabean, fuck bruce bochy, fuck whiny ass douche bag bengie molina, and FUCK THIS PATHETIC EXCUSE MAKING OWNERS GROUP.

Also,

To bad we don’t have a top prospect we could have put behind the plat eto get some good reps in the squat, otherwise we could have replaced bengie in a game thats out of hand. Good thing that’s not the case though, I’d hate to have to take bengie out of the line up for two bench players that are astoundly better than him.

Yeah, no question.

His experience helped him stay calm, and this led to him leading the team from a blowout to a close game. A couple of breaks either way and the Giants coulda had this one. Couldn’t say that with a rookie back there.

A team gets all its confidence, energy and talent from the catcher.

If the players don’t have faith in him, they don’t have faith in themselves or each other. If the catcher doesn’t have faith in his own abilities, then the players won’t have faith in him. If the manager doesn’t have faith in the catcher, then the catcher knows that he doesn’t have any ability.

It's the worst type of giants game

Very similiar to the hellemeyer LA meltdown where the giants went down 7-0 crazy early. The giants had tons of chances all night, should have won th egame, and continued to get fucked over by bengie molina being embraced as a star player.

I had training from 11 to 1, and was looking forward to lunch at my desk and an hour of Giants baseball. Well, at least lunch was good.

Kind of interesting about Cain – he now lays claim to both the highest (94) and lowest (12) game score of any Giants starter in 2010.

Bob costas is such a biased douche bag

I’m watching the tigers mets game on MLB network and costas sounds like he’s broadcasting for the mets. He goes on a rant saying the park takes away tons of home runs from the mets and its extremely unfair. The tigers have hit a couple of home runs and everytime they’ve done it he’s like “they got really lucky and hit it to the place where it carries better than any park in baseball”.

Sorry bob costas, but step off you’re stool and stick to documentaries because you’re great at those.

I dunno about September, could even be longer than that… all i’m saying is that, the draft doesnt matter to me as much as this team needing a clear plan for the future, what they want to do, because right now nothing is happening, while you look at other teams trading their talent to receive talent. Gosh I just came on to comment on that segment

I’ve been listening to KNBR the last few days in the car and oh god it’s so terrible when they talk baseball

That quote was part of an extended segment about WHAT’S WRONG WITH TIM LINCECUM WHY DOES HE SUCK NOW

They were so fucking stupid about everything. OMG HE USED TO THROW ALL FASTBALLS LAST YEAR AND NOW HE THROWS THE CHANGEUP! HE THREW 98 MPH LAST YEAR!!! Have they ever actually watched a Lincecum start before?

And they kept pointing out that all of his numbers are really damn good, but then they kept coming back to, “So should we just get used to this less-good Lincecum? is this just something that happens? Should we be worried?” And it was so aggravating, because they would acknowledge that he’s actally still really awesome and then go on and on about how he’s struggling or something good lord I could not stand it.

How do people who listen to this crap regularly do it??

Since I (conveniently) missed the big scoring innings by the other teams in the last two disasters of a baseball contest, can anyone speak as to whether our water buffalo outfield defense contributed to the rallies? For instance, I saw one double in today’s game that I suspected would have died in the webbing of a Torres-Rowand-Schierholtz outfield. Was that the case for any others, or was it just hard hit balls and bad luck?

I'm as tall as Mel - why can't I hit 500 home runs?

by Ott on Jun 24, 2010 7:04 PM PDT reply actions

One of the runs scored was due to Burrell not getting a good read on a ball, but it probably didn’t matter in the end.

You and i are alike right there, i felt the same way, he would always express that same anger or just told it like it was. Same went with niner games, or warriors games. Anyway you put it, he was always negative BECAUSE EVERYTHING WAS WRONG WITH BAY AREA SPORTS. i still listen to him from 12-4, with listening to FItz and Brooks

From the Cal PR archives

And an interview with “Rocky” Rockwell, first Cal student to wear the bear outfit in 1941:

“Rockwell consulted then-Daily Cal art editor Warrington Colescott. Together, they designed Oski’s mask, and it was Colescott who dissuaded Rockwell from naming his character “Algy.” He suggested “Oski” because “Oski Wow Wow” was part of a school yell, and “Oski” was in a song, too.

“So, Oski it was.”

Could have been worse. Could have been “Warrington.”

The only autograph I'll ever own was Tony Taylor's.

(WHO?)

Journeyman infielder. With Los Tigres in ’71, 2, 3.

I have no recollection why or how but my grandmother who lived in NYC BROUGHT me his autographed 8 × 10 in ‘71. I was 12, and a Gi/A’s fan. I had no idea who the hell Tony Taylor was, but I do know my grandmother drove a 1969 Nova V8, big block 350 with a foot on both the gas and the brake.
Her feet never rested and neither did I.

In LA

For the longest time, only way to get a Yankees-Dodgers ticket is to buy a ticket package. I guess they were trying to limit Yankees fans in LA.

but that has not been my personal experience with Armenians and attractiveness.

Also, what else does Kim Kardashian do besides date professional African-American athletes? I was speaking more in terms of how she’s not known for doing anything.

And now I have an idea.

From Celebri – fi, where I honestly wasn’t sure I’d be able to find my way back to the sunlight…

“Kim Kardashian has no real claim to fame. You’ve probably heard of her, but probably don’t know why you’ve heard of her. She has a reality show, but again, you probably don’t know why. She was paid $75,000 to show up at a New Year’s party in Miami last year – and again, you probably don’t know why. You know what? We don’t either. She has a very impressive derriere, and we think it may have something to do with that, but really it’s anyone’s guess.”

It should be.

With his current 6% walks rate, he is a barely passable batter for an outfielder. His maximum upside was never beyond “decent but unexceptional”, and right now he isn’t even quite that. But apparently the jays do not value plate patience.

That's why we don't cherry pick

His park-adjusted wOBA is still slightly above-average. That’s fine for the Blue Jays right now (unless they’re going to make a push for the playoffs).

I’m gonna make a guess here and say that there is probably a relatively small number of players that fit in a desirable category above what Lewis produces, it’s just the nature of the game—hitting is difficult. The biggest issue with Lewis for the Giants is his fielding deficiency.
