He gave up the walk

If he had been out of there earlier, we wouldn’t be down. I’m not blaming Zito at all, but he has a noted tendency to fade at the end of games, and after the first batter of the inning it was obvious he did not have it. That is what I am saying. The snarky comments are really not necessary

Check the thread

People were openly debating pulling Zeets, and those who did brought up the point that he fades in the end.

Sure, none of them could have predicted a walk+ Manny HR, but there was fair wisdom for those who said Zeets was earning a good game and to pull him as soon as he walked, which is exactly what happened.

Those who wanted him pulled before he even started the inning may have been correct also, but does that mean Romo would have thrown a perfect 8th and 9th? (or wilson, etc.)?

It’s easy to talk shoulda-beens after a loss.

It’s fine to put some faith in your starting pitcher, but in a one run game you need to know who’s going out there to the mound. You’re paying your late relief millions of dollars for a reason, and Zito is not strong at the end of games.

I like Zito, but I didn’t see a good reason NOT to send Affeldt out there.

They are not the same person. They are different pitchers with different pitches, different approaches, different speeds, different staminas, and different track records. On this level of analysis you can’t make them fungible, and the 4th inning is still not the 8th inning.

by Solidarity on Apr 18, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

In short, shit happens even when you do everything right.

To expand slightly:
Zito was doing fine, it was a totally rational decision to leave him in, Romo is a good pitcher, and- based upon the “evidence” you keep using- you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Proud parent of Will the Thrill, standard-bearer of The Giants Way.

by WhereThere'sAWillieThere'sAMays on Apr 18, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

In my short, my position is this:

Zito got the first out, but it was a telling at-bat. I wouldn’t have had him starting the 8th in the first place, and after the warning track fly ball (noting that Zito is a career 1 HR/9 pitcher), I thought it was a fine time to call it a day. Letting him walk a batter brings the winning run to the plate in Manny Ramirez. I don’t think any of that is particularly ridiculous on my part.

Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.

by Solidarity on Apr 18, 2010 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

You would have had the same reaction if Affeldt came in and gave up a walk and a homer right? You would have said it was the right decision to pull Zito because “he’s not strong at the end of games?”

by Into the Void on Apr 18, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

No. I thought Zito was done after 7. If Affeldt comes in and doesn’t do his job, that’s on Affeldt.

If the Giatns had a reasonible offense things are different but they don’t so preventing 90 feet and keeping the other teams best bats from coming up with out a chance to win the game becomes the fucous.

Because Affeldt puts the ball in play. Romo’s BABIP is 100 points higher from last season.

Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.

by Solidarity on Apr 18, 2010 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Uh, yeah, that’s the whole point of FIP. Affeldt, while still good, got lucky on balls in play last year. Romo was unlucky. Based on their component stats, Romo is probably a better pitcher than Affeldt. And it’s continued this year, as Romo is striking out over 10 per 9 without giving up a walk yet.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare

by jponry on Apr 18, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Does FIP account for the location of the pitch when it’s put in play? (Honest question, not rhetorical.)

The way I am reading Affeldt’s BABIP is that he is pitching to contact, and so when the ball is put into play it is usually not hit well, thus accounting for outs and double plays.

I’d rather try to have Manny put the ball on the ground than try to strike him out. Admittedly, that’s a personal preference and I think it sits at the crux of my argument, as far as Romo vs. Affeldt goes in that situation.

Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.

by Solidarity on Apr 18, 2010 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

No, it does not. For the most part, this evens out with a large enough sample size and the correlation of FIP to ERA is pretty good.

by speckops on Apr 18, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay. Cause I see Romo’s .350 BABIP and 10+ K/9 as saying, “He’s got great strikeout stuff, but when he makes mistakes to location, he misses badly and hitters get solid contact.”

I don’t know what FIP has to say about that, as admittedly my understanding of it is poor.

by DFARowand on Apr 18, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you consider late in games, because he sure looked good in the seventh. Let’s be clear: long at bats are a result of both the hitter and pitcher being good, not because the pitcher is bad. The fact that Zito went through those long at bats with good hitters and came out unscathed was a testament to how good he was.

You can call it blaming someone after the fact if you like

But, many of us had the same thought when we realized Bochy was bringing in Romo instead of Affeld or Wilson: “WTF?”

Be careful with me. I'm sensitive and I'd like to stay that way.
