I Should Have Never Raised a Giants Fan

I recently graduated from college, so I went home and celebrated with my parents. I'm a simple person who didn't need a graduation party. I instead celebrated this occasion by drinking beers with my father and watching the Giants play Arizona over the weekend. As we were watching Matt Cain shutdown the Diamondbacks my dad made an interesting comment. He said, "I should have never raised a Giants fan."

I laughed for a second, then I asked him what he meant? He said he should have never raised a Giants fan, because the Giants have brought him nothing but heartbreak over the years and that I should have never been subjected to the same heartbreak.

Now my dad is almost 60 years old. He's watched the Giants since they moved to the Bay Area. His favorite player of all-time is Willie McCovey. He's seen the highs and lows of the Giants. He told me how the 1970's Giants were plain terrible and how the 1980's Giants were some of the most exciting teams he's ever seen. And for someone who has never read this site, he bascially has the same opinion about Sabean, Bochy, and what the lineup should look like everyday with MCC. He has truly seen it all when it comes to our beloved Giants.

It's too late for me, I'm to integrated into the Giants culture at this point. I watched my first Giants game at Candlestick in the early 90's, fell in love with Matt Williams and never looked back. And you know what the Giants have brought me? Nothing but heartache.

So back to my original point, why did my father raise a Giants fan? He raised me as a Giants fan because baseball is a fathers and sons game. All of us have great stories about watching the Giants with our father. Even as I get older, I still enjoy watching and discussing the Giants with my dad. It's the one thing we will always have in common. My father enjoyed watching Mays and McCovey with his father and he enjoys watching the Giants with me. I hope when I start a family my son or daughter will enjoy watching the Giants with me.

I'm glad I was raised as a Giants fan, because it gave me a chance to connect with my father. That is what I will cherish about the Giants for the rest of my life.
