John Lindsey's .902 OPS MLE is even shinier.

Granted, Lindsey is 33 years old and plays first base.

But my point is, you look at that list and it’s not like Posey is standing out among a bunch of hitting prospects – he’s standing out amid a pack of has-beens and never-wases.

Side note: Lindsey is in his 16th season in the minors without so much as a cup of coffee. 1500 games in pro ball and not one of them for a major league team. That’s a whole lot of bus rides.

by Missing Barry on May 25, 2010 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I still don’t think being as good as a bunch of career minor leaguers, even the cream of the crop of career minor leaguers, is anything very impressive.

MLEs are a different matter and I think they make a good case that Posey’s bat is probably ready for the major leagues.

Adoptive parent of Kevin Frandsen, now stopping gaps in...Anaheim?

by EliminateMe on May 25, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

This is the point. The league leaders in hitting are all long-time minor leaguers, EXCEPT Posey. Basically, he’s hitting like he’s spent four years in AAA, but he’s only 23. I’m betting it took them awhile to be able to hit that well, but Posey did it quickly, which indicates he adjusts rapidly and is already talented beyond his age.

I’m not sure that age matters in this situation, though. If we’re talking about their ability to perform at the MLB level right now, it’s not clear to me that a given performance at a younger age makes you more likely to do better at the higher level. It very clearly means very, very good things for your future performance, I’m just not sure it means anything for how ready you are to perform right now.

by Missing Barry on May 25, 2010 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions

More years of minor league expereince

should mean better performance, at least until skills decline. So Buster has 1+ years of experience as a pro and the guys he is competing with (without looking it up) have at least 5. You’re right age isn’t the point.

Sabean's being consistent, but the message may not

be what we want to hear. What he’s telling us is that:

1. Unless Huff and Molina are hurt or traded later, there will be no Posey this year.
2. As we knew already, Sabean has no use for PCL hitting results. Posey might as well be hitting on the moon.

Lastly, and I hate to bring this up again, but am I the only person who feels that Sabean is still not sold on Posey as a major league catcher, no matter what Steve Decker can do with him? More to the point, would Sabean trade Posey if he was offered a stud hitter at a position of need?

An excellent question, but for some reason Sabes may not even give Posey a sniff of the major leagues this year. I now think it’s likely that both Posey and Bumgarner won’t see SF until 2011, unless the team falls totally out of contention and Sabean fire-sales a bunch of fannies to contenders in late July.

If they’re out of it at the deadline, Sabean could let other teams rent Huff, Molina, and Uribe, pehaps even Renteria. In that scenario, we’ll see the kids. But short of that, I’m starting to think that Sabes won’t let either of these guys up here this year, hence the talk about someone other than MadBum to replace Wellemeyer.

Responsible for the last great homegrown Giants team.

by Al Rosen on May 25, 2010 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Madison is a different story though it isn’t fair to compare Bumgarner and Posey. Bumgarner had a really rough time with his decrease in velocity and lack of good secondary pitches and he needed to spend some time in AAA (and he should stay there for a bit longer). He didn’t start doing well again until his last few starts. Posey has done well since he started and could come up now though from what I heard he does have to work on his defense he’s not completely inept behind the plate. But what I’m trying to say is that they’re two different situations and Bumgarner should stay in the minors. Plus i’d like to see YEAH JOEY first.

Posey still has a grand total of 134 starts as a catcher in the minors… not having brought up a catcher of his age and with his experience is evidence of nothing.

Utter frustration and futility.

Actually JD, it is evidence of something;

namely that Sabean doesn’t think he’s ready, for exactly the reason you state: inexperience.

Look, we wouldn’t be having these gyrations right about now if the offense Sabean built hadn’t tanked already due to damaged goods Sabean bought (DeRosa and Sanchez), bad investments (see DeRosa, Sanchez, Rowand, and Molina), a weak farm system, and Pablo’s girth and crashing back to earth. Optimally, Posey and MadBum would get all of 2010 to get experience at AAA and come up to join the big club next year.

But this team’s 1-4 starters are too good to waste like this, so Sabean’s mistakes are magnified.

I also think it is the problem with having a General Manager who is perceived to be on the “hot seat” and who has a relatively short contract. He is incentivized to do two things: 1) Win now and 2) Make smart financial decisions. This is why I don’t think the super-2 issue is relevant. Sabean will either be long gone or will have a long-term contract by the time that comes up. I strongly suspect he is keeping Posey down now because he does not think Posey will so much of upgrade over Molina that he can justify the $6MM mistake.

Winning now and making smart financial decisions are very rarely done at the same time.

That’s a different argument… you said ‘no matter what Steve Decker can do with him’. He is in fact inexperienced and it is not unreasonable to want to give Decker more than 7 weeks to work with the guy. Talk about premature matriculation…
If you do bring him up, are you expecting him to immediately contribute offensively? While he’s learning a demanding defensive position? And with the expectation that his contribution will come in a pennant race? All while spending less time in the minors learning the craft professionally than Johnny Fucking Bench? Even Matt Wieters (the every day catcher who was called up the fastest I am aware of) had 169 games started and was considered to be a more polished defender and a better power bat than Buster. And he was going to a team nobody expected to win.
I just don’t think it’s a good idea to risk your best prospect’s development to bring him up in so historically short of a time. Especially to save an offense that is more than one bat away from being good.
Having said all that, I do greatly fear Sabean will yet again undervalue young potential and overpay for aging mediocrity…

Utter frustration and futility.

JD, he's not the sole answer

and it isn’t worth bringing him up early to put him in an impossible situation. My point is that Sabean appears to have 2011 etched in stone for him, regardless of any great strides he may make with Decker this year. In the long term, that’s OK. But it dooms us to another lost year of great pitching thanks to Sabean’s mistakes.

I agree, but don’t think making another mistake is the answer… If I’m the GM, starting last year at the latest, I’m in full-on youth movement mode and Posey is my starting catcher from some time in the second half of this year until he reaches free agency.

Utter frustration and futility.

Honestly, part of me thinks Sabean says things to justify his actions, then later begins to wholeheartedly believe the justifications because otherwise the cognitive dissonance hurts his head.

I feel prickishly demanding!

I couldn't be prouder of my recent adoptee - Tim Lincecum's dealer. He provides the secret fuel behind both Cy Youngs. Also, he taught Timmy the change-up.

If Posey isn't a ML catcher,

what is Bengie? That fatso can’t even catch a fastball on the outside corner when he knows it’s coming.

Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

Which is pretty funny, because plenty of hitters can hit the outside fastball when they don’t know it’s coming and Todd Wellemeyer is pitching.

FUCK!

shouldn’t Sabean, the Fucking GM, have SOME FUCKING SAY in who plays and who doesn’t? That asshole acts as if he has NO FUCKING INPUT into the situation! Seriously! What a fucking piece of shit! I mean this team can’t fucking hit worth a FUCKING SHIT and Posey CAN help in that department, NO? Fuck YES! If Bork won’t play Posey when he’s called up, then BORK NEEDS TO BE FUCKING FIRED!!!
