You wonder if it occurs to the Giants that Posey easily could play first base, third base or a corner outfield in the long run, adding years to his career. Again, if you get that cleanup hitter, you can afford (post-Molina) to sign a light-hitting catcher who handles the pitching staff well.

Yes, it has occurred to the Giants.

For this reason: face recognition.
I am certain that Sabean has realized Posey can sell more tickets playing first base than by being hidden behind catcher’s gear.

And wtf Smoltz about Pitch counts – wasn’t he always hurt himself?

I mean, it’s obvious, but the thing a lot of the people calling for Posey to move to first or corner outfield don’t realize is that he is not going to hit .429 forever. He is going to be a good hitter. But he is not going to be anything special as a hitter for first base or left field or right field. As a catcher, he could very well be one of the best in the league. But if he’s a 1B/LF/RF, he’s unlikely to be anything special.

He will be special wherever he plays. He is obviously a special player. He would probably be much better than his peers at C, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be better at other spots. I think he would make a great SS. 1B seems like a waste, though.

Let’s assume Posey would catch ~130 games. You want to trade ~20 extra games of Posey for ~130 games of a bad hitting catcher?

by marcello on Jun 12, 2010 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

do not forget the daily wear and tear that catchers go through. not only physical but also mental. the kid can play and SF organization does have plenty of other positions that a ready, fresh 155 games Geraldo Posey can supply.

Yeah hittting catchers grow on trees

You can’t have both sides of the argument

Proudly adopted Aubrey Huff. You can't beat that!

by Goofus on Jun 12, 2010 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions

These are two different, unrelated statments
  • Players who can catch well and hit well are very rare.
  • Of the catchers who can hit well, the majority manages to continue hitting well in spite of the wear and tear of catching.

There’s no contradiction here.

The first statement is obviously true. As for the second one:

Over the past 15 years or so, the only good hitting catcher I can spot who started declining at a really early age is Russell Martin, and, to a much lesser extent, Jason Kendell (who had 5 great years, then 2 bad years, then 2 good years, then was never good again). Both were overworked, catching over 140 games a year.

On the other hand you have Posada, Piazza, Pudge, Victor Martinez, and Javy Lopez, who all remained very good for a long time. Mauer and McCan are now in their 6th year catching in the majors, and are showing no sings of decline.

As long as he isn’t overworked, Posey should do just fine for at least for 4-5 years. If, after, those years, we see that he’s a good enough hitter to be a really good player at another position, and decide that we want to re-sign him, THEN we can start talking about giving him either the Victor Martinez treatment (splitting time between 1B and C), or the Biggio treatment (just moving him to 2B/3B/OF), depending on just how good his bat is, and how well his legs are doing.

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jun 12, 2010 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Compared to what?

Saying “remained very good” is meaningless unless there are some grounds for comparison with what sorts of hitters they might have been with less catching in the mix. That’s why studies try to use men with comparable early-career stats but who play at different positions, to see how the position tends to affect the hitting.

Uh, I apologize for not conducting an actual scientific research for the purpose of this comment.

I didn’t try to argue that catching doesn’t affect hitting, only that most catchers can take 5-6 years of catching without falling apart.

Where it shows up . . .

. . . is down the line, in later years. As best I recall, studies show that if you compare the careeres of players whose first couple of years or so (I’m not sure of the comp periods used) were very much alike for batting and sort them by primary position played, those who decay worst are #1, catchers, #2 second basemen, #3 everybody else. More or less.

Posey could be a highly useful player catching 108 games a year and playing 1B another 27 games (see the proposed rota elsethread).

Professional baseball analyst since 1980.

by owlcroft on Jun 12, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Another thing to remember

Is that Posey is young in catcher years. Most catcher make it to the majors after at least 2-3 full years of catching in he minors, as well as a few more in high school or college (or Latin America). Posey has caught in only one minor league season, and only 2 college seasons. So he’s fresher than most catchers were when they made the majors.

I was promised lasagna.

Jonathan Sanchez: Often maddening to watch, but capable of perfection on a moment's notice---just like his adoptive father.

by rotorueter on Jun 12, 2010 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Though

Of the catchers mentioned above, the one most similar to Posey in mileage was Russell Martin, who only caught for two years in the minors, and was a 3B in college. So I don’t know what to make of that.

But, like I said, the guy was seriously overworked. The morons let him catch 139 game in his rookie year, 145 in his 2nd year, and 149 (!!) in the 3rd. It was during that year that he started losing his power (.330 SLG and only 3 HR in the second half).

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jun 12, 2010 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

And even then, there’s a correlation/causation risk by automatically linking his decline with overuse (which you’re not explicitly doing) instead of linking it with his blackened soul.

by Grant Brisbee on Jun 12, 2010 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

And what compounds that is that a bunch of those non-catching days often saw him at 3rd base, so he virtually NEVER got a true day off. Way to go Joe Torre!

by rotorueter on Jun 12, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

This is getting ridiculous

You’re saying that Posey would be a “special” hitter even at 1B, and can play a great SS? You do realize that you’ve just declared that he is Alex freaking Rodriguez at his absolute prime, right? Because that’s the only player in the HISOTRY OF THE FUCKING GAME who fits that description.

40 great PA’s, and he’s an inner-inner circle HOFer as far you’re concerned? Are you serious?

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jun 12, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

And, quite frankly, the “save his career” argument is dumb as well. The Giants have control over Posey for six years (it could have been 6 1/2, but they brought him up early this year, so… um, yeah). That’s it. After that, he’s a free agent and there is absolutely NO guarantee that he’ll sign with the Giants. The very idea that we have to worry about Posey when he’s 35 is romantic and idyllic and all, but it’s also stupid.

Also why not sign Carlos Delgado when he is healthy in the middle of the year to get us in the playoffs. If we had Delgado he could probably hit 10 hrs and we could have him start at first, pinch hitting. Posey could take over most catchers playing time, play at first, and pinch hit. Bengie could continue to play some at catcher, pinch hit in clutch. Pat the Bat pinch hits and occasionally plays in out field. Pablo stays at third

The Giants developed several catchers who had respectable careers (Yorvit Torrealba comes to mind) and let them slip away. Shouldn’t Eli Whiteside at least get a look? He seems to be a gamer, and the pitchers like throwing to him.

In one of the odder moments we’ll see all season, college basketball announcer Dick Vitale experienced a scary moment when he was hit by a line drive in the Tropicana Field stands at the start of Thursday’s game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays.

The incident happened on the first pitch of the game as a blast from Toronto’s Fred Lewis(notes) rocketed into Vitale’s season-ticket seats by the third base dugout and hit him square in the ribs.

As I keep saying . . .

. . . all that’s needed is two things: excise the Molina cancer, and use what’s left intelligently. Sad to say, one is about as likely as the other. I will take the liberty of repeating here something I originally included in a FanPost, a proposed rotational use of the available players (here modified by substituting Burrell for Bowker):

Player : Day # 1 2 3 4 5 6 days used
Torres CF x CF CF RF CF = 5/6
Schierholtz RF RF RF RF x RF = 5/6
Burrell x LF LF x LF LF = 4/6
Rowand LF CF x LF CF x = 4/6
Uribe 3B 2B SS x 2B SS = 5/6
Renteria SS SS x SS SS x = 4/6
FSanchez 2B x 2B 2B x 2B = 4/6
Huff 1B 1B 1B 1B 1B x = 5/6
Sandoval x 3B 3B 3B 3B 3B = 5/6
Posey C C x C C 1B = 5/6
Whiteside x x C x x C = 2/6

(Bowkermaniacs can substitute his name for Rowand’s.)

That is a set of lineups that will score some runs—enough runs, with any reasonable projection of the current pitching, to very seriously contend.

Right now, based on what has actually gone forth between the white lines (as opposed to projections from career stats), the Giants look like the 5th-best team in the majors, heading for 96 wins. Regrettably, the 4th best is Colorado, projecting to 98 wins (and San Diego also for 96 wins). I realize that the current W/L columns differ, but if luck evens out, that’s what current performance levels suggest. (Current actual wins pro-rate to 89, and current actual R/OR numbers project to 94 or 95 wins; actual batting and pitching component stats project to that 96.)

And all that was achieved with grotesquely inefficient use of the available talent. Follow the rota listed above, or a reasonable facsimile, and this is a somewhat above-average run-scoring club. So No, please, no whopping mid-season trades, except to dump the Molina and, perhaps, Rowand (unless some super-bargain could be found requiring no great investment of talent in the trade—ha!).

Too much Rowand

I see where you’re going with this, but would just prefer Torres in CF and Rowand as a 4th OF.

Even if Rowand improves and Torres regresses, I don’t see Roawand approaching Torres’ value.

Proudly adopted Aubrey Huff. You can't beat that!

by Goofus on Jun 12, 2010 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.

But I, at least, am a rock-solid believer in giving men occasional days off throughout the season, so a four-man OF rota is necessary. I’m not crazy about Rowand as the 4th guy, and still awaiting the late-reporting precincts before I call the election for Burrell as the 3rd, but I’d rather have some occasional Rowand than three guys trying to play the next 102 games in a row. If Bowker holds up at Fresno, I’d be quite willing to swap him in for Rowand (though with trepidation), but first you need for Rowand to recover a bit (so he’d have at least fringe/marginal trade value), then an actual trade (for which I’d take nobody meaningful in return, and even eat much of his salary).

Or the team could trade a young pitcher (the staff sems set for a good while to come) of real quality—say, just as an example, Wheeler—for an outstanding young outfielder (I’d take any OF position) at or close to the threshhold of major-league play. The non-OF positions are solid enough for now, even with the older guys like Huff, FSanchez, and Uribe, that there is no immediate (meaning for 2011) need to do anything major there; it is the OF corners that are questionable. (We don’t even know yet for sure that Schierholtz is what we hope he is.)

2B

If he’s not going to be a C (which I don’t recommend), Posey’s best position would be at 2B. Having seen him play the infield at FSU, I don’t think he has the range to play SS full-time, but 2B should be no problem. He has the quick feet and the strong arm to be able to turn the double-play with no sweat. 2B is where his bat would be such a huge advantage over the other 2B’s in the league.

That being said, the Giants have more, and much better, 2B (not to mention 1B, 3B, and LF) prospects coming up throught the minors now than they do at C. The only reason to move Posey off C, is if they can sign/develop another C that would be above-average behind the plate and with the bat. Not a likely prospect in the near future. Until then, Posey moves to C as soon as we can drop/bench Bengie – which is no later than the beginning of next year (unless Sabes pulls another brain fart and signs him for another year).

Crawford’s value is at SS. At this point he just hasn’t done anything with the bat (beyond his first 4 week at SJ last year) to make any kind of case for hitting well enough to be an asset at 2B.

He’s really improved his contract rate this year – only 20 K’s in 150 PA’s (13.3%). That’s really good. So the AVG shouldn’t stay in the .250’s for too long. His BB walk rate is back to being awful, though. I don’t know what last year was about. And he’s lost some power.

But I still like him!

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jun 12, 2010 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

His skill set seems to change from one month to the next, but he remains one of the youngest players in the league, and it’s a very low-offense league this year. I still see a decent chance that the lightbulb goes on for him, and he starts hitting and doesn’t stop.

by Evan on Jun 12, 2010 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I have no idea what type of hitter he is anymore, but he’s generally managed to flirt with league average despite always being young for the level he’s in, so he still looks like he might turn out to be a solid 2B one day.

Depends on how you define prospect

Certainly Rohlinger and Downs are much more likely to be at least average MLB third-basemen, than any C that you can point to. Much less likely to ever come though, and surely much further away, would be Biery and Dominguez.

Eh, I'd take Hector Sanchez over Downs and Rohlinger

I see them more as utility guys. I will agree that there isn’t a lot of depth at catcher, but I think the reason for that is because Posey is a can’t miss prospect which is why Jenkins article is stupid.

Posey’s defense is plus. The Giants lied, or are dumb. Play him at catcher, where he will make the all-star team every year, be the darling of the town and nation, and if and when his contract is up, decide whether or not to re-sign him as a C or (if he really does fall off a cliff, like that lousy Joe Mauer) at 1B, or just let him go to New York and join the Randy Winn/Brett Tomko/Cody Ransom Pension Program as Timmy’s personal catcher.

Aarghh.

It just shows, again, how really, really easy to would be to have good squad out there: just ditch BM and it all falls into place: Posey back to C, Huff back to 1B, Schierholtz out in RF again.

I understand tim was a little errant in the first, but I personally think bengie should have blocked both of those wild pitches.

I thought they both should have been blocked, they were wild pitches but if molina still possessed and lateral movement he’d have blocked them pretty soundly.

LOL struggles

Sandoval is having a great year compared to lind and teixeira. Pablo is in his 2nd full season and is ridiculously overweight and pressing himself to much. Where as teixeira is one of the most over-paid, over-rated players in the game and I’m glad he won’t be starting in the all star game. No idea what the deal with lind is, probably just hacking away teixeira style and getting worse results.
