Post-game thread: Giants avoid yet another sweep

I went to my first game of the year today. Ask me how that went. And before you blame me for the bad mojo, know that my record is pretty good. My wife's, though, is supernaturally terrible.

Don't worry. It's only temporary. I have an ad up on Craigslist for a new wife. Don't ever tell me that I haven't made sacrifices for this team.

Also of note: that was the most tedious baseball game I think I've ever watched. Cripes.

that steal seemed to distract Sanchez

I think he got mad, and lost his focus. This was the Sanchez of early 2009, who frequently just spun out of control around the fourth inning.

if Freddie Sanchez, Mark DeRosa and Aubrey Huff are the answer, I guess I just didn't understand the question.

by nogooddeed on May 3, 2010 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

It was boring enough to watch at home with some distractions to fill time. I’m sure those at the ballpark struggled to stay awake. (But a series win is still nice.)

My first game of the year last season was a game against the Pirates that was scoreless for nine innings.

it was pretty dull

I noticed the guy was tossing a no-hitter just enough to enjoy the “excitement” when Downs got a hit.

This is where I dislike the managerial skillz of Bochy. He knows Wellemeyer is being skipped his next start, so why did he not use Wellemeyer as his long man today?

Should preface, I did not watch game.

by wilriv21 on May 2, 2010 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s what I thought too. Why Medders? Wellemeyer did end up pitching today. I rarely ever understand what botchy does, and I’ve really given up trying to figure it out.

by Merope on May 2, 2010 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably he knew he’d be pinch hitting in the bottom of the inning, so he didn’t want to make Wellemeyer bat. Instead, he tried to get an out with Medders and then he could go to Wellemeyer.

Unfortunately, Medders foiled that plan by being Brandon Medders.

Things I will lovingly remember about this game once I have distance:

Rowand’s return highlights:
Striking out on a low and away slider in his first AB (didn’t take long to return to form)
Airmailing a throw meant for second base…
Swinging at a slider that hits the plate

Sanchez getting yanked for Medders with 2 outs, who apparently thought he was pitching batting practice.

A strike zone with the consistency of cottage cheese.

Downs making the rookie pitcher and the Giants Offense look like rookies.

The rest I will painstakingly burn out of mind with whiskey and hot pokers.

as much as I love Bowker, so far he’s not given the team anything. He’s not a very good defender, and he’s been struggling at the plate (though the walks are good).

IMO he deserves more time, since I do think he can be a productive hitter. But this team is short on patience with guys like that. That they keep hitting him second is fucking amazing to me. And awesome.

Sarcasm . . . .

. . . as Nero Wolfe once put it, may occasionally raise a bruise, but it never cuts or pierces.

Brian Medders has had, prior to 2010, five years in the majors; four of those five years he pitched quite well—not Hall of fame, but well below league average Quality of Pitching, and the one exception is now a couple of seasons ago (2007). I don’t know that I would run away screaming 42 batters into the season. Keep in mind, too, that his 2010 BABIP (prior to today’s game—worse now) is .419, whereas his career BABIP (including 2010) is .290; there’s some pretty tough luck in there for 2010.

His 2010 K/W rate is also (again, going into today) very healthy, 5:1. His Power factor (TB/H) is almost exactly his career average, a little lower than the current league average.

So: a reliably good pitcher in career terms is, compared to that career, walking fewer, striking out more, yielding no more than usual XBH, and because half a dozen or so extra balls in play have fallen in, he’s a useless bum? Boy, oh, boy, if I were an opposing GM, I’d sure want to trade with guys who believe stuff like that.

The reality is his manager will not be able to trust him and the bullpen will become shorter

by wilriv21 on May 2, 2010 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Hm?

A manager who trusts Eugenio Velez to pinch-hit in crucial situations would not trust Brandon Medders to pitch in long relief? Velez has a continuous history of near-total failure; Medders has a history of near-continuous if modest success. Is even Bork that weird?

BABIP tends to be inflated when one repeatedly serves up fat pitches in the middle of the strike zone. In the major leagues, a poorly located pitch is usually a well-hit one, and no amount of “regression to the mean” is going to save that.

by Solidarity on May 2, 2010 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

But . . .

. . . you have to explain why you think his ability, after five pretty steady years, has very suddenly and very dramatically gone into the dumpster. Such things can and do happen, but almost invariably from physical causes; I, at least, have heard no softest whisper that there is anything physically wrong, so you’re really back to saying “Pfft to five years when I have an awesome 42 current-season BFPs to look at.”

Isn’t that sort of SSS stuff supposed to be one of Bork’s greatest failings? But here it is, being served up on this forum. . . .

isnt the point of allowing players to get rehab starts during their dl time so as to allow them to jump right back into the action?

why did the org allow rowand to use this as his rehab game?

and when are they gonna send the durty one to a sports shrink?

and how many times is medders gonna be brought into a 1 run game before bochy figures out that is not his forte’?

and when is the org gonna start working with the pitchers on holding runners on? (not that it would matter with a kid like ey jr….who is better than his dad at almost everything)

i wonder if they are gonna finish the season leading the league in hitting dingers with no one on….

I don’t think that bondslegend phrased his argument very well, but it’s way different. Complaining about use of the word when it is used in a historically accurate fashion for a historical drama is censorship. It’s not much different from banning “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” for using the n-word. Add to that the fact that the “j-word” has become more or less antiquated in our culture except when referring to a different sort of racial epithet, and that is the stereotype of the “Jewish American Princess.” The hate that still exists behind the n-word and the c-word are still very real, and for the most part are used in a modern, not a historical, context.

Ishikawa, Velez, and Medders all look like likely trade bait for the Giants, simply because they have no value to this club. Ishikawa’s defense and Velez’s athleticism could be valuable to other clubs, and all three might benefit from a change of scenery. However, if we traded all three they’d probably be worth a case of Budweiser and a gift certificate for The Olive Garden.

I was pondering this, brining up Posey then flipping Bengie if he is having a good season.

However I do not see Sabes trading his and Bork’s golden boy if we are sniffing playoffs. Especially as he will no doubt be “a reason for us being in contention”.

As long as Lincecum likes to throw to him

Molina stays. Frankly he’s having a good year right now. And he deserves credit for being more selective. He obviously is trying to curb his tendency to swing at anything close to the strike zone.

Bengie generally has a strong April: he plays hard, and wants very badly to make a difference. However, given his age and body type, he does not handle everyday duties well over the course of the season, and since coming to San Francisco has generally slumped in the summer months.

The way he’s playing right now, he’s not really hurting the team much relative to the value Posey could provide. Over the course of the season, he will. Play him regularly until June, transition in Posey so Molina stays fresh, and deal him in July if the right deal comes around.

I know, I know – no reason to have any faith in Sabes. But I wouldn’t find him flipping Molina for a decent prospect or two if the scouting arm of the FO can be pushy enough about someone they like.

BABIP has always confused me
Bowker is suffering from the second-lowest BABIP

Doesn’t this indicate that he’s just not getting good hits, versus just bad luck? Of course if someone is not making solid contact and driving the ball their BABIP will go down. Is it true that everyone’s BABIP must be near the mean, or don’t some players just suck? I don’t know too much about BABIP, but is it usually near the same level for every player regardless?

Not saying Bowker sucks, so don’t kill me.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

by KTJ on May 3, 2010 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I’d like someone statistically savvy to help me answer this, but my understanding is that BABIP, except in the extreme cases, doesn’t tell you a lot. You have to measure it against the player’s career BABIP (which can differ between players) as well as things like Line Drive rates.

by rotorueter on May 3, 2010 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m not really statistically savvy, but I’d basically agree with this – except I’d add that, beyond a certain range, BABIP is almost certainly flukey. No hitter ever in history is going to maintain a .500 BABIP, for example.

yes

what I always do (with pitchers and hitters) is take their current BABIP in concert with their career number. Because it’s very unlikely that someone will just totally change overnight.

And then there’s Pablo and Ichiro, who both have super high BABIPs. They’re just freaks of nature

BABIP can indicate luck, or it can indicate, as you say, being overmatched. If you have a good LD% (line drive percentage) but a low BABIP, that’s a good indication you’ve been unlucky.

In Bowker’s case, his BABIP is 91 points lower than than Aaron Rowand’s, but Bowker has a higher LD% (21.6% vs. 16.7%). That would seem to indicate some combination of bad luck from Bowker and/or good luck from Rowand.

I did it yesterday. I like Schierholtz and want him to succeed, but I also acknowledge that his high BABIP was a large factor in his success so far.

He needs more power going forward in addition to his nicely expanded walk total to perpetuate the success once his luck on balls in play dips.

Like most stats

you can’t use it alone and have it tell the whole story, you need to use it with other stats to get a bigger picture.

I’m not exactly bill james, but with BABIP I’ve always thought it was smart to use it with LD %, since that tells you if a guy’s hitting the ball hard, it’s just heading straight at fielders (also known as “Ryan Garko syndrome”)

So for example, Bowker’s BABPIP is .250, but his LD% is 21.6. By comparison, Albert Pujols’ career LD% is 19.5 (not comparing the two, but just showing that Bowker is, indeed, hitting the ball well, it’s just not to the gaps…yet).

Basically, we can expect, given playing time, that Bowker’s numbers will improve, since his low BABIP and high LD% point to him being somewhat unlucky.

If you don’t have LD% numbers handy, most people accept a BABIP of around .300 as “average.” And while everyone’s career numbers vary, I believe there is the perception that given a large enough sample size, BABIP will even out for a player unless they are consistently making poor, or excellent, contact.

You have to say Madbum. He’ll trade Madbum for a bat, and I don’t mean Carl Crawford. I mean, like, David Ortiz or someone. That’s been Sabean’s pattern: draft pitching, trade it for veterans. Hey, two outta three against a team predicted to win its division is nothing to scoff at. And after this week, the Giants can say that about all three of them.

But of course they lost three annoying, aggravating, heartbreaking attempts at the sweep. They’re the Giants. We wouldn’t recognize them if they came through in the clutch.

Lack of a killer instinct

Giants seem satisfied to win first series. Today was just a shitty effort. Rowand understandably rusty. But I have to say – how often is Torres in the middle of good things happening. I think he needs to be in the lineup right now.

Bowker had a truly shitty at bat when he struck out on a 3-2 pitch that was about 2 feet high. Ishikawa is useless to this team. Huff has been decent on defense and you dojn’t keep a guy around to be a late inning defensive replacement at !B. Time for him to go.I suspect him to go down when and if Freddie Sanchez comes back. I’m waiting to read about the inevitable setback and Freddie out till June.

Very disapointing to see J. Sanchez take a giant step backwards today. If he ever pulls his head out of his ass, he is going to be really good. Cause he rarely gets hit.

Still an excellent homestand. They now need to prove that they can beat decent teams on the road. 3-3 is fine.

So here is yet another reason Byrnes sucks. Also this should fall under the "not a good soldier" umbrella
I’ll get back to Lee in-depth soon enough, but first I have to address Eric Byrnes’ at-bat in the 11th inning. Now, I don’t want to overreact and get all hyperbolic, but this may have been the worst at-bat in major league history. I’m serious. Seattle had the bases loaded and one out, and Byrnes violated an absolute cardinal rule by actually pulling his bat back on a squeeze bunt. No, really, he did. Players are taught from youth ball that on a squeeze, you have to do whatever you can to get the bat on the ball. Throw your bat, throw your body, but get the bat on the ball to protect the runner. Instead, Byrnes put his bat out to bunt and then pulled it back, hanging Ichiro Suzuki out to dry for a caught stealing at the plate.

How inexplicable was all this? Texas manager Ron Washington got ejected for arguing that the pitch should have been a strike because Byrnes had bunted at the ball. When home plate umpire Jim Wolf informed him that Byrnes pulled the bat back, Washington refused to believe it, saying he had never seen such a thing in all his years in baseball — that he could not even fathom such a thing! — and continued to argue. It was only when watching the replay later that Washington realized he was wrong, that Byrnes had indeed pulled the bat back.

Byrnes capped off the dreadful at-bat by looking at Strike 3 to end the inning, accounting for two outs without ever leaving the batter’s box, which generally is not easy to do. And if all that sounds incredible, how about this? Byrnes left the clubhouse quickly after the game, riding his bike in the hallway past reporters and general manager Jack Zduriencik, looking more like a bike messenger than a major leaguer. Which he may not be soon, given that he is also hitting .107.

Oh, huh, THAT’S what happened. I remember checking an update of the game and seeing Ichiro had been thrown out trying to steal home – I hadn’t realized it was a botched squeeze play.

by the way

Grant’s mention of this being the most tedious game he ever attended reminded me of the Giants-Pirates doubleheader I’ve went to in 1996. The first game was probably my most tedious game – Giants go down 4-0 right away, get 10 hits, only score 1. At no point was the game remotely interesting.

The second game was more memorable, in the want-to-smash-my-head-into-a-brick-wall sort of way. 11-9 loss in 10 innings. The Giants were down 4 going into the bottom of the 9th, then clawed back to tie the game. And then gave up 6 runs in the top of the 10th. One of those runs scored on an HBP with the bases loaded. And then they mounted another miracle comeback in the bottom of the 10th – but the game ended with them still down two runs.

Aaaaaaanyway. Here’s the box score:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN199609152.shtml

Scroll down to the play-by-play account, and check out the final out of the game. That’s why I’m telling this whole story: therein, you’ll find the origin story of one of the character traits I’m best known for on MCC.

Also of note: that was the most tedious baseball game I think I’ve ever watched. Cripes.

Yes. It was also my first game of the season. It fucking sucked.

A woman two seats over started breastfeeding her son (?) right when Huff hit the HR. It was awesome…in a way. Hopefully she’ll start RALLY BREASTFEEDING by the the fifth inning next time.

John Bowker

I’m sure this has been mentioned before (sorry, been absent), but is anyone else staggered that they keep not only starting bowker, but hitting him second? Are they actually…..GIVING HIM A CHANCE? Or is this just until Rent inevitably comes back?

i think they’re just trying something new and attempting to get the offense going somehow, by getting someone on base… does bowker get on base much? i would have batted Nate 2nd

Last 3 games batting 2nd for Bowker

2-7, 2 BB, 2 K’s, 1 SF. Not bad.
Also, apparently Xanthan is the official sponsor of Bowker. Interesting.

exactly. I like how he’s looked the past couple days, but he just needs more chances so we can escape the SSS zone.

well he's not gonna get it

Unless they put Derosa at 2nd and just leave Bowker in the outfield with Nate and Rowand… plus have Uribe and Rent share SS… or have Uribe and Derosa go for 2nd

I think it at least makes Bochy think about giving Rent a little more rest.

That's never stopped them before, though

I’m pretty sure they would never have put Bowker 2nd before. Because it makes sense.

lol

I don’t think Rowand “should” be hitting leadoff. He should be 8th. But they’re going to keep him there because they’re fucking morons.

OT: Kid Getting Nailed.

Yesterday was my fourth game this year (both weekend Atlanta games and both games this weekend) and let me echo the sentiments that holy crap that game was boring. Luckily, we had a bunch of drunken idiots next to us in the bleachers to [somewhat] entertain us.

Now to the official OT…I’m not sure if they showed this on TV or not, but the jumbotron showed this a couple of times…did anybody else see the kid who who was walking outside the park get nailed by Huff’s home run ball in the chest? Also, am I an asshole for laughing at it?
