Funny (if pointless story): I recently learned I've been to West Virginia. I thought I hadn't, but it turned out a camping trip I took as a kid that I thought was in Virginia was actually in West Virginia. On the other hand, I figured out I've never been to Kansas - I thought I-80 (which my family rove the length of twice while moving across the country) d through the state, but it doesn't.

Anyway, at the link, you can make a map of which states you've visited. Because I'm a geography nerd, I thought it would be interesting to see who's been where.q`1

Here's my map

I’ve sorta-kinda been to Idaho, but I didn’t count it: I was on a train that went through the skinny part of the state, but it was in the middle of the night and I was asleep the whole time.

You have to save the map and upload it to your own server or photo sharing site, by the way. Linking to it on their server doesn’t work.

As far as I’m concerned, the world ends past Ohio.

Side OT, OT:

Some of my favorite states: OH (Columbus — omg SCHMIDTS! — is a cool town and I spent a lot of time in Athens. Cleveland is a deathtrap), Maryland (Hagerstown, Frederick, some neat places), CA (SF is nice).

Ask me about my blog.

some of my favorite states

California – duh
Washington – Seattle’s an awesome city and the San Juan Islands are gorgeous.
Montana – my dad’s home state. Glacier Park is breathtaking.
New York – Just for New York City, really. Nothing against the rest of the state, but I haven’t spent much time elsewhere. Well, I did go to Cooperstown once. That was cool.
Louisiana – Again, really just for New Orleans.
New Mexico – I’ve only been once, but it was real purdy. And lots of good food in Santa Fe.

I’ve hardly been to most of your favorite states. I’ve only been through Ohio by car and train, just the camping trip for WV, and I’ve been through Virginia several times but haven’t spent much time there. I have visited Baltimore a few times – fans of The Wire might be surprised to learn that parts of it are really pretty and quite nice.

The Inner Harbor is cool.

I also really like Washington D.C., particularly the DuPont Circle area. It’s got the Brickskeller which is always a must-stop if I’m in town. Also, all the free museums and stuff. The Holocaust Museum knocked me on my ass. Powerful place that I’m glad I went to.

would be cool if you could color code it, like, one color for states where you’ve lived, one for states where you’ve spent the night, one for states you’ve spent time in but not spent the night (that wouldn’t be very many), and one for places you’ve driven through.

I’m told that I live within a 6-hour driving distance of New Orleans. It’s been decades, and I still have absolutely no interest in seeing Nawlins, nor any part of LA for that matter.

I was briefly tempted to make a road trip to Shreveport when the Giants’ AA team was there, but never followed through.

Not bad considering I’m only 19. Moving from NJ to CA when I was 9 helped though; got a lot of those eastern states before the move then a bunch of western states after. Visiting all the ballparks added a bunch too.

I was thinking you live in GA; is that right?

I’m a huge Matt Downs fan. Birmingham, I presume? Memphis here.

I’m from the Birmingham metro area, but I live and work in Tuscaloosa these days. I’ve been to Memphis. It’s a cool town. First place I ever saw the Mississippi River.

I can’t think of a team that I’ve followed in the last several decades that has benefitted more, despite their best efforts otherwise, from the Disabled List than your San Francisco Giants under Brian Sabean.

I think I’d modify the old HeeHaw line to “if it weren’t for the DL, I’d have no luck at all.”

Most of the 24 states I’ve seen were as a result of a bus tour my Grandad paid for decades ago in the summer when I was in high school (don’t know if they still have those tours). It was fun but awkward, as I didn’t know any of the other kids from southern Ca. where it started, I was in this area.

It went through AZ, NM, then the deep south, missing Florida and up the eastern seaboard to NY. NYC was the high point, visiting the 1965 Worlds Fair, catching Hello Dolly on Broadway, and of course, climbing the Statue of Liberty. After that it was Philly, Detroit, Chicago (wished I could have seen Wrigley Field), Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone.

I googled it

No, the internet says it was founded in 1974 in SF. So that was 9 years after my jaunt, plus it wasn’t a sleeper coach.

The last stop was in Salt Lake City, but the hotel had booked our reservation with some other party. We had to sleep on a high school or college basketball court. They handed out sleeping bags, with boys and girls separated on one end of it. The level of hormones present resulted in some teasing banter before we nodded out.

And I think all I’ve added since I was 23 is New Mexico.
