"I’m told the Giants won’t have a new player in uniform for Saturday afternoon’s game. But if Rowand goes on the DL, good chance Eugenio Velez becomes the center fielder and Darren Ford would be a leading candidate to join the club in a reserve role. I wouldn’t expect the Giants to call up center fielder Francisco Peguero, who is raking for Single-A San Jose. But both guys are on the 40-man roster, for what it’s worth." --Andrew Baggerly on Extra Baggs

Ford is off to a poor start for AA Richmond this season and is across the country. What’s that you say they have planes nowadays?

San Francisco Peguero is tearing up Hi A San Jose and can be in LA by daybreak.

I would think a cracked cheek bone and a concusion would require a DL stint, right? Gamer or not, the dude needs to sit down and let the club bring up a guy that really plays CF

But the recent Giants history shows us that it would take a week before they decide to DL him.

Life is about opportunities

Now is a good time for any one player to step up.

Who is ready for their close-up?

A) Velez
B) Torres
C) Ford
D) Peguero
E( DeMille

I assume A & B. But it would be interesting if there was anyone else worthy

Wil

I think E) should have been Norma Desmond.

I totally agree with the concept. Thank goodness for the DL; it’s really been a huge help the last few years, forcing Bochy & Sabean into doing some right things instead of staying with fading veterans. Here’s hoping somebody steps up.

that would be the proper name. Thought Cecil might be more known. So maybe B) DeMille.

Personally

I’d start Nate in CF, Bowker in RF and DeRosa in LF. Torres and Velez as bench guys. I also wouldn’t mind the Giants taking a flier on Rocco Baldelli-although I don’t know if he’s injured or not. But our OF depth is shot-I guess…Guzman could be a decent fill in but I have no idea if he’s taken to LF.

Good. One of these days we’re going to need a spot for a 5th starter.

I’m betting that extra roster spot is going to be used to add Denny Bautista (who is off to a ridiculous start in AAA) and send down Joaquin

I Ain't Buying Ford As A Likely Candidate

The Giants have six outfielders so Rowand going on the DL would still leaves 5 thus no real need to add another. To me Rohlinger or Downs are much more likely candidates.

by giantsrainman on Apr 17, 2010 3:10 AM PDT reply actions

I am expecting Darren to come to San Francisco in September to get another look, provided he evens out in AA. You know the brass want another look at him, and want to see how he handles the big show.

Aubrey Huff: guilty until proven productive.
Andres Torres: perfectly cromulent.

by Solidarity on Apr 17, 2010 6:46 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree. I don’t see what Ford could bring the club that Torres doesn’t already cover. Actually their OF depth makes no move seem more likely than any move to me.

Ford has more upside as being a potential long term piece. I like Torres as much as anybody, but he’s past 30 and has trouble making contact sometime. Ford could eventually be an everyday starter who hits at the top of the order and swipes bags, while Torres will always be a 4th outfielder.

That said, there’s nowhere to put Ford until the Giants move Rowand (somehow).

I’m all for bringing up Ford and giving him a shot, but only if he plays everyday. It doesn’t make any sense to have him just sit on the bench for a few weeks. If that’s all they want, call up Copeland or McBryde.

Not gonna happen with 6 outfielders. I’m guessing there’s zero chance he is an everyday player at the major league level this year, short of the team bus crashing.

by Solidarity on Apr 17, 2010 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

You can’t have Ford play every day for the major league team. That’s crazy. He’s spent his whole career struggling to hit in single A ball…. he’s fine as a backup on the team, but playing him every day is a one way ticket to bocockurrissville.

The fact that Ford has some upside is exactly why they shouldn’t call him up with a week of experience in the upper minors. Leave him alone and let him keep developing

by FluLikeSymptoms on Apr 17, 2010 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes and No. Right now mostly NO.

Let’s see Ford handle something above single A pitching for a bit. Tell then what we have is an older Bocock/Burriss in the makeing. After he shows a little something positive in AA he would get “intresting”.

Velez now leads the league in ninth inning homeruns that make final scores look respectable. He’s going to get all of the starts, and Torres will be the defensive replacement. I would think they’ll call up some vet like Borchard for pinch hitting duties.

that's actually not a bad idea

We have a ton of corner OFs but it would be good to get somebody that can actually play center. I wonder what Dukes has been doing (other than threatening to kill people and being a horrible person), he would only be useful to us if he could be ready to play right away.

I think regardless of Rowands injury we should sign Dukes. He’d probably sign a minor league deal and I’d rather Dukes get ABs in Fresno than EME.

Sometimes players say facing a knuckleballer can screw your swing up for a week. With Nate, it probably won’t be a problem. He’ll have to wait at least that long to get another start.
