We've been clamoring for lineup changes. Some, have suggested Huff playing in left field. Well we got both yesterday. But can we be happy about it? No. Because what does Bochy do with these changes: what he ALWAYS does, he goes older. And in this case slower. It is all he knows how to do. Huff in left might be fine - if Posey was around to play first so as to give Posey a day off from catching. (Lets face it folks, there is no reason other than Sabean's pride that Molina is still the starter. He has 10 RBI and 6 extra-base hits hitting in a 4/5 slot 40+ games into the season. He's a below average defensive catcher and of course, a huge liability on the bases. Posey should be behind the dish, now. But Molina's gonna be the guy all year. GREAT!)
So yesterday we have Huff, Rowand and Torres as the outfield. No Bowker. And even more quizzical, no Nate. What has Nate done to deserve being benched? He had a shoulder ding that kept him out a couple days, but since Saturday he's said he's ready to go. But he sits. Rowand? Can't sit him. Never mind that he's hitting .235, with a .273 OBP. Never mind that he looks awful at the plate. Never mind that Torres is a better defensive center fielder, opening up the corners for Bowker and Schierholtz. Gotta play those guys with the "proven track records." Even if those "proven track records" are mediocre at best.
Also we've wanted Uribe at short. At least I have. Well, now we may get it. Renteria's hammy is not good. And hammy's can be a bitch. I know its cool to rag on Rent. We do it for sport. Why is a little unclear to me. It's not his fault that Sabean overpaid him. Nor is it his fault that Sabean signed him instead of the guy he should have signed, Orlando Hudson. All Rent has done this year (when healthy - and admittedly that HAS been a problem) is hit .326 with an OBP of 372. Plus he's been solid at short. I got news for you - if he's DL'd its gonna hurt. Not only does that mean Uribe everyday at ss (I think he's better playing 4 or 5 games a week), but there is NO legitimate backup. Gawd help them if Uribe goes down.
Soon, we all are going to start talking/thinking about deadline trades. Well, I've reached the conclusion that I don't want a trade made. Not because I don't think they need to make moves, but because I have absolutely no confidence in Sabean's ability to make a good deal. I don't want one or two prospects traded for a rental player that will underperform in SF. We'e seen that before. If he can get someone just for cash, fine. Otherwise, I just think he'll screw it up.
I can't see this as a contending team. It's too slow. It's too power deficient. Its too old. It's too impatient. Mostly, its too Bochy and too Sabean. So all I can hope for is if they have another 80 something win season, the so-called leadership will decide its not enough and we can get some change around here. I'm not holding my breath.
