Lance Berkman?
An opinion piece, not based in fact at all, but the Giants were mentioned. "They'd [younger players] cost more in terms of prospects, however, and that might make a team like the Giants interested in seeing what it would take to pry Berkman away from Houston. He's just old enough that Brian Sabean might be interested in buying the next four years of his career." Sick burn.

Buster Posey, Madison Bumgarner and Matt Cain for Berkman!

I'd love to have Berkman
But probably not if the Huff experiment continues to pay dividends.

Yeah, I'm in this line
Berkman could be a decent rental (depending on the cost) but if Huff continues to do well then hopefully we won’t need a 1B.

Then again, though...
He does have a 2011 club option on that contract, and as far as I’m aware, we don’t really have a 1B lined up for next year (esp since we certainly won’t be involved in the Fielder signing or anything similar).

Oh, my point being
That trading for 1 1/2 years of Berkman might be a cool idea. That would mean we could have a legitimate power hitter in the lineup protecting Pablo and putting up a .900 OPS.
Rowand CF
Sanchez 2B
Sandoval 3B
Berkman 1B
DeRosa LF
Posey C
Schierholtz RF

That line up looks almost legitimate
also as far as the SS, doesn’t Uribe have a club option in his contract? Or maybe Crawford will stop striking out occasionally…
/knows Sabean will exercise Renteria’s option

Me too. Unless Huff starts hitting something like .250/.300/.350, I don’t want Sabean anywhere near Berkman. You know he’s going to think “We’ve got Renteria’s $10M coming off the books, we can afford to exercise the option!” and then Berkman will hurt his knee again and play 100 mediocre games while hitting cleanup every day because he’s a veteran. Huff is more than adequate for our current offensive needs, and he’s being paid peanuts with no long-term commitment. Berkman’s buyout is 67% of Huff’s 2010 salary.
Goodbye, Steven Johnson, we hardly knew ye. Seriously, that was short.
I remember that. But he mentioned that being traded to a contender wouldn’t mean he’d be with that team for the long term. Just wants to play for a contender

Well we don’t like him either. So there.

If Berkman can prove he is healthy, I wouldn’t mind seeing Sabean “kick the tires” on him. He averages something like 150 games a year, so I have to believe the injury risk is fairly small for 1.5 seasons. I just wonder how much the Astros would want in return though? Its not really a salary dump unless they really don’t want to pay the $2 mil buyout, so their asking price might be pretty high (prospect wise)
I'm a lot more interested
in an old Lance Berkman than an old Jermaine Dye or Eric Byrnes, let’s say that.

My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

I'd rather take Oswalt off of their hands
Dumped Edgar Renteria and adopted Buster Posey. Biggest upgrade since George Jefferson moved up to a deluxe apartment on the east side!
