Official What to do with Fred Lewis:

Aight, so here's the post where i, and a few others have agreed to discuss what will or might happen to Fred Lewis.  Whether he'll be traded by the weekend, or up to the big club.  Who'll go down?  TI?  So i'm gonna go out there and say that he should be traded, just so everyone's happy, he's obviously disgruntled, and so is are the Giants, so have at it.

I think one of Ishikawa/Velez/Torres should go down

Torres has the same amount of hits as me this year (extreme SSS i know) but he does offer good speed and defense. Truly he should probably stay but Bowker should start against every one.

Velez looks decent so far and can even play emergency 2B but I still don’t think he’ll be anywhere near Lewis’ production.

Ishikawa is probably my personal choice to be DFA’d/traded. We already have Ishikawa’s carbon copy in Brett Pill and we don’t need a defensive specialist at 1B. Plus if Huff gets injured Bowker/Pablo/DeRosa can fill in at 1B and we can call up Guzman/Pill.

I’m in this line. I honestly would like the Giants to cut ties with Velez, but in terms of roster, I unfortunately see no real role for Ishikawa at this point.

Except for the fact that he is likely better than Huff and we don’t have another first baseman?

You could say Panda could backup first. This makes the IF very thin (pardon the pun.)

by positiveuphemism on Apr 15, 2010 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m assuming that Huff is here to stay. At that point, even though I would have rather put Ishikawa out there all year, I see little role for Ishikawa to play. A back-up first baseman in case Huff gets hurt seems like a bad use of a roster spot to me.

I don’t, really. Sandoval and Bowker can both play first base (not as well as Ishikawa, no, but a backup defensive first baseman isn’t really a very productive use of a roster spot.)

by jctGamer on Apr 15, 2010 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

We don't need Torres

The only thing that he really offers is late-inning defense. His speed is redundant with Velez on the bench. He doesn’t add anything at the plate. His upside is non-existent. He is the only non-pitcher that is completely expendable. Velez may not be popular, but he does have some upside.

I don’t think we really need seven relief pitchers and would be happy to see Medders sent down to learn to suck less. I doubt this will happen. I don’t know if he has options, but I suspect that he does. Brickhead loves having extra pitchers so I don’t see this happening.

Most likely the front office sees this the same way. Torres or Lewis. Hopefully they are smart enough to see what just about any reasonable fan can.

Jaymee Sire is my adopted wife.

right now our back up 2B is Velez. Which on the “awful OF playing out of position depth chart” is slightly better than Nate at 3rd.

Why the Ishikawa hate? Or lack of interest? He’s great on D and a first baseman who is above average makes the whole infield better. AFAIK, it is the one position that can do that.

Does he even have 400 MLB at bats yet?

Jaymee Sire is my adopted wife.

by positiveuphemism on Apr 15, 2010 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t hate Ishikawa. I like him a lot, actually. I wish they’d given him the first base job and hadn’t bothered with Huff. But, as the team is currently constructed, I strongly doubt Ishikawa will get very much playing time over Huff barring an injury. There’s not really much point to having a guy who is more or less going to be used as a defensive replacement at first base on the roster. I think he could potentially pass through waivers and, if he doesn’t, we have a similar player in Fresno and on the 40-man roster.

Another part of the reason I want to get Travis off the team is that Bochy seems to think that if he has a defensive replacement at first base HE MUST USE HIM.

I am an extreme defensive replacement agnostic. There’s a less than 5% chance that any individual player will fuck up any individual play. For most players, it’s much lower than that. That possibility does not seem to ever be worth taking a bat out of a lineup for three innings to me. Defensive value for starters is a very real thing when you’re talking about an entire season. Defensive value for backups playing six innings a week is fucking stupid.

I dunno, if we dumped Torres for Lewis, all of a sudden, our bench is extremely left-handed. Torres clearly isn’t as good of a right handed hitter as he showed last year, but he’s still probably the best one we have (off the bench) until Sanchez comes back and Uribe moves to the bench.

Velez is a switch hitter too, but he’s never shown any ability to be competent vs LHP.

DFA Torres

and keep Lewis.

I know I know, no one else can play CF. Fact is, it’s the beginning of the year and Rowand is going to play 99% of games unless he’s hurt. DFA Torres because I think he has the best chance at slipping through now. Torres hasn’t looked good and I doubt he gets claimed. Stash him to AAA, if Rowand gets hurt then call him up. At that point, figure out what the fuck to do with all the corner OFers and work out some trade without as much pressure as now when everybody knows there is no room for him.

the natural remedy would be to use Schierholtz or (gasp) let Bowker hit lefties. Lewis/DeRosa/Velez share LF, and DeRosa/Uribe/Velez share 2B. I’m not all too against an Ishikawa DFA, then again as you said BORK has his own logic so it will be an interesting decision.

I think people are really underrating Torres and what he brings to the team. Yes, he’s a career minor leaguer, but his minor-league record is good. From 2004-09, he hit around .283/.363/.442 in AAA.

Add in good baserunning, superb defense, and the fact that he’s one of the few RH bench bats on a team full of guys who can’t hit lefties, and he’s a very useful player to have around.

by Evan on Apr 15, 2010 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

An .805 OPS is good for an OF in AAA?

Jaymee Sire is my adopted wife.

by positiveuphemism on Apr 15, 2010 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

With his defense? Sure.

Look at it this way. Last year in the majors, starting center fielders ranged in OPS from .686 to .873. The median was around .775.

What’s the MLE for Torres’s .283/.363/.442? Maybe .260/.330/.410? That’s going to put him ahead of half a dozen starting center fielders (one of them being Aaron Rowand). And that’s just with the bat — he makes up more ground with the glove.

by Evan on Apr 15, 2010 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s a platoon player at best, not that that doesn’t have value. The other OFers are all potential full time players, albeit average players. I’m excluding Velez in this as he’s more of a IF/OF/FBAL player.

Torres right now is a defensive LH masher who isn’t playing much except PHing and not hitting or starting vs. LHP and not hitting. That leaves him as a defensive replacement for LF,RF, and CF. LF? DeRosa, Velez, Bowker, AND Lewis got that covered. RF? Schierholtz and Bowker. CF? Just Rowand (maybe Schierholtz just to get through a game if Rowand injured).

Torres, right now, doesn’t provide much to us as he’s not hitting. Sneak him through and let him find his swing in AAA.

Not really

considering perceived value by the Giants and other teams. Make no mistake I don’t want to get rid of anyone outright, but only find the best guy to sneak to AAA that we don’t need at the moment. The luxury of waiting for him is a luxury we don’t have so take advantage of his lowered perceived value. This isn’t about a Torres SSS, it’s about keeping all 26.

Yeah, but Cust could have refused the assignment and become a free agent. He would have lost the guaranteed contract though, and given the market, I think he made the right financial move.

Ishikawa is useless

Say what you will about velez, at least he can somehat passably play multiple positions.

Say what you will about torres, but he’s our only legitimate plus-defending backup who can play CF.

Ishikawa plays one position, and while he plays it well, he’s not worth his roster spot. Dfa.

My Son was the third most valuable Giant position player by WAR in 2009. A little sad, a little happy.
I predict that history will look kindly on the 09 offseason, even if we were pissed at the time.

This too

Ishi is a nice luxury but we can’t afford it at the moment. Sandoval can slide over there and do fine, and Huff is suprisingly doing passable defense.

Velez vs. Lewis

Call me crazy, but I’m warming to Velez and think he might have a little more value than Lewis.

  • His outfield defense looks likes it’s greatly improved to the point where he no longer scares me out there. Lewis might be better as far as UZR goes, but I’m guessing not by much.
  • He adds the dimension of being able to play 2nd base. Yeah yeah, clank and all that, but the team trusted him there the other day and he made a spectacular play I don’t think anyone else on the team could have made.
  • Lewis would probably out-OBP Velez seven days a week, but Velez may be narrowing the gap. He looks like he has a clue up there now and actually has a plan at the plate. Velez’ ability to hit the ball hard has always been underrated. That deceptive power makes up for some of his inferior ob-base skills when compared to Lewis.
  • He’s a year-and-a-half younger

Velez really has changed my mind about him. I see him as a player who “gets it” and has been working hard to improve his weaknesses. I still hold my breath with him sometimes, but I’m sort of actually kind of enjoying watching him play now.

Reminds me of when I saw Danny Glover at Candlestick. He was just walking around like a normal person. He sat about 2 sections over from me (I had better seats!!!). People were coming up to him to get his autograph and he signed in-between innings (probably because the ushers wouldn’t allow people down the aisle to see him during the innings).

I take it that since I’m at the bottom of this thread, and minutes ago reports came in that Fred Lewis was traded, that there’s already an official FRED IS GONE thread. Do I dare try to get one reply in? It’s been about 15 minutes, the thread’s probably 2,000 deep already.

I think there are at least 5 different fanposts/fanshots/frontpage locations where the “trade” has been discussed.

by Merope on Apr 15, 2010 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Da question is? Will the giants get fair value from Toronto for this trade?

I hope they do, but I doubt it. Giants undervalue their own players, and covet mediocre aging athletes on other teams. I wish Fred much success, I still think he will be a fairly good major league player. Giants seem to make quite a few deals with Toronto, they seem to steal quite a bit of our talent. Luckily we did not trade Timmy for Rios. The fact that Sabean even considered such a move is more than disturbing.
