OT: MLB the Show 10 'Player Potential'
This is more of a rant about something that i have just discovered that is annoying me, that I think will also ignore some of you..
So in MLB the Show every player in the game is given a grade (A, B, C, D or F) for the potential of how they will perform through the next years. This is important as there are alot of features in the game that can easily span over serveral season. Road to the Show allows you to have a 20 years career in the majors, and as you evolve over the years, so does the league, with players getting better, getting worse, and retiring. Also, Franchise mode allows you to control the MLB club of your choice, as well as its AAA and AA team, over a span of several seasons. Players evolve here aswell, again based on their 'Player Potential' grade that was given to them by the game creators.
Now for the first time, I have been going through and looking at these grades as I am about to start a Road to the Show player, and I wanted to see if everything made sense, for how someone with common sense would predict players to evolve, from as soon as 2011 and beyond.
Well looking through the Giants, I instantly disagreed with most grades given out.
Cain was given a C, apparently set to drop in performance dramatically
Zito given a B, apparently set to be better then Cain in a few years
Wilson given a C
Pablo given a B
Posey was given an A, which was one of the few in the game I agree with
J.Sanchez a D
Runzler an F(!)
Bowker a D
Bengie a B
And Lincecum a B
It kind of annoys me that the best pitcher in the game, who is quite young, is graded to drop off as soon as this year, while he has given zero reason for one to think so. Also, to compare to other players throughout the league, and how the games creators feel their performances will improve or decrease as the years go on.. Jorge Posada A, Mariano River A, Omar Vizquel A(!), Hideki Matsui A, Josh Beckett A, Alfonso Soriano A(only getting better, am i right), Ichiro A,
(Also, Ryan Zimmerman D, Felix Hernandez C, Ian Kinsler D, David Wright F, Evan Longoria C)
How is it possible that Ichiro, is predictted to remain consistently a star into his 40, and Tim and Cain are not, into their late 20's? This annoys me because their grade is unalterable. So when I wish to play then game, in a few seasons time, every time, Tim has an ERA of 4. While Soriano, WHO SUCKS NOW, is doing fine.

If you download the new rosters, everything should be fixed. I think Cain, Lincecum, and Panda are all A potential. Apparently there was a miscommunication somewhere at the last moment that broke a ton of ratings.
(But if you play rtts, this makes it way easier to break in)
Baseball video games are notoriously bad about these kind of things. With as much involvement that companies have with companies like ESPN and STATS, it’s surprising that they don’t get actual sports analysts involved in the development of games.
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Well I doubt its that they dont have the appropriate stats, its much more likely that their logic linking from a player to whatever data structure used to store the data is flawed (hence they know its a bug and its fixable). You would be amazed at the amount of data that is used even in a simple browser based game. I cant even begin to imagine how complex something like “The Show” is.
Fine Steven. You keep hitting .400 and Ill keep calling you 'Nick'.
Actually I have a pretty good idea about the amount of data that goes into a browser based game. I work on one.

Well, I don’t program it, but I’ve seen what goes on behind the scenes.

I'm in 2017 in The Show now
so uh…I guess this doesn’t really apply to me. Also my current AA infield is Adrian Gonzalez, Rickie Weeks, Jose Reyes and David Wright
Adopted Giant: Mike Krukow.
Grab Some Pine, Meat
Kevin Frandsen: Better than any SS on the Giants roster
Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010
Yeah
My farm system is actually pretty bad but I figured those guys would be solid stopgaps. Also they collectively cost under 200K

How could you let him go?! Trade Wright to get him back.

Question for The Show players out there: do you find Road to the Show fun? It seems to me you spend most of your time practicing, trying to improve your character, which is what I’ve found with all of those types of modes (whether it’s Madden, NCAA football, The Show, etc). Am I doing it wrong, or is that really what the mode is – going through drills over and over? It just gets so repetitive so quickly for me….
I don’t. I find it frustrating too how long the games take and the load times and all that. It seems to take forever to improve my player to make the majors too. I know that in real life it takes a long time, but it shouldn’t take me just as long in real life.
Yeah that’s kind of how I feel, tons of loading, takes a lot of time, gets repetitive quickly….I haven’t enjoyed it yet.

I’d recommend playing as a starting pitcher. Less load times, as you’re only having to load in once to pitch multiple innings. Seasons go by pretty quick, compared to being a hitter.
I had a LOT of fun with my starter in 09.

As for the original topic, a patch came out within like a week of the game’s release that fixed MOST of the player potentials. There are still a few players here or there that are kinda bad, but the makers of the game have a pretty good relationship with fans online to field their concerns and comments and make fixes accordingly. Lincecum is now an A, and I think Cain is at least a B or A. Not that these potentials matter in the long run IMO in dynasty. If someone’s ratings go down too fast you can always edit them back up.
