Headed to Modesto to watch the Little Giants take on the Nuts
(twss)
Anyone interested in half-assed first-hand scouting reports on any particular players? Surkamp's starting for SJG, apparently.

I’ll be listening in, my newest summer son tells me he may be pitching tonight depending on how the game goes.

I’m angling to get him for an interview soon for MiLB.com. Wanna know if he’s for real like Thomas Neal.

Hmm...
I have to drive to Modesto after work tonight to pick up my dad for the home opener… we might have to make a pit stop at John Thurman Field on the way out of town.
Adopted brother of Jason Jarvis. To pass the time during the offseason I decided to try my hand at blogging about photography and music.
I'll (probably) be at the game on Saturday

My mini-half-assed scouting report
Nuts win ugly, 4-2.
Play on both sides was sloppy — nerves and greenness, I imagine. The most amusing play came in the top of the 3rd. Runners on 1B and 3B i think, and Peguero smashes a single to Wheeler in center. Runner on 3B freezes, and Wheeler makes a wild throw home that goes to the backstop. Runner on 3B heads toward home, and the Nuts pitcher is so disgusted by the throw that he turns around and starts walking back toward the mound instead of trying to field a throw from the C who has recovered the ball. It’s not likely the runner would’ve been out anyway, but it looked bush.
Surkamp looked good. No gun at Modesto (which is a shithole, btw), but he seemed to be mixing fastballs and changeups (?), always around the plate, mostly keeping hitters off-balance. Really only 1 of the 2 runs charged to him should be considered earned — the 2nd run scored because Simmons lost a pop-up in the high sky that resulted in a double.
Adrianza is fast! His single was actually struck much better than his double — the latter was a flip job over the head of 1B and into shallow right. His single was hit on the screws down the RF line and the RF got to it in a hurry — no chance to stretch it, altho he took a wide turn.
Peguero didn’t really distinguish himself at the plate or in the field. He’s built strangely — kinda lanky but with junk in trunk. Looks like he’s gonna need to spend some time in the weight room if he’s gonna make it to the Show.
Tim Wheeler made a wacky throw (see above) and absolutely CRUSHED a high fastball over the right field wall. 6-4 and lanky, with decent speed. I guess some scouts say there’s a hitch in his swing, but I don’t know enough to be able to comment. But if you make a mistake up, he can absolutely take you out.
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
