K Law also thinks Sabean is stupid.
Refreshing to hear him rip Sabean on national air waves, even if it was at 11 PM pacific on a weeknight.

Well, I think your stupid but I didn't say it.
Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

Isn't there a difference between "Think" and "Say?"
I thought it was clear from the conversation that he had a low opinion of Sabean, and his mockery of him as the interview ended seemed to be telling.
I disagree with your misleading subject line.

But how do you know that he thinks that if he doesn’t say it? He may imply that he is stupid but that doesn’t mean he thinks it too.

By ones actions.
Most people lie most of the time so that they can keep their actual thoughts private. The things people say do not always correlate with what they think.
No?

You missed the jokes about all AAA pitching being suck?
It’s one thing to do that in this forum and something else on national radio.

So you’re putting marks against him because a dysfunctional organization, headed by a complete psycho, fired him? I have my complaints with Law, but he’s extremely knowledgeable and usually right.

No, not commenting on his knowledge, only the size of the man’s ego, which puts me off. I agree with you that he’s tremendously knowledgeable, but he’s arrogant a hell.

And that’s one of my main complaints. Although, it often leads to hilarity when he rips into someone.

That was a SEVEN year $126M contract. See, it’s like the Howard contract, but then we get two extra years of Zito for $500,000 a pop! Great deal!
Goodbye, Steven Johnson, we hardly knew ye. Seriously, that was short.

Zito will have been worth more WAR over the course of his contract than Howard (whose deal, remember, doesn’t even start for another 2 years)

Every single night the same arrangement, GRM signs in to fight the fight. Still, he always feels a strange estrangement. No one here real, no one here is right – but him. He’s been making posts, plus-ones the most, hoping no one will will notice that he’s going through the motions, walking through the part. Capping words with half his heart (in it).
He was always brave and kind of righteous, calling out your biases. But if you’ll crawl out of your mother’s basement you’ll see it doesn’t mean a thing. The horseshits that he flings. But only I am noticing…..

K Law’s snarky responses makes reading his weekly chat on ESPN very entertaining. He is pretty insightful when evaluating players, though he was wrong on Lincecum.
That’s why they call it "scouting" instead of "watching".

The coast is clear
At this point I think it is pretty safe to say that Brian Slobbean, is in fact, not very smart…You may have people debate the level of stupidity he posesses, but I don’t think anybody is going around saying “Brian Sabean is such a smart, smart guy!”
The guy still has a job because the P and L is in the black, not because of what is between his ears…

I don't get the outrage
Keith Law didn’t call Sabean and idiot, he clearly said that Sabean’s over the top comments were a smokescreen for service time motivations. Which is probably true.
Well, maybe he called him an idiot far promoting Posey last season and not playing him (also true, IMO).
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
True
But he also laughed at him and derided him for his comments re: AAA
Adopted Nut: Paraparaumu, New Zealand native, Andy Skeels
Sure, after pointing out that those comments were too ridiculous to be anything but a smokescreen.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
True, but then they spent the last 15 seconds riffing on it again talking about going to see Strasburg pitch in Syracuse…

I think I need to lay off the acid…
I thought we were discussing whether Law called Sabean (or at least strongly suggested that he considered him) an idiot.
Adopted Nut: Paraparaumu, New Zealand native, Andy Skeels
He’s calling the comments stupid and Sabean deceptive. That does not mean that Sabean was stupid, just that that comments themselves were (and purposely so). If anything, he’s calling Sabean a liar (albiet a justified one) and making fun of his patently ridiculous fib.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
Do you think Law thinks Sabean is an idiot? Do you think he is an idiot?
Adopted Nut: Paraparaumu, New Zealand native, Andy Skeels
I already thought Sabean was an idiot, so anything I draw from Law’s comments it likely going to be confirmation bias.
I don’t think Law has a high opinion of Sabean, no. But Law didn’t call him an idiot in this interview.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
Bhaakon I appreciate your argument but,
He degraded his entire AAA team which houses two of his best prospects because he couldn’t come up with a better smokescreen. THat is stupid anyway you turn it.
1. Brian Sabean couldn’t come up with a smokescreen for keeping Posey in the minors better than “Triple A is crap baseball”.
2. Bengie Molina, the current everyday catcher, is hitting .345/.390/.491 so far this year.
THEREFORE
3. Brian Sabean is a bag of stupid.
Goodbye, Steven Johnson, we hardly knew ye. Seriously, that was short.
Wasn’t this during Molina’s little injury saga in New York? If so, then “we like what we’ve got” wouldn’t have flown. Maybe it was before, I don’t remember. There’s also the argument to move Posey to another position (one that the Giants appeared to have bought into, given the spring training first base experiment)
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO

What I Think Sabean Ment
In the Pacific Coast League there are a lot of AAAA pitchers. They are not the majority but they are a significant minority. Therefore one can not just look at a hitters stats. One has to know which pitchers the good stats were accumulated against and how well they were pitching when the good stats were accumulated. To do this one has to have a lot of different eyes watching a lot of different games to see what is real.
What You Don't Get
We all know exactly what he meant. But he said it in about the douchiest way possible.
Juan "Doesn't Cheat The Game" Perez, please keep hitting.

The Giants Way™"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
Bah, reply fail. So that was your quote and I'm asking:
So, there’s a significant minority of pitchers that are better than the rest?
The Giants Way™"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
That Is Not What AAAA Means To Me
It means they have been around and bounced around between the majors and minors and could not stay in the majors because there are holes in their games they just can’t figure out how to fix. The balance of AAA is made up of real prospects and a few younger organizational players that are likely at best to join the AAAAers.
by giantsrainman on May 12, 2010 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions
I've got to go with GRM.
When someone says “AAAA” player to me, they really mean “Terminal AAA player,” a guy who plays well enough in the high minors but would be a fringe bench player in the majors. I suspect that this is the majority of AAA players, with only a minority being true “prospects.”
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
AAAA means better than most AAA players but still not good enough for the majors.
