POLL: What are the Giants' Team Needs?
Now that the 2010 trading season has started to materialize, I've been wondering what positions on the roster the Giants might look to upgrade. This season the Giants are in an interesting position. They are contending, and the message of the front office has clearly been one of "WIN NOW!," but the payroll is already larger than it has been the past couple of seasons, throwing into doubt if the Giants would take on salary. Additionally, while the Giants aren't good offensively, they seem to have depth with players that could step in and the team probably wouldn't change a bunch.
Without any more beating around the bush, here are the main options for the trading deadline:
Set up man:
The central strength of the bullpen last season was the set up corp and Brian Wilson. Between Brandon Medders, Sergio Romo and Jeremy Affeldt, the bullpen was very good leading up to Brian Wilson. Affeldt has been hurt for a large portion of the season and has simply not looked like a reliable reliever. The Set up roles have shifted from Affeldt and Romo to Casilla and Mota. While Mota and Casilla could maintain their great performances, an upgrade could be a better option.
5th starter:
Todd Wellemeyer has been much maligned by Giants fans until he was injured and gave way to Joe Martinez. Martinez, while a fan favorite, is likely a 4.50 ERA pitcher at best this season. All indications are that starting pitching will be plentiful on the market, so if no target for an offensive upgrade materializes, upgrading the 5th starter spot could make the Giants rotation dominant 1-5 and keep them in nearly every game.
First Baseman/ Corner Outfielder:
With the versatility on the roster, the Giants could move Buster Posey behind the plate and trade for a bat at either corner OF spot or First Base, sliding Aubrey Huff around as needed. As mentioned frequently, Bengie Molina has been atrocious both offensively and defensively and acquiring a league average player to replace Molina with could be a big boost.
So, McCoven, What should the Giants target in the trade market?

I say a power bat
Doesn’t matter if it’s corner OF or at first base. My main target would be Prince Fielder (no, not for Cain). He’s on a losing team and only has a year and half left on his contract. An added benefit is pushing Molina out of the lineup
Torres CF
Sanchez 2B
Huff RF
Fielder 1B
Uribe SS
Sandoval 3B
Posey C
Burrell LF
That’s purrrrrdy. But we could target any available bat on a losing team, shifting Huff to first and leaving someone in the OF.
Obviously, bullpen help is nice, but that’s not the sort of thing that will put us over the top in a tough division.

You’d probably have to give up at least Bowker, Bumgarner and Runzler. The price isn’t worth it, IMO

That might be too much
And Sabean has said MadBum is untouchable.
I’d of course be willing to give up Bowker, as he has unfortunately been squeezed out. Probably Runzler too if it came to that. If you had to throw in Neal, well, gotta do it.
Fielder is good.

“of course” Bowker? “gotta do” Neal? These guys both have very significant upside that is largely unexplored.

Agreed.
Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.
Though there are other options
I wouldn’t mind us going after Berkman, who could probably be gotten for less.

LOL
@ Sabean making an honest run at getting a legit power bat to SF.
But if we are going to toss around ideas for power bats, I will suggest getting one who can play a decent RF, and move Huff back to 1B and Posey C and take anything for Bengie. While on the offensive side of things your lineup looks good, it still has Huff and Burrell in the OF corners.

Eh, yeah
But with Torres in CF I don’t worry about that quite as much
I’d be OK with an OF bat though. I think we need a legit hitter.

I voted to unload Molina and Rowand
But Rowand would actually be a semi-useful piece to have off the bench. There’s no market for him anyway, so he can just take the spot he had earmarked for Burrell as the 4th OF. It looks like this move has already been made, in effect, so the point is moot. Bengie is a much different story. When I look at the current makeup of the team and then think about how they can realistically improve, getting rid of Bengie stands out as far and away the best option. Here is what you get:
1) You improve the offensive production at C
2) You improve the defense at C
3) Assuming you move Huff back to 1B, you then improve both offense at 1B and defense in the OF (Huff has been OK, but I am legititmately worried about having Burrell and Huff as regular starters
4) By moving Huff from LF (or RF as it may be), you improve the odds of finding a decent replacement by trade. Not only are there more corner OF to choose from, where would you put a new player in the current lineup? I.e., whom do they replace? Posey?
The caveat here is that removing Bengie and moving Buster to C and Huff to 1B should not be an excuse to play Rowand more. I am OK with leaving the OF as is and moving Panda to 1B, Uribe to 3B, and having Edgar get the bulk of starts at SS as long as that works, but I am worried about Edgar’s durability and I really worry abou the OF defense.
Adopted Nut: Paraparaumu, New Zealand native, Andy Skeels
Short term I like a lot of what your saying here. My bigger concern ( differnce) is I think Urbie, Renteria & Sanchez are too fragile to seeing much time outside of the M.I. without probably have to bring in M.I. help and I really rather they not try to trade to bring outside help for M.I. There is just too many ways for that to go badly.

My 0.02
I voted for a setup guy. Getting the 8th inning fixed is the easiest (and cheapest) way to improve this team, although I realize that that’s patching up one leak and ignoring a few bigger ones.
I’d like to see Bumgarner get a shot at the rotation before we shop for another SP.
They could be Giants...but not really.
+1
And getting set-up guys like that, starting next month, can very often be done on the cheap, with no B-level, or above, prospects changing hands.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
This.
Getting a frontline starter or a masher is going to cost serious prospects, and I don’t think we’re in the hunt enough that it makes sense to mortgage the future. A legitimate setup guy would allow the Giants to solidify the bullpen and define each reliever’s role much more concretely without giving up players we see as big pieces of the picture two or three years down the line.
Proud parent of the new dominant pitching sensation out of San Diego State University.

Agreed.
I voted set-up man, and this was my reasoning as well. We can get one without giving up a premium talent for it.
To be honest, if I thought we had enough pieces in the minor league system to trade for a legit power bat AND not ransack the farm at the same time, I would be all for it. But I don’t really think our system is so deep right now. Someone above suggested that it would take Bumgarner, Bowker, and Runzler to get Fielder; I disagree, I think it would take more, and that’s why I don’t really think getting that ‘big bat’ is our best bet.
FWIW, Sabes sez...
Giants avoid a sweep, ponder future moves
Sabean said his staff is further along identifying the teams that are likely to be sellers at the deadline.
“We still have to get all our team reports in by the All-Star break,” Sabean said. "Once that happens, you can really fine-tune who you’re going to scout.
“We’re developing a list of guys in our minor leagues that we’ll trade and guys we won’t. We’ll have two lists. That is still in its formative stages.”
One notable name on the “hands-off” list is top pitching prospect Madison Bumgarner, who remains the rotation’s first line of defense at Triple-A Fresno.
“How can we?” Sabean said. “We might need him to pitch next week.”
They could be Giants...but not really.

I'd have to believe Posey's on the hands-off list as well
They simply don’t have any long-term catcher solution without him. I know people worry that he’s not going to catch much, but the more I think about it, the more I believe that Molina is gone at the trade deadline. Sabes has been posturing to try to pump up Molina’s value, and it has backfired, for the most part.

At least we can cut Bengie and Edgar loose at the end of the year. Scott, OTOH…/sigh…can we even get a decent prospect for him?
They could be Giants...but not really.
Maybe other teams will give us their good players if we agree to only play our bad players against them.
Proud parent of the new dominant pitching sensation out of San Diego State University.

One at a time
set-up man: The Giants could use another solid reliever, true. However, the problem with relievers in general is that they are either undependable or incredibly overpriced. I doubt they are going to pick up anyone who is really a good bet to be better than Romo/Affeldt/Runzler GOING FORWARD. The possible exception might be to pick up the expiring contract on a mediocre closer for a bad team. Some guy they could get for essentially free. But general, pass
first base/corner OF: What they really need to do is keep Molina and Rowand out of the everyday lineup. It seems unlikely that they are going to find a guy better than Huff / Burrell, or even Schierholtz.
starting pitcher: I guess we could pull another “Brad Penny” but I don’t think 5th starter is really that important a roster spot. I think the Giants 5th starters only seem bad because their 1-4 are so good and their offense is so bad.
I have to assume that we are not going to get a player in the Hanley Ramierez class – and if we did we are not going to want to pay the price. About the only interesting (but totally insane) move I could see would be swapping Posey or Sandoval for like a Jason Heyward- sacrificing some positional flexibility for out right hitting. I don’t think you could get a H. Ramierez… and I think a move for a seriously stud veteran would be disastrous for mid- long- term payroll

Bullpen help
The bullpen is way too inconsistent to be successful in postseason play. There are many good arms on bad teams who I bet the giants could snatch up for relatively cheap.
There aren’t any power bats that really interest me. Fielder would be nice, but he won’t come cheap and there are enough overweight guys on this team already. I thought that A-Gon would be a good pick up, but the Pads obviously aren’t going to dump him now.
I’d rather see the giants pick up some peripheral pieces midseason than fuck with their lineup that, while wildly inconsistent, has been successful.
As much as I would like it to happen, nobody is going to take Aaron Rowand from us. That’s our own damn burden, and will be until his contract ends.

He's basically Fred Sanchez in the OF.
If it means Huff goes back to 1B and Molina gets the axe, I am all for it. But if it means he plays about as much as Garko did, or Posey is displaced from the lineup, it’s a waste of whatever they trade off for him.

Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.
I say buy low on an AL washed up vet, targeting a LF or 1B. It is really more of a depth move for this year and seeing if you can find another diamond in the rough.
- It seems to have worked with Uribe, Huff and Burrell
- You don’t sacrifice any of our organizational talent moving forward
- You aren’t tying up any more money moving forward
Save the money for the offseason and go hard after Crawford or Werth. I really don’t think Sabean has the savvy to get a great hitter without depleting our young talent. Besides, most sluggers being talked about have only one or two years left on their contract, meaning that overpaying our young talent for them is an even worse idea.
See if you can limp into the playoffs this year, be patient and go hard for the WS next year.
We just traded who for who?!
I don’t really want Werth; he’s 32 and probably looking for a four or five year deal, and I seriously doubt he’s going to be worth the $13M he’ll be pulling down when he’s 35-37. If you could get him on a two year deal then absolutely, but he’ll get a better offer than that. Plus it’s not like he was good before he got to Philly, and I’m not sure he’d hit all that well away from Citizen’s Bank.
Goodbye, Steven Johnson, we hardly knew ye. Seriously, that was short.
One ticket please.
Werth will make a some other team very happy for a year or so ( after this season) but damned if this does not smell like Rowand before his Giants contract.
