McCovey Chronicles "fans" can't stand it

To prove how hateful and unappreciative the misanthropes at McCovey Chronicles are, I just did a search for "Bengie Molina" on this site.  Knowing that Molina (who all MCC manthropes despise) had a great game today in Scottsdale, I wanted to see how many so-called Giants fans on this site actually had something positive to say about Molina (or Brian Sabean, for that matter, who re-signed Molina).

The "Bengie Molina" search returned the following stats:

  • 114 Stories
  • 189 Fan Posts
  • 54 Fan Shots

That's a total of 2,586 hits.  And guess what?  Not one single word about today's heroics.  Surprise, surprise, surprise, Seargent Carter.  Them's crickets chirping.

So let me be the first (and probably ONLY) true Giants fan on this site who will give Brian Sabean, Bengie Molina and Juan Uribe the props they deserved today:

  • Bengie Molina went 3-for-3 today with 2 RBI and a home run.  (Buster Posey, by the way, was 0-for-2 and continues to seek his first hit of the spring.)
  • Juan Uribe belted a towering 2-run bomb to left today and finished with 3 RBI.
  • Brian Sabean re-signed Uribe and Molina this past off-season.  True story.
  • The Giants are 3-0 and have the best record in baseball right now.

Yes, I know.  It's spring training.  The games don't count.  The hitters are ahead of the pitchers.  The Arizona air is dry.  Blah blah blah.  Just admit it, MCC haters.  You can't stand it when Sabean looks right and you look wrong.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Uhh

1. Going 3-3 in a spring training game does not qualify as “heroics”. That’s absurd.

2. If you go to the gameday thread after Bengie’s HR, there’s someone who posts “B $$$” and a gif of Bengie’s head on some fat dude riding a bike. That’s pretty typical of this site, and stuff that doesn’t show up when you search for “Bengie Molina”. No one is going to post, “I particularly enjoyed that Bengie Molina home run”.

3. This is a waste of my time and I’m going to sleep.

Yeah, I agree with this. Although Bengie gets a lot of abuse in fan shots and fan posts, we’re all Giants fans, and he gets lots of love during game day threads when he does something well. There’s nothing wrong with seeing all the warts in his game, and wanting the team to move on, especially when the best prospect you have plays the same position. Whether fair or not, Bengie is going to take the heat because we feel management made the wrong decision.

No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

Obviously

the incredibly unequal sample sizes here carry about as much weight as going 3-3 in a spring game, but just for fun:

Bengie Molina: 1 walk every 25.8 PA’s
Tim Lincecum: 1 walk every 16.8 PA’s.

BUT BENJI MONLIA HITZ MAD DINGERZ AND MAKES RUN BATTED INZ.

No, it’s “know it alls”. “Know it all” is an expression, which is then pluralized to indicate more than one, so the s goes at the end, while “run” in “runs batted in” is the noun, so that’s pluralized.

keep in mind that Bengie is traditionally a quick starter

but than tails off as the season goes on… that’s what happens when you’re an obese, 30 something year old catcher. In 2007 Bengie was hitting .307 through the first two months of the season, but he ended up hitting .276 for the year. In 2008 Bengie was hitting .328 after two months, and ended up hitting .292 (still a good average, but a dropoff nonetheless.) In 2009, Bengie was hitting .310 with 7 homeruns after the first 27 games of the season. He ended up at .265 with 20 homeruns.
While I’m not as big as a Bengie hater as most people on MCC, and I give him props for having a good day yesterday, putting any value into one Spring Training game this early in the year is completely moronic. And are you really going to make fun of Posey for not having a hit in 4 ab’s? What’s next, are you gonna write off Lincecum for having an 18 e.r.a in 1 inning?

This kind of fanpost neglect certainly does happen. In my experience, it happens in exactly these kinds of circumstances: some troll/misanthrope makes a condescending post about how the members of this blog are “fucking idiots” and then goes to great length to detail why. When the “fucking idiot” members of this blog post their – mostly cogent – rebuttals, the original poster is nowhere to be found. What a stratagem!

The atmosphere of the GIants sucks. Bench the rookie and play the vet. Even if he sucks. and Even if the rookie is raking. Same thing happened to Bowker; mashed and raked in the walks in AAA and got called up. Then he tried to be Barry Bonds so he could start more…and then failed.
I get it that there’s a hierarchy or what not in baseball, but it crumbles when “rookies” like Posey or Bowker are ready.

Everyone's opinions are valid...

…some are just more valid than others.

Hell, just take this as a positive. Posey will start the year in the minors and hopefully avoid Super Two status. Pleasantly ignore the fact that playing Bengie over Posey makes the team worse in the interim.

Please tell me we have moved past the dark ages of post hoc ergo propter hoc.

by Yeti Monster on Mar 6, 2010 11:04 AM PST reply actions

Yes this is pretty much like the only real reason why Posey shouldn’t play. But if he turns out to be Lincecum-status, then pay him his money. I hate reading how Molina is quite possibly the best catcher SF has ever had

Hey Fred Lewis, remember Mother's Day?

by anotherbadexcuseguitar on Mar 6, 2010 11:05 AM PST up reply actions

You know the more I think about it, the more this might not make sense. The Giants are paying Bengie $4.5 (possibly $6.5) million this year to postpone Posey’s super two status. Since $1 today > $1 tomorrow, Posey would have to make more in two years than Bengie makes this year for the trade off to work.

True, there are a lot of other factors, which I will conveniently ignore (such as the effect of Posey’s Super Two salary on his remaining arb years and any difference in production between Bengie and Posey this year). But assuming a 3% discount rate, Posey would have to earn > $4.8 (Bengie only makes $4.5 this year) or > $6.9 million as a Super Two.

In 2009, the average Super Two salary for that year was $1.7mm (multi year deals for Super Two eligible players in 2009 was $3mm). Even if you factor in a rising salary number, if Posey performs in line with the average Super Two player he should make less than the break even numbers above.

Now hopefully, Posey goes apeshit and wins an MVP or two (all Giants rookies win coveted awards their first two full seasons, right?) and commands much more in arbitration. But it looks like from a $ saving point of view keeping Bengie instead of Posey doesn’t make sense. So the move doesn’t make baseball or financial sense. Awesome. Way to impress, Sabean.

Please tell me we have moved past the dark ages of post hoc ergo propter hoc.

The theory is this: Bengie Molina is one of the worst hitters in baseball. My evidence is this: statz, and the fact that since he’s been a Giant, the Giants have been one of the worst offensive teams in baseball. So if he’s good, shouldn’t that show up in the number of runs the Giants score? Who is responsible for the Giants being so awful at scoring?

I gotta admit, for all the flaws he had, I loved Money in 08. But in 09 he sucked ass (no pics for evidence), and he’s not likely to improve as he gets older. Re-signing him wouldn’t have been a terrible move for a 2-month stop gap until Posey is (financially a better bargain after the next two seasons) ready. But a 4.5 million dollar contract with plate appearance incentives with this manager is assinine.

Or in your words, I’m not a true fan because I thought this through.

HUMM BABY 4 HAITI TO HELP AID RECOVERY EFFORTS Non-profit organization announces launch

March 2, 2010 — In an endeavor to boost the worldwide relief effort for earthquake victims in Haiti, a new non-profit organization Humm Baby 4 Haiti, has been launched, along with its accompanying Web site www.hummbaby4haiti.org.

Humm Baby 4 Haiti, along with its partner organization, Partners in Health, allows people to donate online and directly support the recovery efforts in Haiti. Humm Baby 4 Haiti is planning a relief trip to the island nation later this year.

Founder Salvador Serrano, a San Francisco native and UC Davis graduate, launched this non-profit organization after being deeply affected by the devastation caused by the massive quake that struck Haiti in January. With vivid memories of the destruction from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in the Bay Area, Serrano formed Humm Baby 4 Haiti to encourage Northern Californians and baseball fans to bolster the relief efforts.

For more information, or to schedule an interview with Salvador Serrano, please call (800) 423-3950 or e-mail donate@hummbaby4haiti.org

HI

Hola Im sorry I didnt see it. I Have been trying to inform the critics that are well within their rights to be skeptical.

by Humm Baby 4 Haiti on Mar 8, 2010 8:39 AM PST up reply actions

Don’t feel like a jerk. There’s zero need for yet another organization to raise money for Haiti. Give to DWB or Partners in Health or Red Cross or some other established org that you know isn’t going to waste your money.

by Evan on Mar 8, 2010 8:34 AM PST up reply actions

Waiste Money?

Now that is a bit of a stretch. First of all we are not soliciting donations. We are selling shirts to raise money because of the people being skeptical. We are providing a physical product ( a shirt) that you get with your purchase, until we are able to secure the official federal tax designation so we can provide the tax rightoff to those who want to contribute but yes, if you feel more comfortable giving to Partners in Health or the Cross that is also wonderful. We are trying to work with the smaller organizations like Light Ministries which has been in Haiti for over 20 years and we are also working together with partners in Health. However, our mission is to aid in the rebuilding efforts later this year with habitat for humanity. However, they cannot pay for everyone so our goal is to be able to sponsor and provide those individuals that do not have the money but have the time to donate.

by Humm Baby 4 Haiti on Mar 8, 2010 8:50 AM PST up reply actions

Wait…you want to give to Haiti right? And you want to give as much as possible to Haiti right? So how is the overhead of producing a t-shirt not short changing Haiti? That seems like if we donate to you we would be “wasting” the 3-5 dollars it takes to make the t-shirt. If you don’t want to waste money, then why don’t you direct us to these small charities so we can donate directly?

Matt Graham is an anagram for .... why don't you ask the scrabble expert!

by say hey nation on Mar 8, 2010 9:02 AM PST up reply actions

Great point matt

Matt I completely agree with you but you are not like most peopl who see it from that business point of view.

Yes the shirt will cost between 3-5 depending on teh quantity.

I could also go directly to China or India and get it for less but then we can have an entire debate about supporting local and domestic businesses versus outsourcing this out. Or you can also see that I am supporting a local small business owner while also helping Haiti, proving giants fan a shirt and getting everyone involved versus just sending a text to the Red cross and have no idea or input of what they are doing except from what the media outlets tell you or going directly to there site. However, who will do that? Not many people Matt. Though I see your points it is clear that cant see eye to eye on this and have fundamental philosophical differences. I have named the organizations but you would raise the same questions you did with mine. At least with mine you are getting a shirt to support the cause like I will with this entire baseball season. Its only spring training Matt. I am not trying to gain your support now but in time I hope that when I do get more attention from the media and when we get our IRS 501c3, then you might see us in a different light. At this time I had already anticipated the critics and the skeptics but it comes with the terrain. It took only one bad apple to ruin it for the people that are trying to do good in this world. I guess the notion of using sports might in fact backfire on me but only time will tell. Thank you for all of your constructive feedback. I hope we keep in touch. I have provided my contact information which is to the public to answer anything offline via my cell phone or email. Feel free to contact me.

I wish Bengie all the luck in the world and hope he does good this year, I just wish that I was wishing (lot’s of wishes apparently) for all this to happen for the Mets and not the Giants. Response to Scam/ Spambot

1. You are absolutely correct. At this time we do not have the 501c(3) tax exemption status which should be awarded by the start of the baseball season. However, due to this fact we do not have the ability to solicit or accept donations, so at this time we are ONLY selling shirts to raise money in the interim. On the site you would notice that you DO NOT have the ability to donate. The only way you can donate is buy purchasing a shirt through paypal.
2. In regards to the artwork on the shirt concern, we are in no violation of intellectual property rights. There is no trademark infringement, including the humm baby which the giants let expire back in 1993.
We have done our due diligence, but I completely understand and respect your concerns. My non- profit is legitimate and has only good intentions. I believe in full transparency and I would be more than willing to email you a copy of our articles of incorporations. In addition, you will see me in person this entire baseball season. Hey buddy, what is this relief mission you planning? Baseballs for everyone? Water for everyone? Why would I donate to you, who would have a much higher overhead in actually getting to Haiti as opposed to UNICEF, The Red Cross or numerous other entities who are already there?

Also for that matter, why would I donate to just Haiti? Why are they more in need? Don’t you think that these larger organization are better equipped for judging who needs help the most? (Sorry that is just a pet peeve of mine for natural disasters, I would rather donate to a charity/NPO that works in many countries and is willing to help world wide.)

I am sorry for what happened to Haiti and I hope they are able to rebound without losing many more lives. I also hope that you make a difference when you go, I just won’t be helping you go. Its like sports betting, if you have to bet on a 20-1 odds or 4-1 odds which one would you pick? I would go with the 4-1 and unfortunately for you I see you as the 20-1 odds of actually doing any good. Good luck and all the more power to you if make a difference I will be rooting for you!

Wait a minute...
Also for that matter, why would I donate to just Haiti?

Regardless of what charities you choose to support, I’m not sure this is a fair question.

If I asked someone, for example, to support my Breast Cancer Walk and they said, “Why should I donate to just breast cancer? Isn’t heart disease deserving too?” I’d think that was a pretty dickish response.

I admit it is. I was trying to say that I feel in adequate to say that Haiti needs the help more than Chile or some other natural or man made disaster (Darfur) and that I would rather than make the decision myself, defer to someone who I believe is knowledgeable and fair. I don’t know what the situation in Haiti is like, but I also don’t know anything about the situation in Chile, or Turkey. So what I was trying to say is that, yes I would donate to Haiti who am I to say they need it more? All I know is what the sensationalist media lets me know. I only mentioned it because he said “Chile has taken the spotlight from Haiti but this is the exact reason why I want to make sure that people don’t forget.”

I feel the same way about breast cancer (admittedly I have not been affected by breast cancer) but that gets into fuzzy territory b/c breast cancer research affects more than breast cancer.

Im sorry to hear of your financial troubles. i am in the same boat. I am unemployed and have been now for close to a year. However, I have gone back to school and found my true calling as an educator. I am passionate about teaching and have decided to become a teacher. However, I was deeply moved by the events of Haiti and decided to take action. One way or another I will make my way to Haiti. I agree with you that it will be a long and hard journey but nothing is free or easy in this life. So like a wise man said, lead , follow, or get out of the way. I have chosen to lead. No neutral positions exist. Not to act is to act by default. Most reconstructionist agree that the hottest place in hell is reserved for those in times of moral crisis remain neutral. What will you decide?

Can you make that a reservation for two? I would like some company while I’m in hell.

i chose Haiti for all of the reasons that I have already made clear. To abandon my cause because Chile is more relevant because it just happened is just in the sense that yes they also need help but is not practical for my cause. Would I give anything to be omnipresent where I could warp from one country to one country in a blink of an eye, for sure, but Im not a superhero. Im just one man trying to make a difference in the poorest nation in the western hemisphere which just suffered a massive earthquake wiping out close to 300,000 dead. They are still pulling corpses out 2 months later. Unfortunately, I am not trying to reduce the tragic event that occurred in Chile to be less than Haiti, but for someone who seems to be putting everything into the context of business with dollars and sense lets break down. Chile to date has less than 1000 deaths to Haiti’s 300,000. The infrastructure in Haiti can we agree is not as sophisticated as Chile. Chile has throughout its history as a nation suffered these earthquakes, and in fact has the largest in history to hit their country. Not to mention that Chile has 8.5 million internet users (50% of the population) which is almost the entire country of Haiti. i bring that to your attention because that means that 8.5 million chileans have the resources to have a computer and internet and landline telephone while 80% of the population 7.6 million haitians live in poverty. So though I sympathize with Chile and there a worthy cause you tell me who needs more help?

by Humm Baby 4 Haiti on Mar 8, 2010 10:47 AM PST up reply actions

We all have to make decisions on where and how we give to those in need.

Personally, I donated much more to Haiti

I quick glance at the impact made me think Haiti needs it more:

Chile death toll: 500+
Haiti death toll 200,000+

When consider that Hait iwas already probably the most poverty-stricken country in the hemisphere while Chili is a relatively prorperous country, it seemed it pretty easy.

by Goofus on Mar 8, 2010 11:15 AM PST up reply actions

As I have I, despite my limited resources. I told myself I wish I can do more and I came up with HUMM BABY 4 HAITI.

I think Chile is in need but my own personal stance is that I think Haiti needs it more. Does it mean that I wont give to Chile, absolutely not. However if Habitat for Humanity gave me the choice to go to Haiti or Chile, I would have to go to Haiti based on the obvious points that you make. However, maybe it was my own ignorance to assume that was common knowledge.

We are new so I am not surprised by peoples hesitation but come opening day my hope is that this will not be the case.

I apologize for not taking the time to make our mission clearer but I put out our press release to over 100 media outlets, including KNBR, which we are working to get on their community board. The person responsible for this at KNBR is Lyell Perry who happens to be in Arizona at the time and we are waiting fro her to get back so we can get some positive endorsements and sponsorships to avoid situations such as being considered a fraudulent charity, in which we are not.

I am a native San Franciscan, born a raised in San Francisco, who grew up on Mission and Army. Yes I said Army because as most of you know Caesar Chavez was previously named Army Street. I attended Archbishop Riordan High School, but ended up graduating from San Francisco Christian School. My mission for this charity was in response to the horrific earthquake that hit Haiti.

After hearing that many Haitians were having amputation being performed without anesthetic and that the only pain medication being given to patients was ibuprofen the last straw. I tried to volunteer my efforts to any organization to physically go to Haiti, but hey all declined. They were only taking medical personnel and would not pay for transporting anyone outside of the medical field. I was discouraged and felt defeated. However, it was only two days later when the words of a man I barely knew interrupted me when we were discussing college basketball. Connecticut had just killed Texas and I began to move away from basketball to baseball when he turned and said to me, "Sal I don’t mean any disrespect and I love sports, don’t get me wrong, but I try to avoid talking too much about it because if we only took a small percentage of the time we spend arguing, debating, and not to mention all the money, if we took that energy and shifted it in another direction, we could solve most of the worlds problems."

Those powerful words struck me like lightening. He was absolutely right. So when I got back home I started to think how I could use sports to continue to raise awareness and raise funding for smaller organization like Light Ministries, which has worked in Haiti for over 20 years. More importantly, as a native San Franciscan who experienced and survived the 1989 earthquake, tried to connect our cohort earthquake experience along with Haiti, but also use one of the most memorable years of the Giants with Hum Baby, not to mention probably the best year in Bay Area Sports. Both the Giants and the A’s were in the World Series, the 49ers won the Super Bowl, the Warriors with RUN TMC were making awesome McDonalds commercials, give me the Chris and Tim burger, not the Tim and Chris burger.

Anyway I always admired Roger Craig for what he brought to the organization and his genuine positive outlook on life. His Humm Baby attitude brought a bunch of young average players to play together and truly believe that they were going to win it all, damn candy Maldonado sliding and losing the ball in the lights in game 6, we would have killed the twins but I give him a pass because of his best superman punch that I think Jose Oquendo is still feeling this day. My point is I want to be play the roger Craig role and gather all of San Francisco and all the fans to join me o show all of baseball ad the world that were leading the way and that we haven’t forgot about Haiti. We live in a post bonds and post steroid era. I live in Chicago and they hate the giants and they hate bonds. However, it gives me no greater joy to wear a Will Clark Jersey when I walk into the unfriendly confines of Wrigley. Here is the opportunity for us to not only say we are the greatest city in the world but demonstrate it with action.

However, they cannot pay for everyone so our goal is to be able to sponsor and provide those individuals that do not have the money but have the time to go.
