Just so we get this straight - Beane non-tendered Cust in December, re-signed him for $2.65M three weeks later, and now DFA'd him before the season began. That's ridiculous.

Wut.

Does a $2.65 mil Cust have any trade value at all?

Rooting for Jose Casilla to take his K- and GB-inducing skills to the majors and join his brother.

The Kids: Lewis, Posey, Sandoval, Bowker, Schierholtz, Frandsen, Ishikawa, Amezaga... CHONE WAR projection= 12.7

Correction: according to Yahoo, if Cust refuses to be assigned to AAA, the A’s won’t owe him any money. Don’t know why.

So this might end up not costing them anything.

Insane because of his defense at 1st?

The Nats were able to sort of hide Adam Dunn’s defense at 1st so if we treat Cust like a poor man’s Adam Dunn than I’d be ok with him playing 1B. Plus I think Cust offers more upside offensively than Huff.

Insane Because Huff Is Likely To Be The Better Hitter Too.

The Nationals are actually being stupid with Adam Dunn. He is an even worse defensive 1B then he is a defensive OFer. The only role that makes sense for Dunn is DH. A NL team spending money on Adam Dunn is an NL team being dumb. In Cust’s case the A’s have concluded that he doesn’t hit well enough anymore to waste a roster spot playing him at DH either.

by giantsrainman on Apr 4, 2010 12:12 AM PDT up reply actions

I didn't know that about Dunn

but I’ll take your word for it because you are more knowledgable about SaberStats than I am. That said I actually think you may be right. Maybe it’s just perception but I didn’t realize Cust had been so bad recently. But the last 3 years his OPS has dropped significantly.

07-.912
08-.851
09-.773

While Huff seemed to drop off a cliff. I guess the question is do you expect Huff to have another sub .700 OPS season or you willing to bet that Cust won’t decline to the point where he won’t have a sub .700 OPS. I guess it’s a moot point because I can’t see the Giants FO taking a flier on Cust but I think you may have convinced me.

Non Tendor Doesn't Start Free Agency Years

It does make you a free agent but once you sign you return to being controlled by your arbitration calander if you do not yet have six plus years of MLB service. If the A’s had not DFAed Cust for example he would still be under their control next year as his final year of arbitration. This is also what happened with Brandon Medders. Medders too had been non tendored and signed as a Free Agent but now he is under the Giants control and just had his first year of arbitration with three more to come.

Beane was the first to spot the market undervaluing OBP, and now that it’s properly valued he can’t afford to play that game anymore. He just hasn’t found another soft spot in the market that he can exploit (on the cheap) well enough to thrive. Oh, and their drafts for position players have sucked, and he’s made quite a few poor trades.

That's true, to a point

But though defense appears to be slightly undervalued in the marketplace, look at the payroll of the Mariners and Red Sox compared to the A’s. Even if Beane had contemporaneously identified this same market imperfection, he’d never have been able to compete for free agents with the Red Sox.

None of which excuses this whole Jack Cust debacle. Assuming no one claims off waivers (which seems like a safe bet), will they actually be able to send him to the minors, or does he become a free agent? If the latter, it just looks like a mountain of fail.

I have this little belief (whether it’s true or not, I don’t know) that J.P. Ricciardi carbon-copied most of his roster construction from Beane, first with the “Moneyball” type of hitters, then with defense.

I don’t really follow the A’s, so I can’t confidently say if he’s mediocre or not. It definitely looks like the league has caught up to him, but generally, it still seems to me that he does more good moves than bad ones. But he now has two well-run teams in his division, with a payroll about $40M higher than his – even vintage Beane would have had a hard time dealing with that.

The "Logic" Of The Great Sabertist Beane
In explaining the move, general manager Billy Beane pointed to Cust’s inability to get going this spring (he hit .216 with one homer, three RBIs and 20 strikeouts in 51 at-bats). Beane said that the team wants to see what Chavez can do as full-time DH, and both of them are left-handed hitters.

I don’t know, Cook, I wouldn’t have said it with as much gloating as GRM, but it certainly does appear that Beane would get a lot more leeway than Sabean for similar moves. It would be inconceivable to me to have no personal biases in this, which is why I always distrust claims of objectivity. Humans can’t be objective. Even if the data is objective, the choice of parameter, the choice of which data to gather, not even going into how the data is presented and then analyzed … Personally, I’d find it more trustworthy to discover and admit biases rather than to deny having them. Not that I’m directing this at you personally, or even in this Beane move, but honestly, how many here are completely dispassionate about either Sabean or Beane? Wouldn’t the fury at one or the esteem of the other POSSIBLY affect how people write about and react to bonehead maneuvers?

The A’s could do anything this year – they’re an extreme high risk-high reward team.

I mean, look at their rotation: Anderson/Sheets/Duchscherer/Cahill/Gonzales – that might be the most talented rotation in the AL. Anderson is a beast who’s just good at everything, Sheets is one of the best pitchers in the majors when he’s healthy, Duchscherer is a very good pitcher, Cahill is just a year removed from being one the best pitching prospects in baseball, and Gonzales is a Jonathan Sanchez clone. If things work out, that’s the best rotation in the AL.

On the other hand, 22 y-o pitchers are unpredictable, Sheets and Duchscherer pitched a collective 0 MLB innings last year, Cahill simply looked like he’s not ready for the majors, and Gonzales is a Jonathan Sanchez clone. There isn’t a single pitcher here who could really be trusted to have a good season, and if things don’t work out, it could get very, very ugly.

They definitely look like they can become a good team soon, but I don’t know if they’ll be able to compete with the Angles and Mariners.

Cust is pissed

“I think it’s messed up,” Cust said in a phone interview with The Chronicle after leaving the stadium. "They’re going to go on 50 at-bats after three years of what I’ve done here? It’s ridiculous. A lot of other guys have had bad springs. This is a joke.

“The fact is, this team has no power and they’ve just released a guy who (averaged 28 homers) the last three years. That’s amazing.”
“I’ve busted my butt for them for three years, and I played sporadically this spring and they leave it until the day before the regular season to do this, like they didn’t know what was going on before?” Cust said. “And with Coco [Crisp] on the DL — I’m not good enough to be one of the 25 guys?”

Yeah, but some other GM who might be tempted to give him a contract might be. “Oh, that’s the guy who whines, plays bad defense, and doesn’t hit like a superstar. We don’t need that jerk on our team.”

I don't know about that, to the groin.
