MLB 10 The Show for PS3 is great!

Too bad the Giants aren't good on it though, no surprise. But the graphics and presentation are amazing. The first game I played yesterday was Giants vs. Dodgers at AT&T with the new orange uniforms. They actually don't look so bad on the game.

Anyway, some cool player stuff is included. Pablo does his little hop step pre at bat ritual on it. I was pretty impressed. Brian Wilson also crosses his arms and points to the sky after a save.

Giants beat the Dodgers 5-4. Lincecum pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed four unearned runs and just four hits. He struck out nine. A Bill Buckner-type error by Aubrey Huff in the first allowed a run to score and a two-out throwing error by Uribe at short led to three more runs in the eighth.

Mark DeRosa smashed a three-run home run to break a 1-1 tie in the seventh. And I suck at hitting by the way.

Any questions about the game, feel free to ask. Pick it up if you have a PS3.

Other than roster changes, what’s difference from 09 to 10?

by Missing Barry on Mar 3, 2010 11:34 AM PST reply actions

A lot of cool new animations. I’ve only played two games, so I haven’t really seen to many yet. But I saw a fan reach over for a foul ball at AT&T and she fell onto the field. That was pretty funny.

Road to Show has a new catchers mode where you can actually call pitches.

The game just looks nicer too. I’m sure there is a lot of other stuff that I can’t think of.

by Section B, Row 1 on Mar 3, 2010 2:11 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe I’ll check out reviews, doubt I’ll drop $60 on a new game, though. Animations have never done it for me – I see them as an annoyance more than anything. Do you know if I can update my rosters on ’09 to ’10 rosters?

by Missing Barry on Mar 3, 2010 2:27 PM PST up reply actions

if there was any game you should spend $60 on I’d say this is it

and you can’t update rosters on 09 to new 2010 rosters of course so you can buy the new game

by 49erEmpire on Mar 3, 2010 10:36 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Hmmm, I was playing around last night, and you can download 2010 rosters created by other users…

by Missing Barry on Mar 4, 2010 7:31 AM PST up reply actions

The animations got a little tighter, which actually affects gameplay — there’s less jerky “lock into an animation before a catch” business, so you can catch and throw to get more outfield assists. DPs are less common now that they added some sorely needed “slide into the 2B/SS” animations; I’ve seen a lot of lobbed or bounced throws to first on the back end of a double play attempt.

As for other non-glitz changes, one of the biggest that I noticed is that you can actually get doubles down the line now, whereas in ‘09 the ball would just die and it would be a single. The pitcher warmup before he comes in (you get 8 pitches) is nice; you can figure out what’s working and what’s not.

Of course, there are a bunch of bugs right now with franchise, but I think they said a fix was coming next week or the week after.

call pitches?

Well, if professional catcher Buster Posey can’t do it, what chance do I have?

If Lincecum doesn’t actually scream “Sit the fuck down!” from the dugout after every strikeout recorded by a reliever in one of his outings, then I don’t find the game to be realistic at all.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

Actually, one of the best parts of the game, is that you can record your own personal cheers and jeers.

Still and all, why bother? Here's my answer. Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.

Is it as good as

MVP Baseball 2005? Otherwise I am still boycotting.

I actually like The Show better than MVP.

by Missing Barry on Mar 3, 2010 1:58 PM PST up reply actions

You know, it very will could be better. I haven’t picked up a baseball video game in years, so it’s easier for me to turn on “get off my lawn” mode. AFAIK, the common sentiment was (at least for 05-08) still MVP > The Show, the right? Has The Show gotten better as a whole, or have you always preferred it?

by GameSix on Mar 3, 2010 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

I was a hold out until last year

The show really is a great game, I think I may even have to give it the edge over MVP. Do yourself a favor and pick it up if you have a PS3. I still miss the Batting game from MVP with the tractors and ramps, good times.

I was a pretty big MVP fan, and didn’t really like any of its competitors, until I played The Show ‘08 I think was the year for ps2, liked it, and when I finally got around to getting a PS3 bought the new one and was very impressed. I love their hitting, you can actually sit on pitches, take walks, lay off balls – I just find it better/more realistic (at least for my ability, I don’t play all that often) than MVP ever was. I also like the pitching – in MVP I could consistently put the ball exactly where I wanted it, The Show….there’s less command, again, more realistic and just more to my preferences.

by Missing Barry on Mar 3, 2010 2:32 PM PST up reply actions

Your last point is spot on. I loved MVP, but pitching was far too easy because every pitcher had near-pinpoint control. In The Show it really matters which pitcher is on the mound

MVP!

MVP is one of my all-time favs too. Honestly, the only thing better about MVP now than the Show is Kruk and Kuip. The Show kills MVP.

I heard one of the songs from MVP 05 on the radio yesterday, The Bravery, “Honest Mistake” Just hearing that song brought back a lot of memories. So I downloaded a bunch of those songs from MVP and put them on my jukebox in The Show. You can have custom music in the show, not only during menus and certain game modes, but you can pick walk up and pitcher’s warm up music as well.

What hitting settings does everyone use?

Do you guys use guess pitch? Which difficulty do you play on? One of the things I don’t like about the past games in the Show franchise is that hitting always seemed to come easy for me. Everyone was hitting above 330+ and I didn’t enjoy that lack of realism.

Which settings provide the best realism in terms of hitting?

by giants92388 on Mar 3, 2010 4:24 PM PST reply actions

guess low fastball baby, most pitchers like to pitch low and if you guess wrong its easier to wait on an offspeed pitch then to get crossed up by a good fastball

I get my ass kicked on anything above rookie, but usually I’ll guess fastball every time and judge from there. It’s funny that you’d say it’s too easy, as most people’s main complaint is that the Show is too difficult.

I play on veteran, with the Contact slider notched up to about 75%. I never guess pitch locations or type, because whenever I guess correctly I get excited and swing at the pitch even if it’s out of the strikezone.

Also, I like finding somewhat obscure players that for whatever reason I always do well with. Adam Lind and Manny Parra are two that come to mind for 09

I play on veteran and usually have pretty good games. Hiroki Karuda (or however you spell it) kicked my ass earlier today, for some reason I couldn’t pick up his pitches. I don’t guess pitches for the same reason and if I know it’s a fastball all I do is pull it 400 Ft. foul.

I’m pretty sure the game gives you a contact/power bonus of some kind when you guess the pitch right. You’re really putting yourself at a disadvantage by not guessing!

If anyone gets the PS2 version, mention if there are any changes from last year’s version.

"meh"

by SFGuy on Mar 3, 2010 6:52 PM PST reply actions

I have the PS2 version, but I didn’t play last year’s version of The Show, so I can’t compare it to that. I can, however, say that the PS2 version seems to have gotten very little attention. Some of the significant changes in the Road to the Show mode for the PS3 version are entirely absent from the PS2 one. I think there are other things that were left out, too, but again, I don’t have a lot to compare it to. There are also little oversights, like seeing the W-L record from 2008 displayed before an exhibition game instead of 2009.

I get the impression that the PS2 version is little more than a roster update this year. I guess you can’t expect too much more in 2010, but it’s still annoying that they don’t make it clear what’s different about the PS2 version.

Also, a lot of people are reporting lots of weird bugs in the PS3 version that will soon be fixed through a patch. There are apparently problems with the “player potential” ratings that result in things like Mauer being claimed on waivers or really goofy trades where great players are undervalued. I mention this because the PS3 will probably patch this problem out, but the PS2 doesn’t have that option. I don’t know if this would be in the PS2 version, or if they didn’t change enough for this year’s PS2 version to have it become a new problem.

I will say, the one thing that disappoints me with every baseball game ever is the lack of understanding of the statistics side of baseball from the developers….

by Missing Barry on Mar 3, 2010 7:23 PM PST reply actions

Two words: target audience.

The Kids: Lewis, Posey, Sandoval, Bowker, Schierholtz, Frandsen, Ishikawa, Amezaga

Current Team: Rowand, Sanchez, DeRosa, Sandoval, Huff, Molina, Renteria, Schierholtz

The Kids' CHONE WAR projection= 12.7
Current Team's CHONE WAR projection= 12.6

by dregarx on Mar 3, 2010 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

Yep, but it’s at such a low level it does have a pretty big negative effect on my experience (mostly for Dynasty mode). Stupid target audience needs to get educated already!

by Missing Barry on Mar 3, 2010 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

Bearing in mind that I haven’t played a video baseball game since, oh, I don’t know, maybe the original Nintendo, how do statistics matter in this game? I mean, if the game is realistic, and it sounds like it is, OBP (for example) is going to matter whether the game calculates it for you or not.

by taliesin on Mar 3, 2010 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

There are certain game modes which focus more on management stuff, where you’ll probably end up having the computer simulate most of the games in a season or several seasons. So it mainly comes into play when deciding on lineups and such when playing those modes.

by Seasick fish on Mar 4, 2010 12:58 AM PST up reply actions

It’s in things like player ratings. A pitcher’s ability is judged over many categories (as it should be), but some of those categories are just….ugh. 4 of the categories are his ability to limit singles, doubles, triples and HR’s, for instance. His “clutch” ability is another category. Hitters will get overvalued on things like their “contact” ability while plate discipline doesn’t get weighed heavily enough, and I’m not sure their simulations do a good job of simulating based on the things that actually lead to wins or not. Overall, I feel an understanding of saber principles would lead to players being much more accurately rated. Like I said, this mostly bothers me in Dynasty Mode.

A couple more points along these lines that bother me. One – it’s not always clear whether you should adjust a rating down or up in a certain category to make a player better. Two – I like the numbers rating system most sports games use – I hate their little bars that make it unclear how good a player is, and I like being able to easily look through a list of the entire league by position to see where my guys rank and who I should be looking to acquire.

by Missing Barry on Mar 4, 2010 7:38 AM PST up reply actions

Statistics are different in video games than in actual baseball. I see what you’re saying, but I’m not sure I can think of a way to change the statistics to lead to results that better reflect real life.

Wayne Rooney, 1/27/09: Cometh The Hour, Cometh The Man

by Useful_Idiot on Mar 4, 2010 2:48 PM PST up reply actions

Are you talking in terms of player ratings or simulations? I’m a bit unclear on what you’re trying to say.

by Missing Barry on Mar 4, 2010 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

In terms of establishing a statistical system accurate enough that if a season was simulated, the results would be pretty accurate. In other words, the Pirates don’t win the NL central, John Mayne doesn’t win the Cy Young, etc.

Wayne Rooney, 1/27/09: Cometh The Hour, Cometh The Man

by Useful_Idiot on Mar 4, 2010 3:31 PM PST up reply actions

I mean, I wouldn’t mind a simulation just based on team rating if the players were rated according to correct statistical concepts (and thus the team rating was pretty well constructed)…..but unfortunately, it’s just wrong to begin with, leading everything based on the wrong ratings to be wrong….

by Missing Barry on Mar 4, 2010 5:47 PM PST up reply actions

The one thing that’s always driven me nuts about these games is that minor leaguers must be low in all categories, even when they are say, blindingly fast or great with the glove. I’ll never forget when Calvin Murry had a D- rating in CF, and Jason Ellison had an F rating in speed..arrrgghh (yes, I’m showing my age).

by tyrannoman on Mar 4, 2010 5:56 PM PST up reply actions

True, not a fan of that either.

by Missing Barry on Mar 4, 2010 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

also, the grades aren’t widely spread out and just all-around confusing (for example, in 09, Jason Bartlett had a 99 in lefty contact but a 70 in righty contact, which averaged for a B grade, but in the scouting report it stated that he had the potential to hit .400. Isn’t that for hitters with an A contact rating?)

Fun Fact: Jonathan Sanchez threw his first no-no on my 13th birthday.

by Ramah71 on Mar 4, 2010 6:34 PM PST up reply actions

I think I saw that the RttS mode this year (on the PS3 version) doesn’t even track OBP or SLG, when the ‘07 version of The Show at least had that. I don’t know why they would take it out, since surely a significant portion of players (though far from a majority) would find it useful. They still keep track of walks and extra base hits, right? It couldn’t be hard to program those in. Would it affect memory usage or loading times in a significant way?

by Seasick fish on Mar 4, 2010 12:52 AM PST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure that is incorrect

I’m playing RTTS and can see my slugging percentage and OBP after each game. I haven’t yet gone into my own stats yet, but if you’ve played the game you know that after each game there is a screen that shows you how many goals you acheived/failed, and to the left are your stats. OBP and SLG are both in there.

I took my first walk last night, yay. And I hit a Grand Slam. I’m now hitting a whopping .125, it’s my only hit this season. I guess I just squared it up nicely. Honestly I felt nothing when it hit the bat. :) In fact, I thought I had popped up. It just kept carrying.

It takes neither courage nor intelligence to cheer for a team only when that team wins. The true test of a fan's mettle is the same as it is for a player: Were you there when you were needed?

Rowand actually worms his way under the legs of a few players, then appears to be messing with the feet of rookie Buster Posey. I can’t quite figure out what is happening at first until Posey bursts out of his seat and starts hopping up and down like a madman. That’s when it hits me — Rowand gave Posey a hot foot. Everyone on the bench is falling over in laughter and Posey has to be separated from Rowand, who just successfully pulled off one of baseball’s classic pranks.

Yes, I know this has nothing to do with gameplay, but the scene is just an example of the depth Sony has gone to in order to create what I think is the most complete, most compelling baseball video game I’ve ever experienced.

Did you play last year’s version? If so, any differences?

Don't have the new one

it should be coming today from gamefly, but I’ll have the PS3 version this time thanks to my roommate. I really doubt the PS2 version is different from last year apart from roster updates.

Apparently I’m in the minority, but I hate that kind of stuff. It adds 0 to the game, yet the developers waste so much time adding BS like that. Make the game better. Fix glitches, learn some statistics, and work out the gameplay to make it as good as possible instead of wasting time on pointless garbage like that….

by Missing Barry on Mar 5, 2010 5:50 AM PST up reply actions

as long as the gameplay is good, that doesn’t bother me when it’s during the “empty” portions of the game when you’ve set the controller to get another beer. The worst example of this I’ve seen was MLB2K9, where the game was so glitchy I literally refused to play it, but with every step the players would kick up clouds of dust. You know, because that happens on the field all the time…

by tyrannoman on Mar 5, 2010 8:05 AM PST up reply actions

One of my biggest pet peeves in games is animations that fill up the empty time in between innings/batters and whatever else that they don’t let you cut away from immediately if you want to. I don’t mind animations if they don’t get in the way of game play and such….it just really, really bothers me when they do. Also, like I said, instead of creating cut scenes they could be spending their time researching sabermetric concepts. ;)

by Missing Barry on Mar 5, 2010 8:15 AM PST up reply actions

Oh, 2K9...

I play it because it’s the only game I have, and my wife got it for me for Christmas. But having said that…

About every three or four games I refuse to save the progress because a glitch completely screws me over during a game. For example: I was up 1-0 against the Dodgers, and threw a guy out from home….except they called him safe since Manny literally slid through the catcher and tagged home on the other side. Whatever, I can deal with that.

Then, around the eighth inning, with the game still tied and two guys on with two out, there is a can of corn to short left. The LF was lined right up with where the ball would drop, and at the last moment the LF wiggs out for no reason, starts making herky-jerky movements, and the ball lands five feet behind him.

AUGH. It really tempts me to get The Show, but that would be at the cost of $60 and the wife’s hurt feelings.

Oh, and the injuries are ridiculous as well. 4/5 of my starting rotation is currently on the DL, with Cain & Linecum out for the season with torn rotater cuffs or something. Somehow I’m staying afloat with a rotation of Bumgarner, Lowry, Joe Martinez, Zito, & Tom Glavine.

lol

man 2k really sucks, and it has since like 2k5. I remember playing that all the time on xbox and I liked it because it was cheap, but now they’re expecting you to pay 60 bucks for a bugged out piece of crap? I played last year’s and didn’t even finish a game before sending it back to gamefly. It was terrible.

Not gonna lie

I heard it’s playable this year… I know it’s not saying much, but I’m cheerin em on… They’d have to do so much to surpass The Show, but a little competition couldnt hurt (cough, madden, cough)

FWIW, I played the 2K10 demo and it’s a lot more improved. Not enough to make me want to run out and buy it, but at least it’s playable.

I’m glad it’s a little better, but I’m really glad I added the PS3 to complete my console stable. 2K9 was just so bad. I literally hooked up my original Xbox to play All Star Baseball, and had to try to create most of the roster.

The average baseball fan loves that stuff, so the developers will put it in there.

Yeah, that’s why I said “apparently I’m in the minority”. I don’t even think it relates to how much of a fan you are….I guess people just have different video game priorities than me? But I’ve noticed that going all the way back to the Sega days and then the jump to N64 – graphics always seemed to matter to others more than me, whereas I just wanted a fun game experience. I’m trying to play a fun game….and apparently a lot of other people are more concerned about the visual aspects than whether it’s actually a fun game….

by Missing Barry on Mar 5, 2010 11:35 AM PST up reply actions

I'm with you.

I mainly play games for the… gameplay. I think art direction is a lot more important than visual quality. If the look of the game is well designed, graphical fidelity shouldn’t be as much of an issue.

I don’t know that you’re alone on that. Some of my favorite games ever were the Super Star Wars (and Empire and Jedi) on the Super Nintendo. Great games, loads of fun, didn’t really care that Han Solo looked vaguely like a human. Tried to play more graphics intensive games on both 360 and PS3 and walked away unimpressed. Much rather have an interesting game/story than great graphics.

The Show is amazing

I have had the Show every year since the PS3 came out, and this year’s is the best by far. A lot of Giants specific commentary, panda’s intro, a lot of lincecum info, it’s awesome. Also, Renteria and Rowand are actually serviceable vets in the game… Last but not least- My first game back went to extras… where I pinch hit Uribe for Renteria against the dodgers… and hit a walk off jack. The game is not easy, it’s realistic. Don’t get discouraged hitting the first few days, and go to batting practice- I was always early, even on fastballs. A little bit of practice tho, and Panda, DeRosa and Huff will take you to jack city!

by Missing Barry on Mar 5, 2010 11:35 AM PST up reply actions

I know right?

I heard it bases each player’s statistics by a computer looking at the past 3 years of their careers… Yeah, Rowand shouldn’t be nearly as good as he is, and renteria… should be god awful. That aside, Freddy Sanchez has like 4 errors for me in 2 games? He seems to drop the ball a lot, maybe I’m just bad at defense?

Is there still that glitchy thing

Where if you guess fastball in with a right handed hitter and a runner on third, the runner on third steals home (and gets thrown out). I had to change the baserunning controls for ‘09 back to the “classic” version. Anyone know if this still happens? Otherwise, I can’t wait. Other than nearly causing a divorce, ’09 was one of the best games I have ever played. Overall, I am still partial to the EA Sports NHL series since the games are shorter, but for a baseball game, this is as good as it gets!

The one negative thing about The Show ‘10 is that they have Prince Fielder’s walk-off blasphemy in the intro video.

I hate that guy.

Just played Opening Day for the Giants and won 6-5. Timmy got rocked for 5 runs in 6 innings, but Aubrey Huff came through with a 2 out go-ahead single in the top of the 9th, followed by an RBI double by Buster Posey. If only…

When I played last year, Tim got rocked vs. Milwaukee. What scared me was Rowand hit into a double play in the 2nd and struck out on a slider in the dirt in 6th or 7th inning with runners on base.

The game will be even better in the next week or two as they fix it with patches....

The rosters are kinda messed up right now with a few bugs and the same with the franchise mode and certain other aspects of the game that the game developers have been fixing this week. When I got it on the launch date on Tuesday the unlockable stadiums weren’t working, but they did by the next morning. Just wait for the custom rosters that come out later next week with each team’s top prospects then you can really get into franchise mode and the like. :D

I haven't paid much attention to this thread

nor much attention to arcade-style baseball games released in the last few years. Peter Hartlaub posted a review today in the Comicle of this game, and I thought you all might be interested: Little Man Jumping on Chair

The following strong words caught my attention:

Meanwhile, the upstart MLB 10: The Show is arguably the strongest baseball game since the High Heat Baseball era ended in 2003.

So….. whaddaya think nerds? Notwithstanding the bad High Heat graphics and the almost 10 year gap, what say you?

Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."

Bengie Molina: "I don't understand why they didn't want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that." Brain Sabean: "He's certainly welcomed back with open arms".
