Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

"When I spoke with Emmanuel Burriss last week, he’d just returned from a consultation with the Carolina Panthers’ orthopedist about his broken left foot. Dr. Robert Anderson offered three treatment options, including surgery, and Burriss was on the fence.

Ultimately, he decided to undergo surgery and Dr. Anderson performed it Sunday in Charlotte.

Burriss will be on crutches for a couple days and in a walking boot thereafter. He is expected to be game ready in 10 weeks, meaning mid-June at the earliest."

In light of this, Baggs speculates about a trade for a 2B/SS utility guy.

That sucks.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Frandsen: “Hey, skip, you remember I’m a middle infielder, right?”
Bochy: “Did someone just talk? Did you guys hear anything?”

Cuz we don’t have nearly enough of those.

Well, he’s right that none of those guys can really play an adequate SS, and if Uribe’s playing 2B for the foreseeable future it does make sense to have someone else on the roster who can play SS.

That said, I’m really have trouble envisioning Sabe’s sales pitch when he tries to move Frandsen for a backup MI: “take this guy I don’t like, and give me someone who does the same things, only better, please.” I smell an overpay a-coming. Hmm…. I’ll go ahead and guess Alex Hinshaw for Yuniesky Betancourt!

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

How many teams carry more than two legitimate defensive shortstops?

Most teams carry a third SS like they carry a third catcher: for emergency use only.

That’s true if there’s a real certainty that Freddy Sanchez is coming back after a month. But that certainty surely doesn’t exist. His shoulder was supposed to be fine in December — it wasn’t. It was supposed to be fine in March, it wasn’t. Does anybody really believe he’s showing up in the lineup in late April? This is sounding like Noah Lowry (or Barry Bonds’ knee) all over again to me. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn come Mayday, that he’s still sore when he tries to swing. I wouldnt’ be crazy surprised to hear he’s had another surgery at some point.

So, if the Giants simply don’t know when or if they’re getting their 2B back AND they’re committed to starting Uribe at 2B until he comes back, then the immutable logic leads you to needing, yes, a third legitimate SS.

That would be a problem, if DeRosa wasn’t second baseman. As it is, the teams has 3 middle infielders guaranteed a spot on te 25 man roster, two of which can play SS adequately and the third on an emergency basis. If the team really felt a need for more MI help, they could carry Downs or Velez until Sanchez is back (though I don’t think it’s necessary).
