Post-game thread: Giants lose 75th game of 2009
Hey, if the Giants hold the opposing team to five runs in a Wellemeyer start, that's a good thing, right? But, alas, perennial Cy Young candidate Jon Garland was the wrong pitcher at the wrong time, and the Giants go 1-5 on the road trip. The Giants went 0-6 on a similar road trip last year, so for all of you Sabean-haters who think he didn't improve the team, scoreboard, suckers!. That's an extra win in Sabean's back pocket, and we aren't even out of the first month!

Unfounded Optimism and Hope
I know I’m probably spitting into the wind here. I’m not quite buying the sky is falling scenario. Not yet, at least.
We as a community want to get on the Giants for overvaluing RBI and Runs scored, Batting Averages and other traditional matrices when evaluating team performances. Well, I want to avoid falling into that same trap myself. Yes I realize everything is SSS, but analysis based solely on the result is about the worst type of analysis there is. (ie, OMG Bochy sent the runner and Renteria lined into a double play, what a horrible decision) I want to step away from the records and results and look at the numbers in a vacuum for just a minute.
The Giants have the 10th best wOBA in MLB at .341 entering today. If you prefer wRC, the Giants are the 9th best team in the MLB. This should produce a league average offense.
The Giants rank #16, or exactly average, in BB/K ratio. We draw one walk for every 2 strike outs. This is league average.
Believe it or not, the Giants are ranked #14, or average, in isolated power as well. Shocking, I know, but it is true.
So what exactly is the problem? If the Giants are not striking out more than average, has league average power, and gets on base better than average, shouldn’t the end product on the field be a better than league average offense?
Enter the culprit : 21 Double Plays in 15 games.
The giants have a 18.1% LD% so far. It’s slightly below average, teams tend to hit 19% over the course of a year, and doesn’t deviate much from that number. They also have a 1.23 GB/ FB ratio, which is pretty average. The top 5 GB% teams? Marlins, Brewers, Braves, Pirates, Astros.
Marlins : 50% GB, 7 GIDP
Brewers : 49% GB, 9 GIDP
Braves: 48.7% GB, 10 GIDP
Pirates : 48.5% GB, 11 GIDP
Astros : 47.9% GB, 7 GIDP
Giants : 45% GB, 21 GIDP
The Giants are not hitting more ground balls, they are hitting ground balls at the least opportune times. They are hitting it right at people with man on base. As Billy Bean once said in moneyball : “That’s Fucking Luck.”
The Giants are not striking out a ton. They are putting the ball in play. Double plays happen. They’re just happening much more often than normal right now. There isn’t anything you can really do about it. It’s fucking luck.
Here’s to hoping that the luck changes soon.
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW
I agree in theory with what you’re saying however I feel the first 7 games were an aberration and the last 8 are the reality
There's no fucking way
Even if you think this team is bad, we’re not even close to as bad as we’ve been the past two series. Neither one of them is reality.
My Son was the third most valuable Giant position player by WAR in 2009. A little sad, a little happy.
I predict that history will look kindly on the 09 offseason, even if we were pissed at the time.
That’s really interesting, thank you for posting that. I’m not sure I can fall into the “unfounded optimism and hope” line just yet but seeing that makes me less inclined to hang myself.
I think the thing that’s making me so cynical/depressed is the feeling I can’t shake from last year that every game is “MUST WIN.” We finished 7 games back in the West last year but only 4 in the Wild Card. I think most people here could name 4-7 games (or more) the Giants could/should have won but for the complete shit offense. I can’t completely shake this mindset (similar to what DFARowand posted above) that the offense of the first 10 games is the anommoly and what we’re currently seeing is the real deal. Even in the face of real statistics that demonstrate there’s a certain amount of luck involved.
But I’m trying. I’m really am. Because I don’t want to have a pessimistic outlook for the whole season. I just wanna enjoy some baseball.
in the best shape of my life

So you are saying that ‘coincidentally’ the Giants happen to be hitting more ground balls in situations where the opposing pitchers just happen to be trying to induce more ground balls? ball
Be careful with me. I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way.
by cybermaldonado on Apr 21, 2010 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Im in this line. Pitchers are pitching for the double play, and the Giants keep getting on top of the ball and grounding one to an infielder, where other players are trying harder to make they get under it.

I don’t think so. I’m not sure exactly how to look up that data, but for reference,
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=b&team=SFG&year=2010#bases
The Giants, in general, hit very well with men on base less than 2 outs. It just so happens when they don’t hit, it results in a double play more often (current rate 14%, league average 10%. I believe this is due to SSS. These things all even out when there is a large enough sample size because that is the fundamental idea behind BABIP)
Last year, league average was 11%. Guess how the Giants did?
They GIDP 11% of the time.
Science.
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW
actually they will be worse this year
they essentially traded Fred Lewis for Mark DeRosa and Randy Winn for Aubrey Huff, as far as the everyday lineup is concerned. They are now slower, on average. Bochy doesn’t hit and run, they don’t have basestealers and they hit a lot of ground balls.
if Mark DeRosa and Aubrey Huff are the answer, I guess I just didn't understand the question.
But they don't hit a lot of ground balls..........
I mean, the data says they don’t hit a lot of ground balls. Their GB / FB ratio is league average.
Trading Fred Lewis and Randy Winn for Aubrey Huff and Mark DeRosa will not have a pronounced impact on team GIDP . Edgar Renteria hit in to 17 double play in 77 chances last year (or 22), Pablo Sandoval 8% and Nate Schierholtz 9%.
Speed matters, but not nearly as much as just plain luck.
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW
We got good situational hitting. Then we didn't.
If it had never happened I’d be more depressed than I am.
But since it did, there’s a good chance it will again.

well, how many stolen bases did we lose?
many of those steals eliminated the possibility of GIDP. Some GIDP’s were probably eliminated by hard slides at 2b by faster guys who were able to get to second in time to break up the DP. Some GIDP situations were probably eliminated by hits that were doubles for Winn/Lewis. I am not arguing with the numbers, only saying that the numbers don’t cover the true magnitude of the speed effect. DeRosa and Huff seem to be getting on base more than Lewis and Winn, creating more situations.
if Mark DeRosa and Aubrey Huff are the answer, I guess I just didn't understand the question.

Meulens needs to get on this crap. The double plays are killing us, the lack of small ball fundamentals by a team that has zero pop needs to execute. If he swings then he’s out, if he hits it then he out on a GIDP, if he walks then get the next guy to GIDP. What a better confidence for an opposing pitcher than knowing you can poke a stick at the dead dog that is our offense.
Hard hits that get caught nicely or turned into DP i can tolerate, but not this weak groundball shit. The umping isn’t helping but that is no excuse. This is up to the coaching staff to fix in my mind, on a confidence level and a execution level from Bochy and Meulens.
I want to see Meulens work on their approach and I want to see Bochy try really hard to be marginal at his job. Then again I’m just a dreamer

Schierholtz looked decent at the plate today; I’m hoping his spring difficulties are more or less past him. And if Bowker has to be a platoon, I’d MUCH rather have a Bowker/Schierholtz platoon than a Bowker/Torres platoon.

But I wonder what’s going to happen with Bowker. It’s not just the .189 average, but the passive at-bats and the perceived lack of fire that I’d wager is most troublesome to the coaching staff.
Bowker got screwed out of a single in the third inning, when his ground ball hit the base and deflected away. The umpire, Scott Barry, inexplicably called it a foul ball. The play happened right in front of Bowker, but he only pointed at the base for an instant before becoming resigned to his fate and turning back for the dugout.

I’m not really willing to trade Cain b/c pitching is obviously is our best strength is pitching and we don’t have a good replacement in the farm system that’s ML ready to take Cain’s spot. Plus for Fielder isn’t he a FA after the 2011 season? I don’t want him for a year and then have to give him a huge contract considering he’s asking for a Mauer type deal. Not worth it.

Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?

I assume you mean real suggestions and not ones that fall under the category of selling yourself for other people’s carnal desires.
I know there are a lot of grants and small ($100 – $5000 range) scholarship awards you can apply for. They have ones set up for people in just about every walk of life. The school should have some information on these. Just getting a couple hundred extra dollars here and there can be extremely helpful, especially when they aren’t loans you have to pay back.

Yeah, the first thing I did after accepting my aid and freaking out last night was contact the school about scholarships. I’m going to look outside the school, too, but this is basically the first time I’ve had to supplement my federal aid for school with anything more than a part time job, so I’m a little new to the whole process. Which is why suggestions are awesome.

Yeah, I had a lot of friends in college who went to Campolindo and they were as prepared if not more prepared than me and my “fancy private school education.” But similar to jct, I had to got to private school (or was at least luck enough to get the choice) because where I grew up in Oakland, it would have been so much harder to go to public school and get into a good college.
Universities often look more at where the transcript is coming from than what’s contained in it and for a lot of public school students, you pretty much have to be at the top of your class to be considered, which is so unfortunate.

yea dude! like, i feel as though Campo was almost harder than college, and it’s because they took that pride into really preparing their students. And i’m hearing all my friends that went to private schools talk about how they skipped classes and all that, i never really did…. But this is very true, going to a public school in downtown Oakland, or SF would make it tougher to go to a good college

LOL ELITISM
I went to a small liberal arts college in NY.
Total cost of tuition for my 5 year program: $261,000
The only way I could even think about going there. They offered me a $12,000 dollar a year scholarship and even then I had to take out a ton of loans that I’m just starting to pay off now.

Nah, GW
Though, to be fair, GW does have a fixed-tuition policy, which means you pay what you pay your freshman year for all 4 years, which means my tuition is actually a couple thousand lower.

I know a lot of fellow grads who have mitigated cost to almost nothing by working for the school. Maybe that’s not allowed at a private institution. An all woman’s private institution. If not, that’s horrible and I object.

Um...Fuck Andy Van Slyke, who threw his ex - teammate under the bus.
From a 2004 interview in The Sporting News.
Ballou: How difficult will this season be for Barry Bonds?
Van Slyke: I think it is going to be very difficult. Even before Barry was taking steroids, or allegedly was taking steroids—when I played with him—I weighed more than him, and yet he was still a tremendous player. He still had good power and was an MVP. (But) the physical facts are the physical facts, and when you’re 36, 37 and 38 years old is not when you peak with your home run production…. If it’s coming, I think it’s probably due, just like anything else in Barry Bonds’ past. If it’s bad press, it’s usually his responsibility.
Ballou: Are you telling us, in your opinion, that it looks like Barry Bonds has taken steroids?
Van Slyke: Unequivocally, he’s taken them…. I can say that with utmost certainty. Now, I never saw him put it into his body. But, look, Barry went to the bank with the robber, he drove the car, he got money in his pocket from the bag that came out of the bank. Come to your own conclusion. Did he spend the money? You decide. I think he did

During the 1991 Gulf War, when the MLB decreed all players would wear both the Canadian and U.S. flags on their batting helmets as a patriotic gesture, Van Slyke scraped the Maple Leaf off his helmet because, in his words “Canada is a pacifist, socialist country.”
