Spring Training Power Poll
Ranks the teams 1-30. Giants clock in at #14. I get the impression it'd be higher if there was any pop in the lineup.

I disagree – I think was is fine. In this context, I think pop is singular so was is appropriate.

It’s not plural, it’s the subjunctive.

The subjunctive noun clause? Hmm…you may have a point there. So the plural “were” would be correct here? Do tell…

See here…
A verb is in the subjunctive mood when it expresses a condition which is doubtful or not factual.
A Giants lineup having pop is certainly doubtful at best.

I don’t understand why the Padres have a chance at contention because of the division they play in. Did I fall asleep for five years and 2009 is long gone, or did the Giants just go 88-74 and finish THIRD in the division? That’s AL East levels of competition; we didn’t make the playoffs, but finished with a better record than the Twins, who did. I get that this guy is obviously a huge Yankees fan, so his world begins and ends on that island, but seriously man, look at the numbers from last year; there are four playoff contenders in the NL West (Reynolds, Montero, Drew, and LaRoche have something to say about Upton being the only good hitter in the Arizona lineup).
God, that automatic dismissal of the NL West as a good division annoys the crap out of me; going back to ‘02 (because that’s when Yahoo’s standings stop), there have been two years, ‘05 and ’08, when the division winner wasn’t 15+ games above .500, and the NL West consistently produces multiple 90 game winners.
NL West? Aren’t all their teams not on the east coast or even in the midwest? Wow, they must suck.

I gave up on the article after the entry on the Pirates, which was downright insulting to Pirates fans and ignores how a team tries to rebuild by trading away veterans who won’t be around when the team actually has a shot at being good. At least, that’s what I hope the Pirates are doing. I’d like them to be good again.
The article seems dumb to me.

This was particularly stupid
In the last few years, Pittsburgh has gotten rid of Xavier Nady, Jason Bay and a few others. Is it going to be Andrew McCutchen this season? Who knows.
I know. They won’t be trading McCutchen. He is the guy they are building around.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Yeah, seems like he’s a fan who assumes the Yankees will just trade for/sign any player they want. I hate it when Yankees fans say things like, “Oh, Mauer, yeah we’ll sign him.” When they say it about Lincecum I want to smother them with spam. The meat, not the mail, though that would work too.

Quote from last year’s power ranking:
Aside from Adrian Gonzalez, the Arizona Diamondbacks just don’t have many other good players on their roster.
That is hilarious.
I bet the Diamondbacks wish this guy could control reality through his power rankings.

The Red Sox are 1b and the Yankees are 1. Shouldn’t the Yankees be 1a in this scenario?
