minor lines, 6/14/10
Highlights from the Giants' farm: while six Giant farmhands homered, Ehire Adrianza and Tyler LaTorre did so as part of multi-hit efforts; and David Mixon had 2 ER in 7.0 IP.
AAA: Fresno defeated Portland 6-3
Fresno: SS Edgar Renteria: 1 for 2, 2B, BB
Fresno: LF John Bowker: 1 for 3, HR, BB, SO
Fresno: SP Henry Sosa: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Fresno: RP Alex Hinshaw: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K
Bowker homered for the second straight day. He has 3 HRs in eight games since his demotion. Renteria reached base twice in his first rehab game.
In his second start, Sosa pitched just four innings, thorwing 54 pitches (34 strikes). After striking out two of the four batters he faced, Hinshaw now has peripheral stats of 19 B, 15 BB, and 24 K in 23.1 IP.
AA: Richmond defeated Reading 7-2
Richmond: CF Skyler Stromsmoe: 1 for 5, HR, SO
Richmond: C Tyler LaTorre: 2 for 4, HR
Richmond: P David Mixon: 1 for 3, HR, SO
Reading: RF Domonic Brown: 2 for 3, 2B, HBP
Richmond: SP David Mixon: 7.0+ IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K--1 HB
The Flying Squirrels got three HRs from a trio of unlikely candidates. Stromsmoe led off the game with his 2nd HR, matching his total from the last two years combined. Mixon led off the 3rd inning with his 1st pro HR. LaTorre added his 1st HR in the 9th inning. Brown, the Phillies' top prospect, had his 14th double while reaching base three times. He is hitting an impressive .313/.388/.562 through 201 AB this year.
Mixon allowed just 1 ER though 7.0 IP before allowing another run in the 8th inning. He struck out just one after having at least 4 K in each of his previous nine starts. With the 1 K and 8 H, his K/H ratio has slipped below 1.00.
A+: San Jose defeated High Desert 10-3
(after leading 10-1 through four innings)
San Jose: SS Ehire Adrianza: 2 for 4, HR, BB, SO
San Jose: 1B Brandon Belt: 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SO
San Jose: 3B Drew Biery: 2 for 3, BB, HBP
High Desert: DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 1 for 4, BB
San Jose: SP Oliver Odle: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--1 HR, 1 HB
Adrianza had a grand slam HR in the 2nd inning, his 1st HR this year. He had 2 HRs last year. Biery reached base four times. Belt had another solid game reaching base three times, including his 25th double. EME, whom the Giants released a couple weeks ago, played his third game in the Mariners' organization.
Odle made his fifth start among sixteen appearances. The control artist had two walks in a game for the first time this year. His ERA remains above 4.50.
A-: Augusta defeated Charleston 7-4
(after leading 7-1 through seven innings)
Augusta: CF Evan Crawford: 1 for 4, HR, BB, 3 SO, SB
Augusta: RF Ryan Lollis: 3 for 5, 3B, 2B
Augusta: SP Brian Irving: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 HB
Augusta: RP Ryan Verdugo: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K
Crawford led off the game with his 2nd HR this year. Lollis's three hits, including his 6th triple and 6th double, raised his AVG to .290.
Irving made his second start of the year among eighteen appearances. In both starts, he has allowed just one run while pitching at least five innings. His 5 K matched a season high. Verdugo struck out five of the eight batters he faced, the third time he has had 5 K in his last ten appearances. He now has 40 K in 24.2 IP.
DSL: Giants lost to Orioles2 4-2
Dominican: 2B Alberto Robles: 1 for 3, BB
Dominican: SP Luis Angeles: 6.0 IP, 0 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K--1 HB, 1 WP
Robles (19.9 y.o.) was the only Gigantes' hitter to reach base twice. In his third pro start, Angeles (20.6 y.o.) allowed four runs despite not yielding a hit.

That actually would be a pretty awesome rookie stat line for a guy with 2 months pro experience coming straight from A ball.

EME
Yes, I mentioned in my report on the Squirrels game in Trenton that Ronnie Ray was wearing his number the next day. No one in the stands could figure out who the pitcher was because the programs still had EME on the team. But I took it as a tribute to him so I guess he was a good guy. I hope he can put it together for the Mariners and at least get his cup of coffee. He’s played through a lot of injuries that sapped what once looked like a lot of potential.

Charlie with another fine game
Sosa had a terrible start to the first 4 batters and then pitched very well. Hope organizations continues to pitch Sosa every 5th day. Pill is coming on too.
I still believe Ehire Adrianza is the best SS in the organization. The 20 year old is developing nicely in the Cal League.
There is some good minor league notes in Baggs Post Game Notes:
–Nick Noonan (quad) and Roger Kieschnick (back) both missed some time but are in the lineup for Double-A Richmond again.
–Brandon Belt is having a huge season for Single-A San Jose. He already ranks as the best defensive first baseman in the system, which is saying something because Brett Pill is pretty good around the bag. Belt has terrific strike-zone awareness, too, and Turner applauded his ability to take walks while staying aggressive when he gets a good pitch to hit.
–Tommy Joseph’s numbers don’t look great at Low-A Augusta, but he’s been banged up behind the plate. "The ball’s found him," Turner said. Joseph has the kind of bat that could move quickly once he starts hitting his groove. There’s been an underlying assumption that Joseph will become a first baseman. It’s no coincidence that he’s often compared to a young Paul Konerko. But Turner said Joseph’s game-calling skills are really impressive and he thinks Joseph stands an excellent chance of staying a catcher. Of course, with Buster Posey ahead of him, that might change.
–Chris Dominguez overhauled his swing and is having much better at-bats for Augusta. He arrived with an uppercut swing that suited him in college but led to a lot of strikeouts and didn’t put him in position to handle breaking balls. He’s doing a much better job of competing against them now. He’s got 10 homers, which is impressive in Augusta’s big park. He’s also a plus runner for a big kid and has a plus, plus arm at third base.
Good news on the Dominguez swing change, although it has yet to show up in his stats this year. He has 60 Ks (22%) and only 11 BBs (4%), while slugging only .442 (OBP = .306) in Low-A. In the field he hasn’t been much better – he’s on schedule to exceed 30 errors at 3B if he maintains his current pace. I still say his only options for the majors will be 1B, RF, or P (toe the rubber!).
I’d also love to see them move Joseph down to S-K this week, so he can start at C full-time and try to re-gain his batting confidence, and H. Sanchez can take over the full-time C duties in Augusta.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Really liked the scouting report on Joseph and his play calling/able to stick at catcher. With the Giants drafting about as many catchers as CFs it is going to be difficult to find playing time for everybody. Even if they send two to Arizona and two to S-K. Gotta think Joseph may have to tough it out.
First we hear that TI is the best defensive 1b in organization. Next we hear that Brett Pill is the best defensive 1b in organization. Now we hear that Brandon Belt is the best defensive 1b in organization. The opponent should not think of hitting the ball around 1b. With Pablo Sandoval, Geraldo Posey, Brett Pill, Brandon Belt, Angel Villalona the Giants have plenty organizational depth at 1b.
I did a double-take when I first read that too. However, I think when you re-read it you’ll see that he means “in the minor league system”. I still think Ishi has the best D “in the organization” – certainly nobody is currently better than him.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Adrianza
I’ll begin to believe in Adrianza as soon as he stops vying with Culberson, Fairley, and JCP for the most Ks on the team (he’s got a 19.1% K-rate) and stops making so many errors in the field (on a rate to exceed 20 this year). He’s never going to hit for power like those other 3 guys, so he needs to cut his Ks in half.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
errors?
I haven’t been paying him much attention since I don’t believe in his bat, but my impression was that he could field short better than Uribe right now. Is his defense not all that after all?
I’m not saying that Adrianza is not good defensively, but I’m enough of a contrarian to question all of the knee-jerk comments flying around about him and his unquetioned defensive prowess. I do know that you can’t just look at total error numbers in the minors. Many diamonds have crappy infields, there’s bad lighting for night games, scorekeepers are notoriously bad, and if your fellow teammates can’t catch and throw well it can reflect poorly on your stats. Adrianza did have 30 errors last year in Augusta, though, which is a bit more than can be explained away by all that IMO.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Adrianza’s range is plus, and probably even plus plus, so he gets to balls that others wouldn’t even touch. However, the question is can he make all the other mundane plays on a consistent basis? Also, this year he has continued the disturbing trend he had last year of making many of his errors on throws. I know that he’s supposed to have a good arm, so that is troublesome. This year he can’t blame throwing errors on his 1B, because Belt can pick’it with the best of them.
One more thing, and I know this is still a work-in-progress stat for the minor leagues, but his TotalZone numbers last year were not inspiring:

Dude, c’mon! You know better than to actually go by errors, let alone minor league errors, that are dulled out by some paid-for-by-the-home-team, basement dwelling, cat owner who plays God while he is at the ballpark and still evaluates pitchers based on a W/L record.

Age relative to league is his biggest asset. He’s got a lot of time to develop – especially physically. Dude is skinny as a rail.
If not age, than his biggest asset is his defense – if you believe scouting reports, which read like they spent time watching Omar Vizquel circa 1998.
The rising K% is a concern, but his current rate is much higher than his career average, so it might just be adjusting to a new level.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
In fact Omar Vizquel himself (after playing with Adrianza during an injury rehab) said pretty directly that “his glove will get him to the majors.” So it’s really about giving him time and seeing if his bat can develop to the level where he can just hold his own. One thing he’s always had on his side is a willingness to work counts and take a walk.

errors are not a way to evaluate defense at all
especially in the minor leagues where the fields are complete shit.
Henry Sosa
another note on Sosa was that he was pitching on the fourth day and not the usual fifth day of rest.
Romo, Jr. sighting!
Am I the only one that noticed that we had a season debut last night?
Andrew Romo (brother of …) pitched 1 and 1/3rd innings in relief last night for Fresno - giving up 1 hit, 2 BBs, but no runs. I don’t know if he’s been injured this spring, but he hadn’t pitched for any of the Giants’ farm teams so far this year.
I’m guessing that this will be just a short-term deal in Fresno, and he’ll eventually end up in SJ or Augusta. If not, it would be an incredible leap for him – he ended up his season last year in S-K of the NWL Rookie League.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Burris back at Fresno
He played 2B last night, and Bond moved to 3B, but I’m guessing that was only due to Rent starting his rehab at SS. When Rent comes back to SF, it should be Burris at SS, Bond at 2B, and Guzman/Rohlinger at 3B. I guess that means the end of the Angel Berroa era in Fresno – which makes me so sad – he was such a geat young (in Sabean/Bochy’s thinking) prospect.

Give the kid a chance
I still have hopes for Burriss. Let’s give him at least a year in Fresno, and hope that the foot isn’t a chronic injury, before we write him off. It’s not his fault that the Giants rushed him to the majors without the opportunity to work out his hitting deficiencies in the upper minors for any length of time. He’s got speed and he plays good D, so if his bat ever just becomes average for a SS then we can use him. It’s not like we have a ton of other great SS prospects in our system that are pushing him now.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Actually, he doesn’t seem to have average defensive capability for a major league SS either.

He has plus range and above-average arm, and we saw the soft hands in his time at 2B back in the beginning of the 2009 season. The question was all the errors at SS in the minors.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Scouts consistently knocked him for a below average SS arm while in the minors, and what I saw of him both in the minors and majors certainly concurred with those reports. He didn’t have a really egregious number of errors in the minors, but he did have a pretty terrible UZR at 2B for 2009 in SF.

You’re probably right about his arm, maybe I was mixing his up with Bocock’s arm. As for his time at 2B in SF, I don’t care what UZR showed, I saw him play outstanding D there and he had above-average range – that’s one of the reason they kept him around so long even after it was obvioius his bat was lacking. Finally, the error binge I was referring to was from his time in the AZ Fall League back in 2008. I remember that he had something like 10 errors in 20 games at SS back then.

Yeah, that’s right. He did have a binge in the AFL. I seem to recall he had a knee injury or something of the sort he was trying to play through. It was right after Sabean said he’d be the starting SS and right before they signed Renteria.

We need roster updates
Still no updates on the S-K or AZL Giants rosters, even though S-K starts their regular season this Friday and the AZL starts a week from today. I’m assuming that we’ll find out which of the many college/HS guys that we just drafted have been signed by seeing their names in the box score or on the rosters, well before the Giants officially announce the signings.
