That’s not really a defense. That’s 4 ABs. The Giants are bad at hitting and make a ton of outs. No need to purposely make more.

by Giant among Angels on May 25, 2010 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions

They’re also making non-productive outs. Given the offense of late, one bunt with a runner on second and nobody out is going to be negligibly detrimental to the team in the long run. If it pays off and shakes the team out of this funk, I’ll take it.

You can’t really muddle statistics and psychology.

by Giant among Angels on May 25, 2010 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I know you do. But the longer a scoreless streak goes on, the more the Giants hitters are going to press. Hacking at bad patching, swinging for the fences, and so on. We’ve seen it before this season.

Not making outs is great, but a sac bunt every once in a while is not a world-ender if you’re not making a philosophy out of it. I get the mathematical background, but it’s a gamble its own with its set of parameters that in this instance might have favored the Giants in its way.

Unless you can control for all variables and demonstrate a 1:1 causal relationship between, it’s not fact. Is it an excellent guidepost? Certainly. But it doesn’t, strictly speaking, make it fact.

Yes, it’s compelling. Yes, it’s valuable information when making risk assessment. And yes, there might be a large enough body of evidence to disprove or nearly disprove all other arguments on a macroscopic scale. But it doesn’t make sac bunting bad in all situations all the time ever, which was more or less the assertion by most of the people posting.

It has value when you need one run to win, and it has some value to keep the defense honest.

However, it absolutely lowers the expectancy of the number of runs that you will score from that game state.

by DrStankus on May 25, 2010 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Right. I’m not contradicting you on that point. But run expectancy does not equate to the number of runs scored in the microcosm. If you do it 100 times, it’s probably going to be measurably worse than if it had never been done at all. But in a single instance, it’s a gamble, and comes down to risk assessment. And in this instance, “How badly do we need to score one run, and am I willing to trade an out for that 90 feet?”

After the leadoff double in the 1st, I thought that the out probably would be worth it, particularly given our awful, terrible, abysmal 40 sOPS+ in the first inning so far this year (SSS alert, I know).

My point comes down to, it’s a matter of risk assessment. The Giants “played it safe” by opting the higher run expectancy and failed. Gambling by taking the extra 90 feet might have paid off, and might have offered a psychological edge. Neither is a “wrong” decision, really.

It’s kind of aloof BS, if you ask me. “Your argument is faulty, and therefore not worth the effort to dignify with a counterpoint.”

I don’t really give a fuck either way, since I was just trying to advocate for a couple of guys who weren’t expressing their point very well, but it’s still passive aggressive.
