The whole point was that she was a fantasy girl TO HIM and he treated her as such. The first guy who treated her like a real person won her part.
Still, best part of the movie is his post-coital afterglow where he sees Han Solo as his reflection.

I have no desire to diminish what he did. I just dont think the logic that of that if player in the 40's didnt break through that no one EVER would.
