Who Leaves When Freddy Sanchez Returns From DL?
It is pretty clear to me that Matt Downs will return to Fresno when Aaron Rowand comes of the DL around May 3rd. I am less sure what the Giants will do around May 10th when Freddy Sanchez seems likely to return from the DL. In your answer to the following poll tell me what you think the Giants will do and in your comments to this fanpost tell me what you think the Giants should do.

The Difference Is Obvious
Grant’s post asks what to do with the infield playing time for 5 players (Huff, Sanchez, Renteria, Sandoval , and Uribe while my post asks who will be removed from the 25 man roster and who should be removed from the 25 man roster. These questions are not the same in any respect.

A Second Poll Without Making A Second Fanpost
Discussion was not asked for. Further, Grant’s post does not discuss this. Grant post discusses how to manage the playing time of in essence 5 starting infielders.

But if you read the discussion, you’ll actually get a better idea of what people think.

I did not read carefully enough. I voted for what I thought they should do (Velez to AAA), not what I thought they will do, then read your last couple sentences. To me, the excuse for Velez is we need an IF option (regardless of how bad he is, he’s certainly more of an IF than Bowker and Schierholtz). With that gone, I’d prefer them. Not gonna get into the reasons as I’ve had this discussion with you previously.

I think you get some unnecessary shit sometimes. For example, I think this is different from Grant’s front-page post. However, when you say something like this that comes across as nothing but snide, especially since the poster already corrected himself, you just sound like an ass.

Fair enough, but I really think making snide comments like that is uncalled for. You could simply point out that you assumed Downs was already returned to Fresno. I’m not trying to call you names, I’m just saying how a comment like that comes across to me. I might be sensitive to that, but I assume it comes across poorly to other people too.

I Didn't View It As Snide But Rather As Just Factual.

You gotta hold on to Waldis. The bullpen needs him.
Bowker to AAA would be useless for him, but it would get him more PT (ugh). And I don’t want to DFA Torres (his defense is good, and his hitting seems to be coming around), and Velez (fast, good defender, versatile).
Bandwagoners are the prostitutes of fandom.
The Bullpen Would Really Miss Waldis' 9.52 ERA In Just 4.2 Innings?
These 4.2 innings could not have been picked up easily by the other 6 members of the bullpen at less then an inning each with better results? This logic alludes me.
by giantsrainman on Apr 27, 2010 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions
I hadn’t given that option real consideration, but I probably would agree with you here – get rid of a reliever. We employ too many. Waldis could definitely use more time in AAA and isn’t contributing much here, both in ability, and in the simple fact that he doesn’t pitch often.
by Missing Barry on Apr 27, 2010 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions
He’s pitched all of 25.1 innings above AA (and only 54 IP at AA)…..maybe he is learning, but I think he has a lot he could work on down in the minors, too. Do you think he’d learn more in a limited role here or in a bigger role in AAA?
by Missing Barry on Apr 27, 2010 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I was weighing those two options.
I tend to think that demoting him would discourage him rather than motivate him. After a few solid outings in the majors, he should get his confidence. The other day after a rough outing, I saw the Panda go to him and put his head against Joaquin’s, giving him some words of confidence. His teammates believe in him, as well as Bochy, who is just going with the guys that are pitching well right now, like Mota, which is good. He’ll let Joaquin cool off and just get his mechanics together in practice. Another rough outing or two and he’ll probably be in Fresno for a couple of weeks.
Bandwagoners are the prostitutes of fandom.
I think getting shelled in the majors and/or never being used by Bochy would hurt his confidence more
I’d send him down and let him develop at Fresno…I don’t think he’s major league ready yet.

I disagree because:
-Giants have had a glut of off days so far, which has made it easier for Bochy to use the studs in the pen without wearing them down.
-3 days off in May, 3 in June, so the above advantage won’t be around anymore.
-As great as I think the starting staff is, I don’t think it can continue to be this good. The pen will have to start picking up more innings.
I’d prefer DFAing Velez but I doubt that happens.
Not sure what to do about my screen name at this point...

Umm, Velez is NOT a GOOD defender. He’s an OK defender, in some situations. Also, he’s not really versatile. I understand that it may look that way because the Giants want to stick him at every position but catcher (BOCHY DON’T YOU DARE!) but him not being really good at any of them pretty much negates his versatility.
Also, he’s 28 years old and still looks really fucking confused out there. If he hasn’t figured it out by now, chances are he’s not gonna.

Velez and Ishikawa are both useless
But it will be Bowker.
The solution
- DFA Velez
- Send Joaquin to AAA until he can aim
- Send Bowker to AAA until he can hit
- Call up Posey to hit
- Call up Ford to take Bowker’s role
- Call up Pucetas, start Pucetas
- Put Wellenmeyer in relief until he gets his shit together. No, one good start doesn’t count
Pucetas isn’t exactly tearing up AAA, now is not the time to call him up and kill is confidence. His whip is actually higher in AAA than Wellemeyers is facing real big leaguers

Yeah, there is no way Ford deserves a spot on the 25-man at this point. Dude is a fringe prospect at best and IS STILL IN AA!

At least that’s who should be leaving.

And I voted for Bowker
Not because it should happen, but because it will happen. It should be Velez getting the DFA, but everyone knows that won’t happen.

Clearly The McCoven Is As Unsure About This As I Am
All one can really conclude for the answers to the poll is that Andres Torres will not be the one to go.
Another precinct reports:
What they should do: get that cancer Velez off the roster.
More generally (keeping in mind that this is not suggested as absolute optimum, only relative optimum, meaning the best they can do with is already in the organization—no hypothetical trades):
. outfield: four-man rotation: DeRosa in LF, Rowand in CF, Schierholtz in RF, Torres rotated through each position in turn, each guy plays 3 days out of four; Torres leadoff when playing, Schierholtz otherwise.
. middle infield: three-man rotation: FSanchez at 2B, Renteria at SS, Uribe rotated through both positions, each guy plays 2 days out of 3.
. corner infield: Sandoval at 3B, Huff at 1B, Posey (called up) gets some time at 1B and some at catcher.
catcher: Molina, with Posey assuming ever more time; Whiteside as backup and mentor for Posey (since he is obviously worlds better defensively than BM).
That’s 12 men, which in my long-held opinion, should be enough, allowing more flexibility in pitching with a 13-man staff. If that’s too radical, leave Bowker in the mix as a bench player.
Gone: Velez (for FSanchez), Ishikawa (for Posey), Downs (for Rowand).
One could do materially better than almost anyone there save The Panda and maybe, when he’s the main catcher, Posey; but all in all, it’s not a bad squad to support a pitching staff such as the G’s now have. But note that the key is not only keeping the best available on the roster, but using them intelligently, so everyone gets enough playing time to stay on his game and contribute in proportion to his real ability (probably needs at least 2/3 play time, certainly more than half) while leaving everyone well rested for the dog days and the stretch.
The pitching is another matter . . . .
