Post-Game Thread: Giants waste another gem from Zito

As the saying goes, when you score one run against Jason Hammel, you score one run against Jason Hammel.

You're still watching these games? I scheduled this post-game thread four weeks ago. Here's how the rest of the Giants' season is going to go (spoilers):

Star-divide

Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit well, pitch well, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit well, pitch poorly, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch poorly, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, win. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, lose. Giants hit poorly, pitch well, win.

Then comes July.

Oh, you're still watching? But I've told you how it all ends. Go to a museum. Read a book. Build a ship in a bottle. Do something else.

Of course, Pat Burrell was 2-4 for Fresno tonight. He'll probably fix things.

Really liked the way he’d take big cuts on the hitter counts, but adjust to contact with two strikes.

12 DPs this year so far. You’d think as a fat guy who hacks he’d rack up lots of DPs, but he only hit in 10 last year and he wasn’t an insane DP machine in the minors. At this rate he’ll break Jim Rice’s GIDP record, which is no small feat.

Schulman, 5/10
In so many words Sunday, Huff said, “I told you so.”

“This is nothing new for me. I have to do this everywhere I go,” he said. “I have to answer questions in spring training that I can’t play defense. I have to prove myself again, and here you are a month later (praising me). It’s like this all the time. When I played for Baltimore every day at first base (last season), I made four errors the whole year.”

Huff laughed when a reporter asked about all the defensive work he did during the spring.

“Every spring training I have all the coaches put me in the extra group working on defense because they believe what they read,” he said. "All you guys write me off as a bad defensive guy and they read it and say, ‘OK, we’ve got to get him out there and work him hard.’ "

Sanchez has a .417 BABIP (.325 career) and a .326/.407/.391 line right now. If his BABIP and/or BB% regress to his career norm, that’ll basically be the definition of an empty .300 hitter.

Hitter field preference

Kent, Burks & Snow home split in 2000:

KENT: .335 / .419 / .567
BURKS: .362 / .446 / .697
SNOW: .313 /.373 / .508

Now, if the Giants knew what any of those numbers meant, they’d kill for anything close to that production at home. Now, this could all be Bonds-effect… and/or juicing, we’ll never know… but it’s not impossible to generate numbers in AT&T.

Meh, Whatever.

The Giants are not going to make the playoffs. If we suck bad enough MAYBE there is a manager change and a front office overhaul.

I’m Just curious to see how Buster does nowadays. The moment they send him down, it’s over for me as far as watching Giants game goes. This season is a complete waste and a regression from a player development standpoint. We are not finding out if either Schierholtz or Bowker could play OF next year. We traded away one of our best offensive player for 75K, and we’re having Buster play 1B instead of getting more innings behind the dish.

Come to think of it, last year’s fortuitous 88 wins was the worst thing that could have happened to the Giants. It stopped player development, and it provided a launching pad for the “sign more veterans, no time for player development” campaign.

It really is tough being a Giants fan. Even when your team does well, it stabs you in the back.

Jonathan Sanchez: Often maddening to watch, but capable of perfection on a moment's notice---just like his adoptive father.

by rotorueter on Jun 2, 2010 6:22 AM PDT up reply actions

I have often been against the “we need a big bat” philosophy, since I think that one true thumper won’t save the rest of this offense. We’re not a great hitting team, and Jason Bay and Matt Holliday on this team wouldn’t change that. But there are functional pieces on this team now: Torres, Sanchez, Huff, Uribe, Posey, Schierholtz. None of them are ever going to sniff a triple crown, but they have all demonstrated that they can have a semblance of a plate approach, which is really what this team needs on a consistent basis.

Now, as for Pablo, 0 for 5 happens. He’s only human, and he somehow managed 3 hits against the best pitcher in baseball right now the day before. He’s batting .286. It’s not like he’s in free fall like Rowand or Molina.

But here’s the problem. He saw twelve pitches, swung at nine of them, and generated 7 outs in 5 plate appearances. And for the offensive centerpiece of a team, that just doesn’t cut it. With the game on the line, you should want your best hitter at the plate with a chance to turn things around. And I don’t want Pablo hitting third.

It’s not Pablo’s fault that he’s the linchpin of this offense, just like it wasn’t Molina’s fault that he was the de facto cleanup hitter. Pablo is who he is, and I don’t think he’s going to change. But if he can’t hang back and take a few pitchers or lay off a high fastball, then he shouldn’t be the #3 hitter.

Pablo makes a fabulous complimentary piece, but he can’t be the main cog. At least not right now. It’s possible that he still has many fantastic years ahead of him right now. But right now, Pablo can’t lead this team.

You never improve through free agency

1. Hitters don’t like to come here, and you have to overpay.
2. Length of contract is miserable.

That’s why the team needs to be built around the draft, which the Giants have failed to do so year after year. The players that would have been selected in the first round when we traded away a 1st round pick for Michael Tucker should be contributing now. But he isn’t. Why? Cause we didn’t have a pick.

The best way to acquire that bat is to trade away center pieces to contending teams who are eager for that final piece to put them over the top. Jason Schmidt could have been that piece. But sabean believed in fool’s gold.

Fast forward to this year. If the Giants are 5.5 games out at the end of July and chasing 3 teams, do you genuinely believe Sabean will sell or buy? He’s going to buy. He’s going to mortgage the farm in hopes of chasing that wild card.

Why? because his job is probably on the time. It’s an never ending cycle. We need to trade AWAY pieces to get more pieces.

But no, Sabean believes we are always one or 2 moves away from winning a championship, so we should never trade away pieces, even if it is painfully obvious that stuck in 80 win land is the worst thing you can do. You don’t get to the playoffs, and you don’t draft high enough for impact bat.

What Sabean should really be doing is talking up how close our team is to making a deep run. The pitching is there. The pitching is LOCKED UP. And our lineup is less awful than it used to be. If players are willing to be traded to the Nationals, then we should be able to convince hitters to come be the centerpiece for our lineup. There’s enough talent on the market in the upcoming FA class that we would be able to do it… if we hadn’t already spent all our money. Between Huff and Molina, we have… $7.5 million coming off the books. And we’re already over budget. Whoops.

Hitters don't like to come to SF?

I’m not so sure if that’s really true. Sabean says it is, which automatically makes me question the statement’s veracity.

If it is true that hitters don’t like to come to SF, I think a larger reason than “cold weather” and “pitcher’s park” (that really isn’t) may be the GM himself and the bad vibe coming off a team going nowhere as long as that GM is running things.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?

A big bat

makes other hitters around him better. The Giants have NO ONE that strikes fear into a pitchers heart. Pablo sooner or later has to become more patient. I am not asking him to become Bret Butler (he didn’t start the at-bat until it was 3-2). But it is ridiculous at times.

Regardless of whether or not it’s true, a valuable offensive player makes a team better. If this team were to dump Molina, move Posey behind the plate where he belongs, move Huff back to 1st where he costs us less on defense, get rid of Rowand, move Torres to CF, start Schierholtz in right and let him develop, and acquire someone like Josh Willingham or Shin-Soo Choo to play left, this lineup is suddenly a hell of a lot better.

I recognize that this will never happen, but it illuminates that this team is capable of fielding a league average-ish team with options that are already mostly available in-house.

I know you weren’t, but I wanted to make the point that you don’t need to bring in Albert Pujols to teach everybody how to hit in order to make the lineup better.

Great hitters make the rest of the lineup better because everybody else plays a less critical role. It’s how you keep Molina from batting cleanup, and move hitters like Sandoval and Uribe down in the order.

Hey, the Sharks never got shut out by Niemi, so I don’t consider that a perfect game or whatever.

In fact, they were only shut out three times the entire year – once against the Coyotes, which was a 0-0 tie that went to the shootout; once against the Sabres right before the Olympic Break, which had them against the Jimenez of goalies in Ryan Miller; and once against Colorado in the Game 3 that ended in a way I’d rather not talk about. That’s more than can be said about the Giants.

Not only is molina the slowest player in the majors by a staggering amount, but he somehow got noticeably slower this year. Bengie is done, the giants need to understand this before they give him 500 more PA’s and waste another year. Not only is his arm non existant, but he rarely moves behind the plate and now plays pitches he should block off the carrum off the backstop. What’s worse is the fact that bengie has a giant pity party surrounding him, which makes it so no matter what he’s gonna get every incenitive on that contract and retard posey growth and waste whitesides time.

It does affect how pitchers will pitch to you, though. If you’re facing a punchless Pittsburgh lineup, you can throw lots of junk because he’s the only decent hitter, or you can throw lots of fastballs since he doesn’t have anybody behind him driving him in. In 2005, he hit .291 and only had 54 R and 35 RBIs. Being the only hitter of consequence might change your approach. It’s just a bit of speculation.

seriously? I love Posey just as much as the next guy/girl/guy, but you would bat a player with less than 50 career MLB AB’s second whilst putting a batting champion/ 3-time all star 8th? Granted the title was 4 years ago, but he’s been nothing but above average this year for us and has done nothing to deserve that

Also, those All-Star nods primarily come from the fact that every team has to have at least one player, and Freddy played for the Pirates. In 3 All-Star appearances, he got 3 at-bats, and saw 6 pitches in total; he didn’t even make an appearance in last year’s ASG.

That’s not meant as a slight to Freddy; after all, all three of those years Chase Utley started over him, and I don’t think that anybody here will argue that Freddy Sanchez is better than Chase Utley. But he’s not a franchise player by any means, just a good piece to a competitive ballclub.

I won’t speculate on where he should bat; I think that for now, it’s easiest for Posey to bat 6th and keep Sanchez 2nd; I think that Sanchez and Torres work well together in the order, and there’s no reason to jump the gun on Posey. If Posey continues to produce, then you talk seriously about moving him up in the order.

Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.

by Solidarity on Jun 2, 2010 2:00 AM PDT up reply actions

This I can agree with. If Posey keeps his production high, then I can see moving him up as a good move. But until then Freddy is doing great in the 2 slot and there’s no need to nix that within the next couple weeks, unless Freddy starts to struggle, or if Posey is still batting .500

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

LOL

This is why Brian Sabean wanted him, for all of his past acomplishments. I’m not hating on Mole, I’ve liked his defense and he’s been pretty ok at the plate. I do kind of agree with the putting Posey in the 2 spot but not exactly for the same reason. He’s still new, and even though he has a good head on his shoulders, we shouldn’t be putting that much pressure on him just yet, he’s doing fine in the 6 spot and even he gets nervous like last night in the bottom of the 9th last out, you could tell he was nervous, didn’t want to make an out and its completely understandable for the rook.

So, I really hate to say it

But man do we need a guy like Prince Fielder. Obviuosly I’m not a supporter of CAIN 4 FIELDER, but, hey, if you gotta trade MadBum or a combo of other good prospects for one and a half years of a guy like Fielder in his prime, well, you gotta do it.

Keep Huff in left, and move Buster to C. Ideally, shuffle Rowand out of the lineup too.

Torres CF
Sanchez 2B
Sandoval 3B
Fielder 1B
Huff LF
Posey C
Uribe SS
Schierholtz RF

Now doesn’t that look like a lineup that might theoretically produce some runs from time to time?

Fielder is having another down year. It’s weird how he alternates between elite slugger and good but not great hitter. His OPS in his 5 years in the majors:

.831
.1.013
.879
1.014
.822

He was a great player in 2009 and 2007, but a pretty average one in 2006, 2008, and so far in 2010.

Permanent solution to a temporary problem...or possibly the other way around.

I’d rather see us bomb one more year and get some better bats in the draft that don’t get senior citizen meals at Denny’s before the end of 2012.

Sure, MadBum isn’t irreplaceable, but with the staff we’ve got locked in right now, it would be nice to see him seamlessly replace the ones that leave/retire/get injured by the time he’s ready.

Besides, even if Fielder had a stellar year, we would be fighting to maintain or defeat our own mediocrity. If anything, it would reinforce in the minds of Sabochean the idea that our problem players aren’t really problems, and further guarantee their presence in the lineup: “Molina doesn’t suck, he just needed another veteran bat around the clubhouse to motivate and inspire him! See all these games we’re winning 2-1 instead of losing 1-0? Problem solved!”

I'm no apologist,

but it has been a SMALL comfort that we have yet to go down to or below .500 this season.

The value of a .500 record is entirely dependent on how well the rest of the division is playing, of course, but our 2010 Giants aren’t officially losers…YET.

That being said, I try to take win totals with a grain of salt, for similar reasons we all had for supporting Timmy for his second CY. We’ve had many losses already that we clearly “deserved” to lose, due to poor hitting, dumb mistakes on the mound or running the bases, etc. But we’ve also had some losses that seemed heartbreaking or even downright unfair, precisely because the team WAS playing so well, and didn’t even necessarily seem outmatched. The A’s series is a good recent example. We made their defense look amazing, as it seemed like they were constantly snaring sizzling line drives, making astounding outfield catches, etc.

Yes, I’m disappointed with this team, but not with its potential. Like many here, I’m more upset with management. Rearranging defensive positions does not make players hit better. Posey is ready, dammit. Molina has led a satisfying career, but he’s done. Bowker and Scheirholtz need a chance. And on and on…

For clarity’s sake, I don’t hate Rowand, or Molina, or Renteria, I’m just furious with the lack of accountability in realizing that these guys cannot and should not be depended upon, and that the others should be given a chance to carry this team (ESPECIALLY when they have shown signs of being able to do so..!) Posey isn’t the Messiah for this team, but side by side I think he exceeds Molina in virtually every category and should be given a chance to learn in the ones he does not.

Better to be a Giants fan than an Athletic supporter!
