* * Source: Jermaine Dye's Agent Contacted San Francisco Giants about One-Year Deal
A source in the Tampa Bay Rays organization says that outfielder Jermaine Dye is backing off his demand for a contract that promises he’ll get a starting job. The Rays are the only team making that promise, so Dye’s agent Bob Bry is reportedly looking elsewhere and might have contacted the San Francisco Giants.
I'm really hoping this is complete bullshit and he's just trying to get more money out of the Rays

meh
as long as he doesn’t play much I wouldn’t throw a fit about him taking Eugenio’s roster spot. Sure I’d rather see Bowker or Lewis get those at-bats, but CHONE projects him to have about the same value in WAR as Aaron Rowand, Mark DeRosa, or Freddy Sanchez next season. The part where Bochy might play him everyday is reason for concern, but I think its likely all the anti-Dye-ness might be overstated now. I won’t love the signing if it were to somehow happen, but I won’t have a hard time rooting for Dye in a Giants uniform either.
Thing A
Your outfield would be DeRosa, Rowand and Dye from left to right. Not very good and old.
The Giants offseason moves - "meh"
Proud father of 2-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, who could do whatever he wants to do.
But Dye as a bench player is fairly worthless since he can’t play anything but LF (and even that is a stretch.) And Dye as a starter would be incredibly depressing.

He might not take Eugenio’s roster spot.
The Kids: Lewis, Posey, Sandoval, Bowker, Schierholtz, Frandsen, Ishikawa, Amezaga
Current Team: Rowand, Sanchez, DeRosa, Sandoval, Huff, Molina, Renteria, Schierholtz
The Kids' CHONE WAR projection= 12.7
Current Team's CHONE WAR projection= 12.6
Velez isn't the problem

Jermaine: the fact that you remain unsigned is not collusion. You’re an old outfielder whose good offense is negated by your awful, horrible, terrible defense, and you want a starting job for $5M+ in a market saturated with DH types (in other words, players exactly like you). There are only so many roster spots, and your demands mean that GMs can go elsewhere, and they are. You’re not Barry Bonds, shut up.

Only retards care about UZR and those defensive metrics crap.
The infatuation with defense is just an excuse for collusion.
Might as well start Wil Nieves and Adam Everett at every single position.
Yeah, those “retards” include Major League executives and some of the best and brightest in the game.
Tyson…I agree. UZR and all that stuff just serves to make something seem more complicated than it is…and it makes people who come up a formula feel like they understand the game better. They don’t. Thanks.
I hate statements like these. Rather than attempting to understand the metric (he admits earlier he has no idea how it works), he simply pushes it aside.
It’s one thing to dislike a statistic; it’s another thing to dislike a statistic just because you’re too lazy to bother learning about it. A part of me wants to reach out and explain things to them, but I doubt that they’d be willing to listen or that they’d be open to the idea that UZR is a useful tool.

You could replace “statistic” with “black person” or “homosexual” or “foreigner”, and it still works to explain so much of the baseless hate and distrust in this world.

I replied to one of his comments
I doubt it’ll make a difference, but I figured I might as well try.
@Ted: The problem I have with this line of thinking is that our eyes are very much subjected to bias and limited samples. Unless you’re working for BIS or STATS, chances are you’re not tracking a player every single second of every single game. You can evaluate players on your own team to a certain extent, but not to defenders of all teams.
If we see a player make a diving play (or multiple diving plays), we assume that the play is difficult. In actuality, it’s quite possible that his range is so poor that he HAS to dive to make a play- when an average defender at the position would make the same play with ease. Our eyes, unless trained exceptionally well, won’t pick this up.
If these numbers had no merit to them, organizations like the Red Sox, Rays, Mariners, Yankees, etc. wouldn’t be going anywhere near them. But they are. They rely heavily on a combination of scouting and defensive statistics so they can make informed decisions- and if they’re using these numbers (or ones very similar to them), then that indicates superior baseball minds find meaning behind them and that they should be taken seriously.
You’ve admitted that you don’t understand the way UZR works. How can you legitimately criticize something you have no understanding of? I suggest you do the heavy lifting and read up on it. And do it with an open mind. Otherwise you’re not going to absorb any information.
That being said, here’s the two-part primer that started it all:
Part 1: http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/primate_studies/discussion/lichtman_2003-03-14_0/
Part 2: http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/primate_studies/discussion/lichtman_2003-03-21_0/
The methodology has since been cleaned up. But this should get you started.
Is UZR perfect? No, not at all. But it’s an excellent tool and should be taken seriously.

I think it’s just a money grab by the player’s agent. If the Rays are offering a starting job, that’s where he’s going. Besides, nowhere does it say the Giants are interested.

Yeah but what scares me about this
is Sabean could swoop in with a 4.5 million dollar deal and overpay for Dye… Although signing him to the league minimum would be an overpay

Jermaine Dye is backing off his demand for a contract that promises he’ll get a starting job.
In other news, Goofus McPenisbutter is backing off his demand that Jessica Alba guarantees she’ll have sex with him before he’ll consider making the drive all the way to her home.
Proudly adopted Aubrey Huff. You can't beat that!
