minor lines, 4/29/10
Thursday highlights from the Giants' farm: Ryan Rohlinger homered while reaching base three times, and Brandon Belt extended his hitting streak while reaching base four times.
AAA: Fresno defeated Sacramento 5-4
Fresno: SS-3B Ryan Rohlinger: 2 for 4, HR, BB, SO, GiDP
Fresno: C Buster Posey: 1 for 4, BB, SO
Fresno: RF Joe Borchard: 2 for 4, HR, 2 SO
Sacramento: 1B Chris Carter: 1 for 3, BB, SO
Sacramento: DH Jack Cust: 1 for 1, HR, 3 BB
Fresno: SP Joe Martinez: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 3 K--2 HR
Fresno: RP Denny Bautista: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Sacramento: SP Vin Mazzaro: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 6 K--1 HR--2 HB
Rohlinger and Borchard were two of the four Grizzlies with two hits each. Borchard had his 4th HR, and Rohlinger his 1st HR. Posey also reached base twice. The A's top prospect Carter had his 5th HR. Cust, who is perhaps the highest paid player in the PCL, had his 4th HR and reached base safely in all four plate appearances.
Both starting pitchers struggled to find the strike zone, combining for eleven free passes. Martinez threw 51 of 98 pitches for strikes, and Mazzaro threw 56 of 103 pitches for strikes. Mazaro, who made 17 starts in the majors last year, has a 2.59 ERA so far this year. Martinez's ERA is now 3.60. Bautista pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 4th save.
AA: Richmond had its second scheduled off-day this year
(Its next scheduled off-day is May 17.)
A+: San Jose defeated Modesto 5-1
San Jose: 1B Brandon Belt: 2 for 2, 2B, 2 BB, CS
San Jose: C Johnny Monell: 2 for 4, 2B
San Jose: 2B Charlie Culberson: 2 for 4, 2B
San Jose: SP Craig Westcott: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K--1 HB
Belt extended his hitting streak while reaching base in all four plate appearances. I think the hitting streak is now at sixteen games. He raised his AVG to .433. Among three other Giants with two hits each, Culberson had his 6th double, and Monell his 3rd double. Hitting just .172, most of Culberson's hits have gone for extra bases as he has just three singles among his ten hits.
Westcott had his second straight start allowing just two hits but also issued a season-high three walks. Last year's 30th round pick has yet to allow a run this year in 18.0 IP over his four starts.
A-: Augusta lost to Hagerstwon 6-4
(allowing five runs in the 7th and 8th innings)
Augusta: RF Daniel Cook: 1 for 4, HR, 2 SO, GiDP
Augusta: 1B Luke Anders: 1 for 4, HR, SO
Augusta: LF Nick Liles: 2 for 3, GiDP
Augusta: SP Devan Kline: 5.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K--1 PO, 1 E
Augusta: RP Ryan Verdugo: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Anders had his 4th HR, and later in the game Cook had his 1st HR. Liles, the Giants' seventh rounder a year ago, was the only GreenJacket with a multi-hit line, raising his AVG to .333.
After nine relief appearances last year and seven this year, Kline made his first pro start. He faced just one batter over the minimum in five innings. Verdugo had 3 K but allowed the other four batters he faced all to reach base. He has now allowed 6 ER over his three appearances this year, giving him an ERA of nearly 15.00.

Damn, Brandon Belt is on fire
SSS I know, but he looks a steal in the 5th round.
LOL @ Jack Cust’s line…Bochy would never allow such a thing.
I wonder if Verdugo repeating A ball hurt his confidence, since he dominated there last year and was a college pitcher.
Lastly, it would be nice if Charlie Culberson could end up being…anything. I’m not hopeful but he had a good game.

Well, a sub-Mendoza hitting error machine IS something!

Hmmm. Hitting a rather empty .303. Only a .340 OBP and a .378 SLG. 4 SBs in 5 attempts. Thats not great numbers, especially not from a DH/LF

He's DHing a lot?
I know he moved to LF from 2B…I would think that he would be able to stick in LF

It said he had 9 games DHing, and only 4 or 5 in LF. Thats weird considering how fast he is. I know speed doesnt make you a good fielder, but it sure helps.

Hmm that is weird
especially considering LF is relatively new to him, you think he should get as many reps as possible

Anyone got a sense of how Belt's fielding is?
Also, think he’ll get the move up to AA come July?
OBP over 500 is just ridiculous.
/tempers excitement by looking at Neal’s line

Proud of both my adopted son, Baggs, and my ward, Ryan LOLlis.
IDK about Belt's D
but he has speed…which like Graham said isn’t the end all-be all but it helps. Also if he keeps playing at a high rate I think he gets the call to Richmond in June/July. And don’t worry Neal is still real.

BA’s Draft Report last year had him as the best defensive player in our draft.

So he has power, patience and defense?
MIND ASSPLODES
July???
I think he should be moved up NOW. He’s dominating A pitchers. Its not just the obvious – .BA OBP Slg etc. Its the fact that he has struck out 4 times in 71 plate appearances while putting up the other off the chart numbers. Plus Richmond doesn’t have a true prospect at 1B.
There is no reason to wait. Get him to AA now. If he hits big there he can be at AAA by July 1 and ready for the Bigs in 11.
Yeah
Even given the sample size, there are literally zero red flags here. He should get the Brandon Crawford treatment and catch up with the group at AA.
Juan "Doesn't Cheat The Game" Perez, please keep hitting.
Even if he had 20 K’s and no home runs, there would be literally no red flags.
Anyway, 75 PA’s aren’t enough for for K’s and BB’s either. The guy who had the worst K/BB in the majors last year currently has more BB’s than K’s through 70 PA’s.
I was promised lasagna.
True
I just mean there isn’t anything glaringly obvious like with Crawford last year.

Belt's current line:
.433/.520/.700
LOL SSS! and all that, but damned if the11:4 BB/K in 60 ABs doesn’t make me excited.
.277/.399/.518 out of a shortstop?!
Keep on, keepin' on, Ryan Cavan
He is seriously going 2008 Pablo Sandoval on the Cal League. They let Pablo play 68 games for the Little Giants that year (1.009 OPS), but he was younger than Belt is now and didn’t have quite the same pedigree — in fact he had not hit particularly well as a pro prior to that season. So if the Nuts and Storm pitchers don’t figure him out pretty quickly, I expect him to find his way to Richmond in early June, with about 45 professional games under his, um, belt. That’s… making good progress, I’d say.
Pablo’s age 18 season in the NWL (.330/.383/.425) was actually pretty exceptional considering his age relative to league (the NWL is traditionally dominated by college players, even college seniors). He had a disaster in the Sally, but started putting things back together in the Cal League again as a pretty young player at 20. It was in the second half of that 20 year old season that his power started to show up.

You know what would be awesome?
If, by 2013 or so, we had a big, three-way logjam at first base, with Sandoval, Belt, and Joseph.

Ok this is off the wall
But what about Joe Borchard? I know he’s failed at every ML attempt and that he is in essence at Fresno to fill out the roster. But ….

But he’s AAA filler. But he was a tree so he should have his education to fall back on.
