If it was me i was thinking more to get out of the 8th. If he had been out of there earlier, we wouldn’t be down. I’m not blaming Zito at all, but he has a noted tendency to fade at the end of games, and after the first batter of the inning it was obvious he did not have it. That is what I am saying. The snarky comments are really not necessary

Dude, your position is indefensible. Barry Zito was a Cy Young winner in 2002, but he also struggled for the last 3 seasons. I like Zito, and I’m not mad at him. I’m mad at Bochy for not using his assets well.
Affeldt should have been in the game after the first out. Period.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
I would have started inning with Affeldt

The money lies in the RBIs
-- Jeff Kent
People are accusing me of ‘zomg not knowing that Zito was going strong.’ I would have started Affeldt in the 8th too, but after the first batter I DEFINITELY would have pulled Zito, and I with a runner on and 1 out, Affeldt is a no-brainer.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
you’re arguing that he should have been pulled based on evidence that occurred after the decision was made to not pull him?

No, I thought he should have been pulled after the first AB. Then he walked a guy.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
On a 3-2 pitch that could’ve been called either way. Would you have advocated pulling him if had been strike three?

Yes. The balls that were outside weren’t close.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
Check the thread
People were openly debating pulling Zeets, and those who did brought up the point that he fades in the end.
Sure, none of them could have predicted a walk+ Manny HR, but there was fair wisdom for those who said Zeets was earning a good game and to pull him as soon as he walked, which is exactly what happened.
Those who wanted him pulled before he even started the inning may have been correct also, but does that mean Romo would have thrown a perfect 8th and 9th? (or wilson, etc.)?
It’s easy to talk shoulda-beens after a loss.
Better to be a Giants fan than an Athletic supporter!
this.
Then not bring in either of your 2 best relievers. you had to know Manny was going to hit witha runner on in a 1 one run game.

Acting like it’s a strange decision to give a starting pitcher a short leash and take him out after one baserunning is ridiculous. It happens all the time. It turns out just fine a large percentage of the time.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
It’s fine to put some faith in your starting pitcher, but in a one run game you need to know who’s going out there to the mound. You’re paying your late relief millions of dollars for a reason, and Zito is not strong at the end of games.
I like Zito, but I didn’t see a good reason NOT to send Affeldt out there.

It’s not hindsight dude. I said it then, and I’ll say it now. Zito should have gotten pulled after the first batter.

The 4th inning is not the 8th inning, and Lincecum is not Zito. These corelaries do not work.

They are not the same person. They are different pitchers with different pitches, different approaches, different speeds, different staminas, and different track records. On this level of analysis you can’t make them fungible, and the 4th inning is still not the 8th inning.

In short, shit happens even when you do everything right.
To expand slightly:
Zito was doing fine, it was a totally rational decision to leave him in, Romo is a good pitcher, and- based upon the “evidence” you keep using- you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Proud parent of Will the Thrill, standard-bearer of The Giants Way.
by WhereThere'sAWillieThere'sAMays on Apr 18, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions
In my short, my position is this:
Zito got the first out, but it was a telling at-bat. I wouldn’t have had him starting the 8th in the first place, and after the warning track fly ball (noting that Zito is a career 1 HR/9 pitcher), I thought it was a fine time to call it a day. Letting him walk a batter brings the winning run to the plate in Manny Ramirez. I don’t think any of that is particularly ridiculous on my part.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
You would have had the same reaction if Affeldt came in and gave up a walk and a homer right? You would have said it was the right decision to pull Zito because “he’s not strong at the end of games?”
by Into the Void on Apr 18, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions
No. I thought Zito was done after 7. If Affeldt comes in and doesn’t do his job, that’s on Affeldt.

The trick here is to manage situations so a great player can do teh least ammount of damage.
What should have been done was let the reliever start the inning. Bringin him in to face manny and witha runner on 1st was piss poor decsion making.

In a late inning, low scoreing, 1 run game I think a manager has to be agressive in defending his teams chances on getting the last 6 outs with out loseing the lead. Well we disagree. No hard feelings about it.

For the record, I would have been fine with bringing in a reliever, but when a pitcher has given up 3 hits and no walks in 7 innings I’m not going to act like it’s a slam dunk decision to go to the bullpen immediately. People are mad, and the obvious emotional reaction is to blame Bochy.
The #1 greatest threat to America: BEARS
Just because Zito was not sucking ( and we was good) the manager should be looking at the what is going to take to get the last 6 outs with giving up a run in this situation.
If the Giatns had a reasonible offense things are different but they don’t so preventing 90 feet and keeping the other teams best bats from coming up with out a chance to win the game becomes the fucous.

I’m looking at ERA, not home runs. Since the goal is to not give up runs.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
Romo’s FIP last year was better than Affeldt’s. A lot better.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
Because Affeldt puts the ball in play. Romo’s BABIP is 100 points higher from last season.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
Uh, yeah, that’s the whole point of FIP. Affeldt, while still good, got lucky on balls in play last year. Romo was unlucky. Based on their component stats, Romo is probably a better pitcher than Affeldt. And it’s continued this year, as Romo is striking out over 10 per 9 without giving up a walk yet.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
Does FIP account for the location of the pitch when it’s put in play? (Honest question, not rhetorical.)
The way I am reading Affeldt’s BABIP is that he is pitching to contact, and so when the ball is put into play it is usually not hit well, thus accounting for outs and double plays.
I’d rather try to have Manny put the ball on the ground than try to strike him out. Admittedly, that’s a personal preference and I think it sits at the crux of my argument, as far as Romo vs. Affeldt goes in that situation.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
No, it does not. For the most part, this evens out with a large enough sample size and the correlation of FIP to ERA is pretty good.
Okay. Cause I see Romo’s .350 BABIP and 10+ K/9 as saying, “He’s got great strikeout stuff, but when he makes mistakes to location, he misses badly and hitters get solid contact.”
I don’t know what FIP has to say about that, as admittedly my understanding of it is poor.
Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.
LOL

I mean, Zito hadn’t given up a walk all game. How does criticizing Bochy make any sense?

*sigh*
because he was fading in the 8th. He was having problems throwing strikes. He should not have pitched that inning. That is my opinion. The majority of people do not agree with it. That’s fine. I still maintain that we would have won if Affedlt or Romo had started the inning. But it is done.

what was Romo to do walk the tying run to 2nd?
I can’t believe I am going to use Kurkism but the base for teh pitcher to play with is 1st and that was already takeing. The kid was in bad spot.
Threat level that the 2010 Pads finish with more wins than the 2010 Giants is currently at - 25%

walking the tying run to second would have been better than what he actually did.

he walks Manny do you think he doesn’t fall down teh ‘pen totem pole in Rags and or Bochey’s eyes?
I mean imperically yes a walk is better then a homer there but you want your relievers to chalange and at that point what can he do? He has to go with teh pitch he thinks is working best that day.
Threat level that the 2010 Pads finish with more wins than the 2010 Giants is currently at - 25%
Um this isn’t Timmy. It’s pretty obvious that it’s pretty touch and go with Zito in the late innings. I know it’s April but when you have a chance to take a series from The Bums in LA you go for it. Go Wilson there for the 5 out save.
So take out a pitcher after 95 pitches, and who hadn’t shown a sign of weakness yet?

I consider a 15 pitch AB to the pitcher a sign of weakness, I consider a stressful 7th inning facing Ethier and Kemp as a sign of weakness, I consider giving up a deep flyball to reed fucking johnson a sign of weakness
So what I’m taking from this debate is that getting behind in the count while still getting the out and allowing fly balls to mediocre players are reasons to take a pitcher out.
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.

A taxing inning that still left him with 95 pitches. It doesn’t matter if the taxing inning is the first or seventh inning, as long as the pitch count is low.
And no, I don’t put all my stock into one at bat where an out still occurred.
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.

I love how you keep using 95 pitches as a barometer. What number would you have considered enough. 100? 105? 109? Remember this is Barry Zito not Cain or Lincecum. Zito clearly struggles when it gets late in games.
What do you consider late in games, because he sure looked good in the seventh. Let’s be clear: long at bats are a result of both the hitter and pitcher being good, not because the pitcher is bad. The fact that Zito went through those long at bats with good hitters and came out unscathed was a testament to how good he was.
