Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

Freddy has been a recent topic of conversation as he is within a couple weeks of joining the big league club. Coverage of his last 2 EST starts can be found here.

Injuries don't seem to be bothering his play.

Very nice, I’m actually really interested in Michael Sandoval. How does he look out there?

He looks a lot like Pablo. Except the hitting part.

Utter frustration and futility.

I’ve seen a decent amount of him against EST guys. The swing is pretty good, pulls a lot of balls over the the third basemen for doubles. He’s got some pop too. The glove and range aren’t the best defensively.

A guy can dream...

Of a #2 hitter who doesn’t ground into double plays on the first pitch. Make it happen Freddy!

He’s been looking good. There is no doubting that he would be a much better 2 hole hitter than Rent. The only question that remains will be if he is more valuable than Uribe’s bat.

Well, I wouldn’t go so far as to say much better. As long as Renteria doesn’t turn back into BONE CHIPS (which, admittedly, is a very real possibility), you could probably make a case for him over Sanchez even with regression in mind. Let’s not overestimate Sanchez’s bat here. He’s a high average, no walk, no power guy. He doesn’t really belong at the top of a lineup either.

Going forward, Sanchez is probably a better hitter than Renteria. As far as improving the offense goes, however, it’s not clear at all that Sanchez can exceed the .320/.366/.400 line Renteria has put up this April. Sanchez’s return will help offset the probable declines from Renteria and Uribe, but it’s probably not going to make the offense better than its bee this April (seeing as, IMO, it’s been playing a bit over its head).
