Minor lines 4-13-10
(Filling in for Steve S tonight.)
Highlights from Tuesday:
Fresno - Brock Bond went 3-for-5 in a loss to Las Vegas.
Richmond - The bullpen buckled down for 7 2/3 innings in a marathon extra-innings game but the Squirrels eventually lost 1-0.
San Jose - Juan Carlos Perez has a big day with his first home run of the year.
Augusta - Ryan Cavan smacks two doubles in a win over Savannah.
AAA: Fresno lost to Las Vegas 2-1
Fresno: 2B Brock Bond - 3-5, 1 SO
Fresno: LF Fred Lewis - 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 SO
Fresno: RF Eddy Martinez-Esteve - 2-2, 1 R, E
Fresno: SP Kevin Pucetas - 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, WP, L (0-1)
Fresno: RP Steve Edlefsen - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO
Las Vegas: 3B Brett Wallace - 2-3, 2B, 1 BB
Kevin Pucetas is still in search of his first win of 2010. The Opening Day starter didn't pitch poorly against the 51s, but the two runs he allowed was enough to get Las Vegas their third win in a row. Pucetas allowed two runs in the third inning via a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk. Fresno pieced together four hits in the fifth inning to get a run. Fred Lewis singled home Eddy Martinez-Esteve. Brock Bond is settling in well as Fresno's leadoff hitter. He had three hits in the loss. Steve Edlefsen rebounded from a bad outing against Reno Apr. 10 where he allowed a run and a hit in one inning. The right-handed reliever threw one almost perfect inning, marred only by a fielding error by Ryan Rohlinger at shortstop.
AA: Richmond lost to Altoona 1-0, 14 innings
Richmond: LF Thomas Neal - 1-5, 2B, BB
Richmond: 3B Conor Gillaspie - 0-4, 2 BB, 2 E
Richmond: SP Mike MacDonald - 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 SO
Richmond: RP Rafael Cova - 2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, WP, L (0-1)
Altoona: 2B Josh Harrison - 3-6, RBI, SO
Richmond and Altoona battled for 14 innings and despite a valiant effort from the Squirrels bullpen (7 2/3 innings, one run and five hits allowed, eight strikeouts), the Curve prevailed. Josh Harrison delivered the game winning hit for the Curve, one of his three hits on the day. Conor Gillaspie committed his second error of the game, putting the Curve leadoff batter on base. Harrison's single brought home the runner. Altoona starting pitcher Michael Crotta held the Squirrels hitless through five innings and allowed only one hit in his seven innings of work. Pirates top prospect Danny Moskos contributed two innings with one hit and one walk in relief. Darren Ford made an excellent throw from center to double Gorkys Hernandez off first in the 13th inning.
A+: San Jose defeated Visalia 7-2
San Jose: 1B Brandon Belt - 1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, HBP, 2 SB
San Jose: RF Francisco Peguero - 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBO, 1 SO
San Jose: CF Juan Carlos Perez - 2-4, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI
San Jose: SP Aaron King - 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 2 HR, W (1-0)
Visalia: 1B Paul Goldschmidt - 3-4, 1 R, 2B, HR, RBI
San Jose exacted revenge on Visalia for defeating them Monday night in a 7-2 win Tuesday. Aaron King pitched five innings for the Giants and earned his first win of the year, although he served up back-to-back solo home runs in the fourth inning. The home runs weren't a problem for the Giants as the hitters busted out in the first inning. Francisco Peguero drove in two runs in his first at-bat on a base hit and Juan Carlos Perez came up with a hit to score Ryan Lormand. Perez connected for his first home run of the year in the seventh inning. Brandon Belt is taking advantage of playing time at first base by hitting well. Belt doubled in two runs in the first inning rally. Ehire Adrianza was in the lineup as the designated hitter and he was hitless with one walk.
A-: Augusta defeated Savannah 8-3
Augusta: 2B Ryan Cavan - 3-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, SB
Augusta: C Tommy Joseph - 0-2, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 SO, HBP
Augusta: 1B Luke Anders - 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 SO
Augusta: 3B Chris Dominguez - 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, SB, HBP
Augusta: SP Jeremy Toole - 3 1/3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, E
Savannah: SS Wilmer Flores - 3-5, 1 R
A four run fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and cemented the win for the GreenJackets. All the offense in the fifth inning came with two outs. Ryan Lollis singled and stole second, then came home on Luke Anders' second double of the game. Anders drove in three runs Tuesday night and he scored twice. The Sand Gnats were wild in the inning, with an error and a wild pitch facilitating two runs for the GreenJackets. Ryan Cavan picked up three hits, including an RBI double in the sixth inning. Tommy Joseph went hitless for the fourth straight game, but he worked two walks and scored twice. Jeremy Toole did not last past the fourth inning, allowing three hits and committing a throwing error on a pickoff play at first in the frame. Jose Valdez (6'7" 250, btw) earned the win in relief by throwing 1 2/3 innings of nearly flawless ball. He allowed one hit and one walk with five strikeouts. Wilmer Flores had three hits in the game. New York sent Flores to the Futures Game last summer and he was an All-Star in the Appalachian League in 2008.

Where did this McDonald kid come from?
Also, it’s good to see Bond doing well as a leadoff hitter with his OBP skills, though I’m somewhat surprised that McBryde isn’t leading off with his speed.
One more thing-I know its SSS but Ryan Lormand seems to be doing well in every game-could he be a sleeper (deep sleeper) INF prospect or is it just because he’s a 24 yr old in A ball?

Hell yeah!
4 K’s, 1 walk. That’s progress for Aaron King NERDZ
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
McFAQ for all you newcomers out there.
I like King
not as much as Grant-but I like his arm. I think if he moved to the bullpen he could have a Runzler type ascension.

I think LOOGY is his most likely path to the majors
Although if he could turn into a 1-1.5 WAR starting pitcher, that would be wonderful. I know I know, I have such high expectations.

LOOGY is probably most likely
that said he definitely has a high ceiling. He’s very intriguing.

Baron, you mentioned Belt’s playing time, and DrB said something about Mazzola being out. What do you know about Josh Mazzola’s situation? Is he injured?

IIRC he is injured
I forget what he injured but he went on the DL at the same time as Biery.

Yep, he’s out for a while with a separated shoulder. Biery will be back sooner than Mazzola, as his injury isn’t as bad.

Madison Bumgarner goes tonight for Los Grizzles de Fresno.
If Jax is the second best catcher in the organization what does that make Geraldo Posey? Save the Legs
If Jacks is the second best catcher in the organization, Buster Posey will be behind the plate well into his forties.
"Why not trade Bumgarner for some banger stud?" - sfgiants.com commenter or online porn ad? You be the judge!
Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis
Jacks
1st round pick who’s put up some good numbers to start the season and already has two dingerz!.
2010 .438/.550/.625/1.175
Plus with all of his minor league experience he may be able to catch major league pitching, unlike Posey who needs more experience catching major league pitching and so consequently is in Fresno.

A mere rec is not enough
Excellent work off the bench from BvCE.
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Brock Bond seems like an interesting player – not that I’m expecting big things, but just based on his BABIP, it’s been around .380 almost his entire minor league career. That must mean something – either he hits a ton of line drives, or he squares up the ball really well, so even grounders are hit hard enough to make it out of the infield more often then not. I would expect someone like that to have at least a little power, though, and it looks like he’s hit 3 doubles in his lifetime

He has a BABIP well over .800 on his line drives. I wonder if that’s normal?
Unfortunately he doesn’t hit all that many. He hits a ton of grounders, more than almost anyone in baseball.
There’s probably some selection bias — a ball that falls in might be more likely to be termed a line drive than one that’s caught.
Interesting article on the unreliability of these numbers at BP today: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=10523
I looked at his minor league stats a while back, and they are eerily similar to David Eckstein’s. That’s not particularly inspiring, since there’s some question of whether his defense can even stick at second, never mind moving over to SS.
Why the bagging on his defense? Looking around the worst fielding pct I can find on him is .960 which while not gold glove is certainly not Velezesq.
I’m just curious if someone here has seen something in his play that gives the impression he has a clank for a glove. I do think he has a funky short arm throwing motion but he seems accurate and plenty of arm for second.

"GM Jack Zduriencik is one of the sharper tools in the shed. Elsewhere in that shed, Brian Sabean continues to pound screws into bricks with a garden rake."
I believe the knock is his range. That’s based on scouting reports; I’ve personally never seen the kid play. The David Eckstein comparison, though, is meant to highlight that his lack of power will probably prevent him from being an everyday second baseman in the majors, unless he can bring his .400 OBP with him from AA to the majors (an exceedingly unlikely feat).

That’s a Craig Biggio-type line there. I remember a few years back, Biggio had a game that was something like 0-0, 3 R, 3 BB, 2 HBP.
Wow.
Cool! How in the heck did you find that? I thought about looking for it to get the numbers right, but I figured it’d take forever.
I just checked his gamelogs and sorted by HBP, figuring he didn’t get hit more than twice too often (sort of wrong, 20 times!).
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
NIce. I tried to duplicate your feat, though, and couldn’t figure out how to get a player’s career game logs. On Baseball Reference they have game logs, but I could only get one season at a time. Is there a way to trick it into giving me all seasons?
Not that I could figure out, I just went season by season. You could also do the game finder, with HBP>=2 and sorted by ABs.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
