Your first favorite Giant
As a companion piece to the Where Did You Grow Up fanpost, where part of the question is how you became a fan, I wanted to ask folks who their first favorite Giant was. It doesn't even have to be a player - it can be an announcer, a manager, etc. Whoever you first really, really loved in association with the Giants.
My answer will be a very common one: Will Clark. I also loved Robby Thompson, Dave Dravecky, Kevin Mitchell, and, less commonly, Mike Aldrete, but I was all about Will Clark as a kid. For later generations, I think it's probably hard to understand just how amazing Will was to Giants fans at the time. He was a great player, and a player who helped transform the Giants from an awful joke to a real contender, but aside from that, he was just the definition of COOL. The game face, the eye black, the batting stance, that sweetest of all sweet swings. He was amazing. Also, his middle name was (still is, I guess!) Nuschler, so he had that going for him, too.
Actually, if you ask my dad, he'll tell you my first favorite Giant was Jack Clark, back when I was really little. But Jack Clark was traded to the Cardinals when I was four, so my only memories of him are as a Cardinal. So he hardly seems to count.

the other thing I'll say about Will Clark
I was six when he was a rookie, and that’s the first year of baseball I remember really well. I remember bits and pieces from earlier season, but start-to-finish, 1986 is the first that’s really clear for me.
When he left after 1993, I was thirteen. It was extremely shocking. I had known there was a chance he wasn’t coming back, but I couldn’t imagine a Giants team without Will. And to have him go to the Rangers, back in the days before interleague play, when it meant he might never play in San Francisco again….
It was crushing. And then in 1994, the Giants sucked, the strike cancelled the postseason, and Matt Williams got screwed out of his chance at 61 home runs. What a lousy baseball year that was.

Me too.
Mays, McCovey, Marichal, and Bonds 1 were all on the team, but I liked the rookie Alameda Rifle who rarely made a mistake in the field and made the Giants a division winner in the way teams like that need an excellent supporting cast.

I would say Will Clark as he was my favorite player when I was a kid. I collected all of his cards, tried to emulate his swing (a right handed version), and I even had (still have) the game face Will donned in his playing days.
But my very first favorite player was Chili Davis. Probably because of the name.

I liked Barr
He had pinpoint control over that two-seam fastball. I remember watching him warm up in the bullpen sitting just over the wall and getting my first real sense of just how hard those guys throw.
He only lost the consecutive scoreless innings record recently.

The Dominican Dandy
If you grew up in my era you were used to great Giants’ hitters, which I guess is the reason that the great pitcher, Juan Marichal, was my boyhood hero. What a treat it was watching him every FOURTH day. That amazing high leg kick, the different arm angles, that great fastball, and terrific off speed stuff. He had it all. I kid my wife that the only reason I married her is that she’s Dominican, and she comes from the same country as my favorite player. Too bad you guys never saw him in his prime. Then again, we have Timmy!!
Dumped Edgar Renteria and adopted Buster Posey. Biggest upgrade since George Jefferson moved up to a deluxe apartment on the east side!
Me too!
Willie Mays was phenomenally talented, Willie McCovey came through in the clutch (and seemed like such a nice guy – at least to this kid growing up 88 miles away), but it was Juan Marichal who provided the magic. The leg kick, the multiple arm angles on each type of pitch,.. he had it all. (And what sucked was that the national media only wanted to talk about Drysdale, and Koufax -who had just recently retired).
Later, Chris Speier. Then Will Clark.

McCovey and Simmons
The man this blog is named for, who I used to call “Covey”, guess the Mac part was just too tough to spit out when I was a kid.
However, I will say that as an adult, thinking back to my childhood, my real primal memory of Giants’ baseball isn’t a player, a play or a game, it’s being in the backyard with my Dad and brothers listening to Lon Simmons on the radio. And really, that’s the default setting for all baseball in my mind — it’s always filtered through my imagination of what Lon would be saying about it.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
As a kid, the best music I ever heard from the radio was this:
“This is Russ Hodges, along with Lon Simmons and Bill Thompson, ….” Another Giants game was on, and dreams were waiting to be made. It really WAS magic inside – inside the radio.

Loved Lon
What’s kind of funny is that on the old Chronicle Giants board there was a crotchety old guy who stayed a Giants fan since the NY days. He listened to Lon come out of retirement for a few radio broadcasts and just blasted him. You’d think such a long timer would have the fondest memories of old Lon, but this guy was in NY the whole time and never heard him before.

Barry Lamar Bonds. I’m still young be he is who I remember the most, we’d specifically sit in Left field to be behind him. After 2002 I was kind of jaded about the team but Bonds brought me back. My dad and I would have long discussions about when he was going to break the home-run record and how many games it would take and if he’d do it that particular season. I also really liked J T.

When I was a kid, I thought Matt Williams was really swell because I had his baseball card, but I didn’t really know anything about him or about baseball at that point, outside of the basics of the game. I remember being really pissed that they traded him, though.

Willie Mays
Throught the time periods it was Willie Mays, a little later Cepeda, McCovey, and Marichal,Jack Sanford, Johnny Antonelli, Mike McCormick, Later Perry, Jack Clark, John Montefusco, Ed Halicki, Gary Matthews, and Maddux. a little later it was Daryl Evans, then came the Will Clark, robbie Thompson, Kevin Mitchell, Rich Rueschel and Matt Williams along with John Burkett and Billy Swift, also Rod Beck, Then came the Bonds era, along with Rich Aurillia, Jeff Kent, Ellis Burks, Rob Nen, Russ Ortiz, K. Rueter, Sean Estes, Now we have the Tim Lincecum, Cain, SAnchez, Pablo Sandoval era.

He was a catcher, I was a catcher, it just made too much sense. Beyond him, gotta be Barry. For me, watching him play growing up, I understood what it was like for my dad to watch Willie Mays play growing up. I think that made us bond over baseball even more.

The thrill
I was flipping channels one fine April day in 1986 and I stumbled across the Giants opening game. To that point, I had not been much of a baseball fan, but I left the channel for a few minutes and saw Clark hit the home run off of Nolan Ryan. Since then, I’ve been a big fan. I even remember those first few games of 1986—sweeping the Astros and then going to LA and winning the first two games (the second on a dramatic comeback against Fernando Valenzuela). I remember Chili hitting a home run in the astro dome to get an important win in June, I remember sweeping the Astros in 4 games (the last two in a double header), I remember Kelly Downs major league debut, I even remember Randy Kutcher. Great baseball season.
This is almost exactly my story. To the point of being a little creepy.
Though you left out the great ending to that season — Krukow’s 20th win on the last day of the season against the Dodgers in LA.

Me: “Hey, remember that Robb Nen jersey I wanted to get, the #31 for my birthday a couple years back?”
Her: “I thought you always wore #24 when you played.”
Me: “Well, yeah. 24 is an OF number – I was a CF; 31 is more of a pitcher’s number anyway, and Nen was my hero when I was a kid”
Her: “I thought number requirements were only in football… DON’T explain. Whatever. Fine.”
And now I have it. Win!
"Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time."
When I was about 9
I was a pitcher in little league and used to tap my toe like Nenn for one season, I stopped because I pitched horrible when I did it.

I used to do that too. Ended up having shoulder problems – go figure.

JT Snow.
Class act. Great guy. Wish I could meet him in person.
I swung by a Macy’s appearance a couple of years after he retired and was surprised to see a line many times longer than I would be willing to wait in.

On an off day before a visit to the latrine, I saw JT & fam at Disneyland in line for Pirates of the Carribean.

I couldn't be prouder of my recent adoptee - Tim Lincecum's dealer. He provides the secret fuel behind both Cy Youngs. Also, he taught Timmy the change-up.

JT Snow
Even though objectively he was somewhat frustrating, that endeared him more to me.
Honorable mentions:
Kirk Rueter
Rich Aurilia
I liked Jeff Kent before he revealed his massive douchery.

though I was also very fond of Jeffrey Leonard and Jose Uribe.
Mark DeRosa knows that it's hard to sound intelligent with a Jersey accent.
Bobby Bonds
Courtesy of an NBC Game of the Week one Saturday afternoon in ’73 or ’74. He just looked like a ballplayer. Even in that weird stadium with the chain-link fence.

I loved Visquel, Matheny, Durham, Jason Schmidt, JT Snow

Jon Miller … Listened to him when I was sick with pneumonia for three weeks during the playoffs and WS of 2001. I didn’t know a single Giant except Bonds, but Miller was my favorite. Still is.
Still backing Notgardo, wheresoever he may wander. (Don't forget to wriiiite!)
I approve of this comment.
Utter frustration and futility.

Gary Matthews at age 6. When playing ball in the backyard or the street, I’d yell, “I’M GARY MATTHEWS!” with each swing of the bat. The next week (I’m guessing), it changed to John Montefusco.
My first favorite who lasted a long time was Willie McCovey, once he came back from the Padres.
Yes, really, I have not updated my blog in a long long time: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball

Temporarily refocused on hockey-related exercises... growing a beard, wearing teal, punching random people as I walk to class...
Matt Williams was the first favorite player I ever had and he still his my favorite of all time. Will Clark was a close second in those days. After both of them were no longer on the team I liked Nen, Aurilia, and Kent. In the new generation of Giants I think my favorites have to be Cain, Sanchez, and of course Pablo.

Read a book by Gaylord Perry in grade school and thought he was coolest and funniest dude ever (though as a 6th grader I had no idea what this “K-Y jelly” stuff was that he loved so much). Wore many a Little League hat with Vaseline under the visor…

If we do "favorite ever" Giant I might have to get in this line
And that’s out of 40 years of Giant fandom. He’s that awesome, on and off the field.

Robb Nen is my #1
earliest favorite? Will Clark.

A good question...
Let see…Chili Davis/Jeffrey Lenoard were the first 2 players that I rooted for…
But I think my biggest favs were Will Clark & Kevin Mitchell. Yup the Pacific Stock Exchange. To this day my beloved poster stil hangs on my wall. Do you guys know this poster? Cant seem to find it on the net. I should take a pic of it…
it's hanging in my garage

first in a long list...
Darrel Evans. So bummed to see him go to Detroit and kick ass. It’s tough for a 12-year-old to understand free agency. Especially when we would only get guys like Al Oliver and David Green.

Dravecky. And Jeffrey Leonard. Krukow was fun to watch. When Will Clark came, it revived the whole Bay Area.
Jack Clark? Too young to remember him as a Giant, but I remember how loud the boos were when he visited in a Padres uni. It was kinda like Jeff Kent of that era.
