Ok, yay!, Opening Day is over. I'm very happy to see the Giants enter the season ready to play. The spring training record means nothing, but at least it's clear they are ready to play. Last year they had those ridiculous batting orders and it's easy to see that even though this lineup doesn't compare favorably with teams like the Phillies, Braves, Cardinals, etc., at least this is now a lineup that can be productive.
Anyway, I'm reading this interview with Billy Beane and two things cross my mind - 1) Rajai Davis > Eugenio Velez, and, 2) If Fred Lewis goes anywhere else, I hope he goes to the A's, where he probably belongs.
Now, ideally, I think we all wish for a situation where Fred Lewis takes LF, Bowker stays in right, Schierholtz spells both guys, and Mark DeRosa plays every position he can.
But, realistically, at least we have Bowker being productive in the lineup. He looks like he might actually develop! And Fred "darn that bunion" Lewis might have just a bench role, which Bochy reserves for defensive replacements like Ishikawa and Schierholtz.
So I think it's inevitable for Fred Lewis to leave for one of two teams: the Padres and the A's. I hope it's the A's, because I can see them using him for what he's worth. And I'd really rather not have him in the division playing against the Giants.
