I’m no soccer fan, and only marginally into American football, but it does kinda bug the way we’ve taken a “damn-the-metric-system!” approach to calling a game for what it is. John Cleese did a great bit last week where he reams that stuff.
“Soccer” is called football everywhere else because the foot is used to kick the ball around. In American football only one person is brought in on special occasions to actually kick the ball, etc.

are completely different than soccer plays imo, in that each one is a discrete event. It’d be more apt to compare them with basketball or hockey plays, where the action is much more fluid.
