Bengie Molina - at it again:

Bengie Is Dead Nuts Right On.

The ESPN coverage of this in the context of not covering what Schierholtz did was in fact ridiculous.

Regardless of the coverage

It’s ESPN. You may want to research the first letter of that acronym.

And by writing this article, he’s really making the issue about HIM, regardless of his throwaway comment about Nate and Matty.

I agree the lack of coverage is frustrating, but I think that’s different from whether or not the slow-motion highlight was mean or funny or whatever it was. For me, I didn’t find it that bad. I have no problem with a silly sports network making fun of professional athletes occasionally.

I’m not gonna bag on Molina for his blog post. I can see why he’d write it. Personally, I thought the clip was funny (I R 5), but I wasn’t the one being mocked.

One quibble, though: he HAS taken issue with reporters writing about him being the slowest guy (he writes: “Look, you can say I’m the slowest guy in baseball or in all of sports or in the entire world. I don’t take issue with that because I AM the slowest guy. I have always been the slowest guy. I can’t challenge that criticism.” His freeze-out of an Angels beat writer for pointing this out is well known).

I’m not any great fan of Bengie’s, and I’d be quite happy if he wasn’t on the team right now, but he’s right and ESPN is full of dicks. There are plenty of Youtube clips with fat guys running, I’m sure, and ESPN’s job is to cover sports. If we want to see fat guys running slowly, we could probably find that pretty easily; we go to ESPN for “analysis” and coverage of the Yankees and Red Sox.

Goodbye, Steven Johnson, we hardly knew ye. Seriously, that was short.

His post was very well written.

When he says things he, often comes across as whiny or saying things in the heat of the moment, but when he writes, he’s a lot more personable. I can completely understand what he was saying. If ESPN wants to be the “Leader in Sports”, they should show actual highlights of games, not make potshots. I realize that it’s sports and you can’t get around the fact that there will be some fan-style heckling, but ESPN should be better than that.

Of course I say should but I realize they never fucking will be. I’m glad I watch MLB Network for baseball news.

Molina is an adult and should realize that ESPN is not straight journalism. Its entertainment journalism akin to what TMZ is to other celebrities. Quit your bitching. This is why you get paid millions of dollars. Your ego has much more to do with this than your mother. If you feel this is unfair feel free to quit, turn in the millions of dollars you are being paid. This is what the freaking job of being in famous is about. Listen to every famous person ever IT SUCKS. People make fun of you. Though if you are going to leave please make a call to Fresno so we can have whatever chump catcher is down there called up. Bengie, this is old news. Everyone has moved on from it.

You do not see Dennis Eckersley write a blog post everytime ESPN shows the no legged corpse of Kirk Gibson hit a HR off him.

And serious. You play off the fact that you are slow and possibly the slowest guy in the league barely weeks after you complained that you did not get a better contract in the offseason, citing all your “positive qualities”.

Did it ever occur that maybe you being the slowest player in the league who has trouble scoring from 3RD on deep hit balls was a factor in people not wanting you?

Also the love fest for Bengie in the comments section is a little crazy. There is only one person who had a negative post. The rest were MORAL OUTRAGE AT THOSE BAD MEN AT ESPN. Even the negative guy was a little off his rocker though:

No sir…no, no, no. I can’t give you a pass on this one.
You’re not “slow.” You’re overweight. This is not disrespectful name-calling. It’s the truth. By any medical standards, you’re obese.
I do respect your heart, your contribution, your career. But it makes me angry to see you step to the plate. I run 20 miles a week to work off the $9 beer I buy at the park to pay your salary.
So which speech resonates?
How about the “you get paid a lot of money to do nothing but exercise” speech?
How about the “obesity is a national epidemic, and you’re a role model” speech?
How about the “you have the best facilities, best trainers, best nutrition, best information around you at all times” speech?
There’s no excuse for it. You’re disrespecting us. We hope and fantasize and cheer and…pay…and every day you come to a game having not taken the best care of yourself, you’re giving us less than we’re paying for…and cheating us.
Lose 40 lbs by the All-Star Break and we’ll win the pennant. Fact. Maybe coach some kids on fitness and nutrition while you’re at it.
Don’t hate ESPN. They were only calling out something rather ridiculous. No professional athlete should be out of shape. Get on it, Bengie. It’s not disrespect to you…it’s disrespect to the fat…on you…on any other athlete or coach…on a police officer or firefighter…and on our own damn selves. Get on it. Make it happen.

After watching the video of the espn clip

I think Bengie needs to calm down a little, its something that he would have been way better off just ignoring. The “slow clap for effort” comment was a little out of line, but not something to get this worked up about. (video)

That said, he hits the nail right on the head about ESPN’s supposed sports coverage. The entire highlight was bengie running, with only a quick mention of Cain’s pitching performance. Just another example in a long line of crap reporting I’ve seen from them. After not having cable for awhile now, I realize how little I miss that network, most of the stuff on there is utter garbage. wake up sports world: ESPN blows.

I don’t see anything wrong with that clip. There was nothing personal about what ESPN did- it would be one thing of they made fun of him about something in his personal life (making a joke about his wife, kids, etc.), but they didn’t. They made fun of Bengie Molina’s speed, which is nothing personal. In actuality it is a baseball skill, so ESPN has every right to make fun of him about it. If a player sucks at hitting, ESPN along with all sports fans have every right to make jokes about it. If someone consistently takes laughable routes to catch flyballs (I’m looking at you, Adam Dunn) ESPN and fans everywhere have the right to scrutinize his fielding ability. How is this situation any different. Speed and baserunning is a baseball skill, and should be treated as such. If you don’t want to be made fun of about it Bengie, why don’t you lose 40 pounds?
I remember last year I sat in the bleachers for a Giants-Astros game. For the first few innings of the game we were all ragging Carlos Lee for being fat. At one point, he turned around, stuck his belly out as far as he could, and started rubbing his stomach. We all laughed about it and everybody moved on. But I’ve always wondered how Bengie would react to a situation like this. I don’t think catchers have to deal with hecklers all that much, so it’s hard to say. But I have this weird vision of us in the series against the Sox at Fenway, and 38,000 rowdy Bostonians are chanting “FATTY” during a Bengie at-bat. I bet Bengie would have a big 0-fer during that series haha
