I saw the link went to twitter and I was worrying Wheeler made some jackass tweet. So, reading that was actually rather relieving.

I find it hard to say the Giants should have drafted “so-and-so” when it comes to the MLB draft because it’s not like anyone here truly knows much about these high school prospects(or even the college prospects) outside of a few vague lines written by guys that aren’t working for MLB front offices. It’s not like the NFL draft, where everyones seen most of the prospects play on tv every week. The only instance I would get pissed is if they make a very obvious penny pinching pick, but Giants haven’t really shown that tendency in a while.

I'm just saying it from a personal preference

Signability was such a huge concern I have no problem with the Wheeler pick. I was utterly convinced Matzek wasn’t going to sign for anything less than waaay over-slot, and I was afraid either the Giants wouldn’t go there or they would; neither of those are particularly good options. Sure, it’s easy to say how he would have been a much better pick NOW, but if we had drafted him and not been able to sign him (or if Colorado hadn’t able to sign him for that matter) I’m sure you wouldn’t think he was a better pick.

Goodbye, Steven Johnson, we hardly knew ye. Seriously, that was short.

You know, I was thinking this

But I forgot to include it. Apparently Matzek wanted money somewhere in the range of $6m-$9m.

Disagree, going over slot is still a great option. Spending money through the draft is the single most efficient way to spend your payroll, even if you’re going over slot.

Mike Leake, picked 2 picks after Wheeler, started for the Reds today, without ever pitching in the minors, he needs his own wcw around here lamenting the Giants failure to pick him.
