Six months after being drawn in the same group, the most anticipated soccer match in the History of the Universe is upon us: England! United States! For all the marbles! Or at least 1 or 3 points. The last time these two faced off in the World Cup, John Wooden was only 39 years old, Jamie Moyer was just starting high school, and the Giants still played in New York.
Now, the expectations for the US against the Three Lions are quite a bit higher than in 1950, when Joe Gaetjens and the Americans shocked the world on the pitch at Belo Horiztone. Can our porous defense contain Wayne Rooney? Can Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey create goals? Are Jozy Altidore and Gooch Onyewu healthy enough to make a difference today? If Bruce Bochy was coaching and Buster Posey was a goalkeeper, would he start him at striker? These and other questions will be answered by 2pm today.
Have it, McCoven soccer nerds. Should be a fun match, regardless.

We need to keep the ball in the England half of the pitch. Pack the midfield and defense, maybe 4-5-1, and leave a couple of midfielders back to prevent the counter

Stat: The US hasn’t posted a shutout in its last 10 matches. That’s what I meant by porous defense. Unless Tim Howard channels Vincent Enyeama, who was brilliant in goal for Nigeria today (Argentina could have won 5-0), we’ll need to score a lot of goals because we’ll probably be giving up at least one or two.

It would be pretty awesome. These early Cup matches seem to be a lot tighter than they should be, whether from jitters or highs or what. I think the scores will start to open as teams get farther into the tournament, but I’m counting on more low scores and tight matches early on.

I don’t care what people say, I thought they looked good. VERY conservative for most of the second half, but there is obviously a ton of skill on that team for whenever Maradona decides to let them loose.

The ref can caution a player “Stop grabbing people.” or whatever… Maybe the ref thought he saw something, but wasn’t sure, he can give a warning… If the player continues to grab at people or whatever he can get carded.

If Slovenia beats up on Algeria tomorrow, they’ll lead the group and have the edge in goal differential. Which would make the US-Slovenia match on Friday a game the US absolutely cannot lose Need at least another draw, probably a win. No pressure, guys!

That was a great game to watch. To be honest, I think Capello fucked up with his selections for the English squad. Obviously Green’s mistake in goal was a catastrophe for them, but subbing off Milner so early was also odd. Milner shouldn’t have started in the first place.
Also, Rooney should have been played alone up front with Gerrard and Lampard behind him in a triangle attacking formation. Heskey wasted too many chances and Gerrard and Lampard didn’t get enough touches to sneak the ball in to Rooney.
I’m really pleased with our defense. I was more worried about the set pieces, but Onyewu and Demerit killed every ball that was delivered into the box. Also, Tim Howard is incredible.

BB also didn’t have a perfect game. Either Edu or Torres over Clark, at least in a sub role. Clark=BB as Bengie Molina=BB. There are better options available, but they both choose the veteran over skill.
But a point is a point, and I’m not complaining about getting one from England.

Really? I thought the defense looked disorganized. Too many open players, especially on the wings, two guys going for the same ball / player leaving space or players open. I was longing for the days of John Doyle!
Though as I said I didn’t have a chance to see much of their qualifiers so maybe this was an improvement over previous matches.
I think it was more of a tactical decision to give the English midfielders space to roam but make it hard for them to get the ball to their forwards in and around the box. The English wingers all had poor games as far as I’m concerned (still can’t figure out why Joe Cole wasn’t at least a substitution), and Frank Lampard went invisible for most of the match, which is an achievement by itself. I thought our full backs did a very nice job, and our center backs were outstanding after Gerrard’s early goal. Especially Onyewu
