Gerald Posey Called Up

in an Twitter post late Friday night, baggs said: "RT @extrabaggs: Unconfirmed, but source tells me Giants will call up Buster Posey prior to tomorrow night's game. http://bit.ly/bGKdVg" This info, along with ESPN's random news that Posey was on his way up soon leads me to believe that Gerald "Buster" Demp Posey III has been called up to the bigs and will crack Saturday nights starting lineup. Just what the dr ordered for the holliday. I'll have a weekend please. Make it a three day. Gigantes

the funny thing is, though

THIS IS THE YEAR where the team’s paying Lincecum $7 million+ more than they’d have had to had they kept him in the minors for a couple more weeks. You’d think it would be fresh in their minds right about now!

I’m excited to see Posey playing everyday, but it doesn’t mean the Giants aren’t completely fiscally irresponsible.

by marcello on May 29, 2010 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions

In all fairness to the organization, Timmy is the extreme exception. Most players in Super II make $2-3 million, so the move will likely only cost them a couple of million, not the 7+ Timmy did by not waiting the week. However, those couple of million can always come in handy

Great point. I forgot that it would cause his subsequent salaries to increase the other years. Still, the nice thing is arbitration is based off how a player plays, and there is always the chance of buying out the arb years.

I guess I’m not going to get too upset right now over something that may happen a couple of years down the road, especially when the thing that has to happen involves Buster Posey being a good/great player

by Splash Down on May 29, 2010 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

exactly this

But, Sabes says: "But when we bring him here, we want to make sure he’s on the field at least five days a week."

So, if Bork tries the “super glue Buster to the bench” move again, he’ll be FIRED for INSUBORDINATION.

objectively, Molina can barely run to first base

he can’t get out of his crouch to block pitches, and he has no power. What the fuck? he shouldn’t be in the lineup. It’s too bad it will have to come to this; Bengie doesn’t deserve to be booed, but how else do you as fans tell management that he doesn’t belong in the lineup. Whiteside and Posey should do the catching and Bengie should be the designated whiner.

Why does this have to be bittersweet?

Is it so hard to wait a couple weeks? I want to be excited, but it is hard to be excited when you realize that this move will make Posey a Super Two and hurt the Giants financial flexibility down the line.

Every move the Giants seem to make doesn’t make financial sense and is just another way management will tell us, “Well, we can’t afford Player X.” Yeah, you can’t afford Player X because you made stupid financial decisions and are paying Aaron Rowand $12 million a year, you darn jacka@#es!!

The FO has said all along they will do what it takes to make the team better and that money is not the issue. This is in line with what Sabean said on Thursday about not signing Holiday or another top line FA hitter. It is not like they have not thought about the Super-2 question. It has been widely speculated that they would not call him up until that was not an issue. I give them props for making a move that will improve this team now. I just hope they don’t fuck it up.

Look I am one of the biggest Sabean critics out there. The F. Sanchez and particularly DeRosa signings were absurd. The Zito and Rowand signings were horrid, but they were 4 years ago. I think it is time to move on. They were never going to sign Holiday and giving him the contract the Cards did would have been insane. Posey coming up is a good thing. Management recognizes that the offense is terrible and they are doing what they can to fix it now. This is something that KLAW and most respectable baseball people say they should have done months ago. I . am happy.

It's not instead of, it's as well as

The Giants are a $90m payroll team. Doing stuff like this with Lincecum and potentially Posey makes us into a $85m or less payroll team.

The question you should always ask in any transaction is “how many additional wins will this get me, and how much will it cost”. The Giants are willing to pay, say, $5m for an extra two weeks of Posey – even if you are the biggest Posey fan in the world, that’s like 0.2 wins (2 weeks of Pujols is about half a win). So are talking about $25m/win, best case scenario.

Could we have spent that $5m better this season?

Remember when Sandoval moved to 3B “for the meantime” because there wasn’t room for him to catch in the majors. And then remember how he never went back? This team has a pretty recent history of forgetting that a guy is supposed to play catcher for no other reason than that they start playing him somewhere else.

I don;t understand the shock

1) Sabean said this was happening on his show with Ralph Thursday
2) He also promised he would play at least 5 days a week
3) He will not make the offense great, but he will make the offense better
4) The super-2 thing is complicated and as I have said before, if the Giants have a position player reach super-2 status, that would be a problem one wants to have.
5) He will learn how to catch and will almost certainly be the starting C next year regardless of what happens.

Concern:
My biggest worry is that they will find a way to include Posey in the lineup but not improve it. I.e., for this to have impact, Posey needs to replace a player who is not currently producing. There are many to chose from. The ideal one for me is Rowand (Huff to LF, Torres to CF, Nate RF). Next on the list for me would be Molina. Sadly neither will happen and it will be Posey replacing Nate which is probably not a huge upgrade (today).

So, if the rational reason assumed for leaving him in AAA was because they were wisely trying to save money, I suppose that can be defenestrated.

Now, it’s obvious there was basically no reason to sign Molina, or to leave Posey in AAA. They weren’t being cheap, they were being dumb. Awesome.

I watched Posey play last night in Salt Lake...

…. he was the best position player on the field by a mile. His first three at-bats were all very similar. He worked the count, saw a lot of pitches, and hit the ball hard on the screws each time. First ball was hit to the wall for a double, the second was smoked right at the center fielder, and the third knocked in some ribbies. His forth at-bat he drew a walk and by his final at-bat the Griz were up 8-0 and he didn’t look quite as focused. The surprising thing is even in his last at bat were he fell behind 0-2 and then popped up the next pitch was how hard the ball still came off his bat.

Posey just looks like a ballplayer… I saw him last year and he has put on a lot of weight especially in his legs and ass. I think with his build the power will come! He was playing first base last night and he was the obvious leader of the team out there. This was especially impressive to me with all the veteran farm hands out on the field (Holm, Downs, etc.). The one time that MadBum got in a little trouble in the 2nd inning it was Posey who walked in from 1B to have a word with him and calm him down.

I have seen some good hitters come through Salt Lake… most recently Brandon Wood and Posey is the best looking talent I have seen. I am bummed that I won’t get to see him catch tonight. I was really looking forward to it. Oh, and BTW it is only a matter of time till Bumgarner is in the big league rotation. He has the stuff to contribute now and he can work on his off-speed stuff in the bigs. His fastball and splitter will get ML hitters out. The future is looking bright!

The timing with the signing of Burrell seems a bit weird, especially since Burrell will likely play some 1B when he is put on the roster. Maybe they are calling him up for a couple of weeks to get Burrell some time to get ABs in AAA, and they’ll send Buster back down for a couple of weeks later to avoid Super 2.

y'know

Not long ago, when Sabean was going off on how Posey wasn’t ready, GRM was saying that he was only saying that because he would get in trouble for saying it was a Super 2 issue.

Of course, now that they called Posey up early, I’m sure this will become the correct decision.

Obviously, Sabean really doesn’t care about Super 2, so he must have been telling the truth about Posey not being ready. But Posey is up, so he must be ready. So Sabean must have been spinning by saying that Posey wasn’t ready, so he must have been covering and it was a Super 2 issue.

Even in the best case scenario, two weeks of Posey is probably less than half a WAR.

Plus it comes with a defensive downgrade. It doesn’t HAVE to – they could have Posey catch, especially as bad as Molina’s looking – but it is.

ok, but does WAR take into account the context the player is entering, i.e. the absolute dungheap of a lineup that the Giants are sporting? I feel like one good AB is the difference in many of our games, more so than for most teams.

The defensive downgrade- is that Huff in LF?

And I see Bengie’s decline accelerating rapidly. Methinks Posey is going to catch more games as the year goes on.

No

I don’t believe Posey’s presence in the lineup will make any kind of difference. Especially considering the other moves that will be required to get him in the lineup.

He isn’t up to replace Molina (who fucking sucks ass right now).
Moving him to 1B and Huff to LF while benching Nate or Bowker is just reshuffling deckchairs. Posey isn’t going to be appreciably better than Huff at 1B.

Having said that, what exactly are the business benefits of calling up Posey in the final few weeks of Super 2 eligibility? Maybe he means a few extra tickets for the Rockies games on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Orioles series in mid-June, but probably not a huge number. I doubt there are going to be 10,000 extra gameday walk-ups just to see Posey. And the other home series in June are the A’s (probably close to sold out), Red Sox (almost certainly sold out) and Dodgers (close to sold out).

If the plan for getting Buster playing time is to put him at first, move Huff to left and sit Nate

Then I have a hard time seeing how Buster improves the lineup. Now, if Buster plays over Rowand or Molina, then yeah the offense is better. But taking out one of our best hitters and defenders for Buster strikes me as a wash if anything.

Imagine it from my perspective.

"Career potential: situational lefty." Situation: Ragnarok, bases loaded, Odin at the plate. You know who's getting the call.

I don't like this move

Because I don’t think Posey’s offense – Huff’s LF defense > Nate’s offense +Nate’s RF defense (which leads to Torres’ LF defense)

If that makes sense.

My rule for the 2010 Giants: Everyone with an OPS over .800 gets a pass.

If they’d sit Rowand… excuse me, “give the gritty veteran some well earned time off” then it might not be so bad; but you know Rowand will be hitting .109 and still be in the damn line-up everyday!

The last time a major Bay Area sports team won a championship was January 29, 1995. Brian Sabean began his tenure with the Giants in 1996. There's only one explanation: Space Nazis are using HAARP mind-control rays on Northern California. We're through the looking glass here, people.

is that the past tense or the imperative?

was there supposed to be a comma there, or what are “hey fuckers?”

if Freddie Sanchez, Mark DeRosa and Aubrey Huff are the answer, I guess I just didn't understand the question.

like I wrote last week, since Buster is in the Hot Zone right NOW

this is the best time to call him up.

Well, really what I wrote was that it was no use calling him up last weekend because he was cold, it would be better to either wait until he was hot again or just run out the Super 2 clock. However, it seems Sabean is afraid of having bad stretch against the NL West and wants some offense from somewhere.

The money lies in the RBIs

OMG THIS IS THE WORST THING EVER TO HAPPEN TO THE GIANTS ORGANIZATION IN 127 SEASONS

Brian Sabean strongly encourages you to disregard the drudgery of your employment responsibilities and join him in the consumption of spirituous libations.

I think you’re severely misinterpreting out reaction here.

I’m late to this conversation, but I’m throwing my thoughts into the void anyway.

I like seeing Posey up – I think it’ll be fun to watch him play, and I think he should have been the Opening Day catcher. I don’t understand calling him up now when he’s so close to avoiding Super-2, thus saving money that could be used to better the team in other ways (maybe Posey goes down when Burrell comes up?). I hate that Posey has now started three games at first base and hasn’t caught at all — that just seems really damn stupid to me.

I feel prickishly demanding!

I couldn't be prouder of my recent adoptee - Tim Lincecum's dealer. He provides the secret fuel behind both Cy Youngs. Also, he taught Timmy the change-up.
