Here is what . . .

. . . I take away from this game.

1. Cain was—pitch count or no, “horse” or no—perceptibly tiring in the 7th. Bochy’s old-school thought (or whatever) patterns are “He’s pitching well so why take him out? Dude deserves a chance to go for the W.” A phrase that gets repeated a lot around this household is one from a medical treatise on fatigue: loss of fine motor control is the first symptom. “Fine motor control” means the ability to do delicate tasks with the muscles—such as exactly control pitches. Cain should not have started the 8th, but certainly should have been out after the walk to Lewis. Bochy probably have cost Cain an L, and certainly cost him two or three Earnies.

2. Santiago Casilla has been an optical illusion. Three batters faced with 2 outs already and no third out is, for him, a good performance: be glad he didn’t give up three straight boombahs. He was not a good pitcher, he is not a good pitcher, and he never will be a good pitcher.

There’s lots more, but those are, to me, the high points—or, more correctly, the low points.

Professional baseball analyst since 1980.

by owlcroft on Jun 19, 2010 4:24 PM PDT reply actions

Cain should NOT have been pulled after getting two easy outs followed by the Lewis walk. I’m no Bochy fan, but he would have needed a crystal ball there to see that .190 hitter going deep. Either you have one, or you’re using the gift of hindsight.
As for Casilla, you are probably right about him, but in this game he was beaten by a little broken bat bloop. You surely cannot fault him for that. In addition, they’re down two runs in the eighth. Who did you want there, Brian Wilson?

Buster Posey: "I'm a catcher." Brian Sabean: "I'm an idiot."

by rxmeister on Jun 19, 2010 4:33 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

No seers needed.

The .190 is meaningless, as others have already noted; and the Jays are a team on which everyone can, and always tries to, go deep. Nor is it hindsight: I said aloud at the start of the 8th that Cain should not be out there, and I repeated it even louder when Lewis walked. You weren’t here to hear me, but trust me, it was said. Let me repeat: loss of fine motor control is the first symptom of fatigue onset.

Who do I want there? No, not Wilson, because at that point the game could have gone on to 19 innings. (Which is why switching in Schierholtz was, to say the least, bizarre, unless Burrell had a naggy something we didn’t hear about.) Neither Bautista nor Casilla ought to be on the big-club roster, and their presence artificially reduces the realistic options. I’d have to look back and see who was used when, but definitely not Casilla (or Bautista)—probably whoever else was available. When did Martinez pitch? (I have a terrible memory.)

The only other RHP options were Romo and Mota

Casilla is on the staff only because Medders went on the DL. Mota had fatigue problems all last week (he’s not at an age where 9 appearances in 16 days is a fair workload). Bautista is on the staff because Joaquin was ineffective to say the least in April.

Even though it is much easier for a pitcher to improve significantly late in his career, because pitching is an initiating act, not a responding act. But there is zero reason to believe that Casilla after quite a number of consecutive years of unremitting badness suddenly found The Secret Of life®. Even if you DID say Cain should be pulled, it doesn’t mean it’s the right move, even with what happened. Two outs man on first are situations even tired pitchers can get out of, and Cain would probably not agree with your assessment. Not only that, but you didn’t care for what reliever he had warming up anyway, so what’s the point of changing pitchers?

Buster Posey: "I'm a catcher." Brian Sabean: "I'm an idiot."

by rxmeister on Jun 19, 2010 4:58 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

You are conflating issues.

Whether Cain should have been pulled and who should replace him are separate matters. Certainly what Cain, or any pitcher being removed from a game, thinks is about as irrelevant to decision-making as it gets. I have never heard of a manager whose strategy for changing pitchers was to wait till the pitcher signals him that it’s time to take him out (pardon the assorted indefinite antecedents there); most managers rely on the opposition batters, and personal observation, for that information.

As for Casilla, that’s just compounding the folly: wait too long, then throw gas on the fire. Affeldt was usable (now that I recall), and has throughout his career been almost exactly equal in effectiveness against RHB and LHB (.741 OPS for LHB, .746 for RHB), so where’s the problem?

Professional baseball analyst since 1980.

by owlcroft on Jun 19, 2010 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions

The point I’m making is simply this. Sometimes the right move turns out wrong, or the wrong move works out well. Just because you wanted Cain pulled right before the homerun doesn’t mean you were right. The pitcher you wanted to bring in there could’ve easily given it up as well. A tired Matt Cain this season is better than a rested Joey or Affeldt.

Buster Posey: "I'm a catcher." Brian Sabean: "I'm an idiot."

Oh.

A tired Matt Cain this season is better than a rested Joey or Affeldt. Gee, I didn’t know that. I thought a tired Matt Cain might—like any tired pitcher—you know, sort of, um, walk men? Maybe let pitches creep out into the zone? Silly me. Matt Cain, even when tired, doesn’t do that. Boy, live and learn.

Yes, sometimes the right move turns out wrong, and the wrong move turns out right. But the smart money is usually on making the right move. Bochy made the wrong move. As usual.

I APPROVE OF RXMEISTER'S CONFLATION

The decision on whether or not to take out a pitcher isn’t made in a vacuum. The actual decision on whether or not to remove a pitcher absolutely is influenced by who a manager has to choose from in his bullpen. If Bochy had something akin to the Padres’ bullpen to go to in the situation he faced today, that would’ve been a far different thing than if he had Arizona’s bullpen to go to—or the Giants’, for that matter.

Today, Bochy had a rested bullpen, so in theory, he could’ve chosen just about any of his relief pitchers. I also happen to agree with your point that Bochy errs on the side of managing for stats (letting a starter stay in for a W, or bringing in Wilson just so he can get a save). And I also agree that Cain was most likely tiring. He had been leaving many of his pitches up that inning, even as he retired Buck and Encarnacion. The walk to LOLFred was of the 4-pitch variety. So, actually, I agree in principle with the idea of taking Cain out after the Lewis walk.

But the question was asked, who would you have had replace Cain? Your main point here was “anyone but Casilla or Bautista”, because, evidently, you think Casilla and Bautista are the worst pitchers on the Giants roster and that they don’t belong in the major leagues. You also sort of suggested Martinez, which I thought was a little odd, given that Joey just started on Wednesday. Eventually, you said Affeldt would’ve been a better choice, which I find really puzzling, the way Affeldt has pitched of late.

The problem with just saying “Cain had to go”, without conflating the issue of who would’ve replaced him, is the fact that each of the available choices to replace Cain (save for Wilson) came with significant risks of their own. Casilla and Bautista we’ve already covered. The others were:

  • Affeldt: 1.80 WHIP; walks and command have been a significant problem all season.
  • Mota: Probably the best choice here, but he has been going through some significant regression of late.
  • Romo: Best WHIP on the staff, but brings serious Gopher-tude. I’m not sure if Romo vs. Hill wouldn’t have ended up with the same result as Cain vs. Hill did.
  • Runzler: Really has struggled against RH hitters this season. 1.74 WHIP, 6.28 ERA vs. RH hitters.

Those were the choices, unless you want to consider bringing Wilson in there. None of the non-Wilson relievers inspire that much confidence the way, say, a Luke Gregerson, a Mike Adams, or even a Justin Mujica might in that situation.

So, again, I think I might’ve opted for Mota. But the point here is, Bochy doesn’t have the luxury of simply saying, “Cain’s fine motor control is gone—get him out of there. I don’t care who you bring in, just get Cain out of there!!” He has to make a determination on who would be more likely to get an out than Cain. If he looks down at his bullpen and sees a bunch of guys who also are lacking fine motor control, and who present equal or greater risk of failure than leaving in Cain would present, then maybe the decision isn’t as easy as you seem to think it is.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?

by tobias on Jun 19, 2010 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Question: how do you have an ERA vs. RH hitters? Is this from outings in which he only saw RH hitters?

by speckops on Jun 20, 2010 12:48 AM PDT up reply actions

No, I understand that, but I’ve never seen an ERA vs. handedness, probably for the reason of what do you do if you face a lefty and then a righty?

Say the lefty comes up first and singles and then the right hander drives him in with a double but fails to score in the inning. Does that count as an earned runner for right handers or left handers?

Good point...

I was going off Runzler’s splits from MLB. Somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind I had the same question you did, but that question never made it to the conscious part of my brain. I don’t know how MLB gets that particular stat. Using tOPS+ here probably makes more sense. LHBs’ tOPS+ vs. Runzler is 49. RHBs have a 138 tOPS+ against Runzler.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?

by tobias on Jun 20, 2010 3:14 AM PDT up reply actions

There are numerous questionable assumptions there.

One is that a pitcher of a certain reasonably established quality level is not to be judged by that established level, but by what he did in his last outing or two, aka the “hot hand” theory, aka Bochy management style. If Jeremey Affeldt is good enough to be on your roster in the bullpen, and is rested, then you bring him in when he is an otherwise reasonable candidate. If you think Affeldt and Mota and Romo and Runzler are inadequate for that situation, then (excepting perhpas Runzler, whose splits are still SSS) they ought not to be on your staff. If they are on your staff, you have perforce decided that they can pitch when it is appropriate (not recently overtaxed, and no huge, established platoon differential). Affeldt matches those criteria.

I think the decision is comically easy.

I disagree about Torres’s 2009, but never mind that—Casilla hasn’t been unremittingly bad at all. He was very good in AAA in 2005-06, and had a solid rookie year with the A’s in 2007. Then he fell apart.

But as you said, it’s so much easier for a pitcher, especially a relief pitcher, to work things out at an advanced age. Casilla obviously has outstanding stuff, and his results, in his few innings this year, have been superb. Sure, there’s a good chance he’ll relapse; but he’s the perfect sort of pitcher to have as the fifth or sixth man out of the pen, because sometimes you get lucky and he turns into Joe Nathan or something.

Who?

Rookie year in 2007? Casilla came up with Oakland in 2004. His ERA history is this:

Year Org IP ERA
2004 oak 5.2 12.71
2005 oak 3.0 3.00
2006 oak 2.1 11.57
2007 oak 50.2 4.44
2008 oak 50.1 3.93
2009 oak 48.1 5.96
2010 sfo 10.1 0.87

2007 and 2008 look fine.

Really, the aberration here is his bad 2009 season. Those look like the stats of a serviceable major league reliever.

Shirley, you jest?

A career 4.85 (which includes his 2010 to date) is a “serviceable major league reliever”? On whose team? And 4.44 is a “solid” year? You and I are reading from very different scripts.

(And that oddball 2008 of “only” 3.93 is because his ERA was way under his actual pitching quality.)

And 4.44 is a "solid" year? You and I are reading from very different scripts.

Apparently we are, considering I never said “solid.” A 4.44 ERA isn’t great or anything, but if you can put that up in the majors, you can stay in the majors, especially with the kind of live arm that Casilla has that could be dominant.

"Far" . . .

. . . is a relative word. In this instance, it is, so far as I am concerned, immediately adjacent. Of all his career stats, the only one not worse than average is his K/PA rate, which is slightly better (but his K/W is also below normal). Thank you, but you may have him, I don’t want him.

I’m willing to be that falls pretty close into Fangraphs’ regime of “at/below replacement level.”

by speckops on Jun 20, 2010 12:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Probably, but how many teams currently have 7 above replacement pitchers in the pen? Not many, I would think.

And the point is that he could improve. He ditched his old slider and replaced it with a curvball. He’s also currently averaging two more MPH on his fastball than before. If this leads to him shaving, say, .30 points of ERA, he’s a 4.20 pitcher, which is decent.

It’s not that he’s been OK, just that he’s been close enough to OK that it makes sense to take a flier on him.

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jun 20, 2010 2:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, if we assume (for the sake or argument) that the top 77% of relievers are above replacement level and these relievers are randomly distributed, then the chance of any 7 relievers all being above replacement level is (0.77)^7 = 0.16. And with thirty teams, we might expect (on average) that around 5 teams have entirely above average bullpens, so, as you said, not many.

That said, things probably aren’t distributed randomly, so who knows.

by speckops on Jun 20, 2010 8:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Shirley, you must be a slut!

In 2007 Jairo Garcia did not arrive in the Bigs until June 3. 13 appearances later his ERA was 0.57 and he had 2 Wins. He made 11 appearances in July and allowed runs in only 3 of those games blowing 2 saves. He did not pitch well in August allowing runs in 7 of 13 appearances, yet had 0 BS, 5 Holds and 1 Win. In September he did not allow a run in 7 of his 9 appearances but only one of those was a Blown Save.

That’s a pretty good year for a guy who is basically around to pitch garbage innings and the occasional extra-innning.

True.

But “putting it together” usually requires some impetus—a good pitching coach, the fear of being DFAed, something. No one has ever doubted that he has the basic tools—whyever do we suppose the A’s hung on to him for so many years despite his performance? But an old saying of mine (in print since 1982) is that the problem with great young arms is that so many of them come attached to shitty young pitchers. And that is also true for not-so-young arms.

Yeah, I’m pretty much pretending that never happened. My reply was completely ignored, and I see 2-3 similar (sometimes worse) “name callings” every day, that, at worst, have jponry or howtheyscored (or some non-mods) politely asking the poster to calm down, and most of the times not even that.

Which part of my comment do you take issue with?

Mali: Third world country, in fact one of the poorest in the entire world, by definition a “Third World Nation”.

Koman Coulibaly: Referee in question. He’s either brutally incompetent or he deliberately screwed the US team over.

If you ascribe to the former, then the whole of FIFA competition comes into question, for by employing incompetent referees they compromise the integrity of the game.

If you ascribe to the latter possibility, as I do, then Coulibaly is nothing more than a lying scumbag piece of shit, from a third world nation.

So, am I an asshole for pointing out the obvious, or ar YOU the asshole for your pathetic knee-jerk reaction to an accurate post?

Don't go flogging Mali

I agree with “It was a first-class jobbing”, and I’m guessing I would agree with what I think is probably your level of disgust with what happened.

But I don’t agree with making a point of which of the three worlds (there’s only three, right?) the ref is from, or what type of people you think inhabit that particular country in that particular world. I think there are plenty of “third-world” refs who would’ve made the right (non-)call in that situation, and plenty of first and second-world refs who might well have made the same disgraceful call Coulibaly did. After all, lying thieves exist in every country, including ours.

Mainly, I disagree with somehow tying the egregiousness of what Coulibaly did, with where he is from.

Ask Jeffrey Leonard. Supposedly Leonard’s nephews were running around the clubhouse, and Clark used the “N word” when he referred to them. Leonard and Clark had a confrontation, and it’s believed the Giants subsequently traded Leonard to solve the problem.

Buster Posey: "I'm a catcher." Brian Sabean: "I'm an idiot."

by rxmeister on Jun 19, 2010 7:58 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

To be fair, they might also have traded him because he was in steep decline – his last really good season was 1984, though he was solid in 1987 – and, with Butler, Maldonado, and Aldrete (who was coming off a career year), they didn’t really need Leonard.

I actually went to a game at the ’Stick a day or two after Leonard was traded. It was a giveaway day – a free baseball with (fake) signatures of all the Giants players. A bleacher bum asked me if it had Leonard on it. It did.

“Give it back to ’em and ask for a new one without that bum!” he said.

That ended up being a pretty nice trade for the Giants, incidentally. Leonard was pretty much done, and Riles, though not a spectacular player, had a good year and a half for the Giants.

Not that my opinions of people are always based on the US legal system. But in this case, when it involves a very strong accusation against someone of whom I’ve always had a pretty favorable opinion, I think I’m going to wait to see something more substantial than what I’m seeing here. Or I’ll ask Jeffrey next time I see him. Admittedly, it’d be different if we were talking about, say, Steve Garvey. And with Tommy Lasorda, heck, I endorse flat-out making stuff up.

What’s amazing is that the last THREE times they’ve had day games following night games, a time where teams who have good young catchers tend to rest them, Bengie has caught on every one of those occasions. Either they’re giving him one last chance to save his Giants’ career, or more likely, (and far more scary) they don’t think they can win without him in the lineup.

Very good point

Unfortunately, I think its the latter. I seriously think that bork and smugbean think bengie molina is one of the best catchers in the game and they “need him to get hot” or they can’t win without him. Bengie molina insists he’s fine and wants to go out and play everyday, he’s done and should give it up and realize he’s hurting the team and one of our greatest prospects of all times development. Unfortunately bengie does not care about the team, his only concern is getting enough starts to get very incentive in his contract because he is clearly the least effective catcher in the league and is now a liability and will be done after ths year.

There’s no reason to have him shortening the line up 4 out of every 5 games and playing every single fucking night game followed by a day game. I don’t understand why the fuck bork thinks molina needs to catch the 5th starter, let alone zito.

Here are the details:

(From a February 19 column by Baggarly.)

He’d earn a $250,000 bonus for his 90th start at catcher, and additional $250,000 payouts for each five games he starts beyond that, maxing out at 115 games. That’s six triggers worth $1.5 million – which could bring his total earnings to $6 million.

(It bears mention that his contract language is very specific: He doesn’t get credit for games caught. He has to start behind the plate. And starts at any other position, including DH, obviously wouldn’t count, either.)

Nope, you know bengie will demand to play non stop and insist he’s in great shape and feels like he’s taking great swings and wants to help the team win. You know that bork eats that up like bengie does a buffet by himself, Mmm veteran gamer calling the best games in the mLB and what a great bat he’s got Mmmm. Bork thinks bengie is just around the corner from a massive hot streak, but in truth bengie is just trying to get as many starta as possible so he can hit that 115 mark. Once he hits that and the 6 million is all guaranteed, he will tell everyone he’s “injured” and hit the DL for the rest of the season while he eats himself to death.

Matt cain truely is fucked

On a day when the king of no run support is cain’d brutally, zack grienke avoids being cained with a 2 out singles rally by the royals in the 7th.

Sympathy for Cain

I’m there with us being pissed at the team failing to support Cain but I sure hope that:
1) Cain would have screamed “Get the fuck off my mound” if Bochy tried to take him out before the home run, and
2) Cain would tell us, “Thanks, but I’m the one who walked Lewis and grooved a pitch to Hill. It’s on me.”

by NearestNorwich on Jun 19, 2010 6:28 PM PDT reply actions

2) Yes, those two runs are his fault. Definitely not his fault that he ended up with a loss for it though.

by speckops on Jun 19, 2010 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

They are . . .

. . . “his fault” only if you choose to believe that he, or any pitcher, can pitch any indefinitely large number of innings without getting at all fatigued.

Most of what a major-league manager does could be executed by a reasonably bright bat boy. What a manager chiefly gets paid to do is to know when to take pitchers out (and when not to). When a man who has been demonstrating near-perfect command starts to be less than perfect, and the game is tied or close, it’s time to make the move. Any fool can say after the fact that he must have been getting tired, but the manager who is actually earning his salary is the one who sees the issue before it blows up on him and the pitcher and the team.

Maybe some days Cain can go 130 pitches, maybe some days only 90. There is no tablet on which some one number is graven: it is up to the manager to see which kind of day the man is having.

Decreases in fine motor control are the first symptom of fatigue.

Fine motor control is the coordination of muscular, bone (skeletal), and neurological functions to produce small, precise movements.

I dunno, Mr. O...

…but is throwing a baseball – various grips/fingerpressures notwithstanding – really a small, precise movement?

I'd say . . .

. . . that the hand grip and control involved in the release of the ball fall into that category. Observing tired pitchers’ deliveries provides anecdotal confirmation: the usual mark of a tiring pitcher, which even radio and TV commentators will notice given enough opportunity, is that the man can no longer locate his pitches with the precision he had in earlier innings.

Honestly, re #2, doesn’t he always?

“A huge no-no,” Cain said. “That’s why a two-out walk will hurt you so much, because these guys will beat you with the long ball. You can’t give those guys extra chances.”
“You just get comfortable throwing in tight ballgames like today,” Cain said. “It comes down to one or two mistakes that decide the ballgame. You try not to be that guy. Today, I was that guy.”

Haha I thought the same thing

When I thought that, I instantly came to the conclusion “20 game winner without a doubt, even though it won’t happen”. There’s no way any giants player will score 100 runs, I’ll be shocked if we get more than one person above 80.

Seriously?

Sure is nice how we have a bunch of retards covering the giants who seem to think the offense is never to blame. The title should read “Offense takes the day off, cain tosses gem and loses”.

A few weeks ago Tom Tolbert (a former teammate in 1989) mentioned on the air that he heard Bol was really sick and near death. He was trying to confirm it. I guess his source was, unfortunately, right.

Jeeze

i mean, i know i didn’t really watch him play much, but it’s not really what he did in the NBA that made me feel really bad, it’s what he was doing for his native country of Sudan. My dad (a life long warriors fan) talked to me about Bol, even though he didn’t really play for them much. But regardless, the guy supported his country so much he’d LITERALLY do anything for them, i dont know who in their right mind could think he wasn’t a good guy

by PiKAgiant on Jun 19, 2010 11:38 PM PDT up reply actions

It wasn’t that. Tolbert knew the guy and liked him. He just mentioned in passing on the air about Bol, who had returned from Sudan.

That’s really something. I had no idea that he mentioned it, wow, and you know, i really had no idea what he really went through, what with traveling to Sudan to support his country, going every which way to make money, and also going through that car accident in that cab. it’s really sad

Fun Fact

The Giants have lost 12 games when allowing 3 runs or less, 2nd most in the majors behind the Cubs. 5 of these losses have been pitched by Matt Cain.

by sfgiants420 on Jun 20, 2010 1:11 AM PDT up reply actions

I am very seriously disturbed . . .

. . . by what I learned today about Molina’s contract (check upthread). His incentives for games started at catcher, which incentives could easily reach 1.5 million dollars, run up to 115 games started at C. Considering that Whiteside is inked in for 20% of all starts (JSanchez), to get Molina to his max incentives leaves exactly 15 appearances available (at most) for Posey in the entire season.

Does anyone here want to place a bet against Bochy trying his mightiest to give an aging, inadequate catcher his max incentive bonus however he can? All becomes shockingly and frighteningly clear.

by owlcroft on Jun 20, 2010 1:25 AM PDT reply actions

You don’t think it’s already frighteningly clear? We were discussing this earlier in the thread and we were all saying that he will get that no problem, and then some. What worrys me is I think that bork and sabean are convinced that they can’t win without molina and need him to “get hot”. It’s as if they don’t realize molina cripples the team and shortens the line up significantly. Not only that but his defense is terrible, people run on us as if johnny damon is behind the plate, and oh yeah LOL “WILD PITCH”.

There's a difference.

Bochean being stupid is one thing. We talk about it all the time here, and I incline strongly to the belief that it is so.

But playing Molina independent of any confused, fuzzy idea of his worth mainly or wholly so that he can be rewarded for, I don’t know, career gaminess (smelling gamy?) with incentive money is a whole other level of vileness. I am not saying that Bochy has consciously said to himself "I’ll play Bengie no matter how terrible he is, just so’s he can get the money I never did"; but I cannot escape the strong suspicion that subconsciously that is very much biasing his decision-making.

As for Sabean, who can say? I have quite enough trouble understanding the minds of intelligent, sane people.
