Cable/Satellite advice

I'm sure this has been more or less covered in other posts, so sorry for being redundant, but I'm hoping to get some advice on possibly switching to a different cable or satellite provider.  We currently have Dish Network at the cheapest rate but it doesn't have CSN.  With the season fast approaching we'll either need to upgrade or switch to something else.  Or go radio only, which I've considered, but I think I'll miss watching on TV.

Direct TV seems to be the cheapest and it looks like their most basic package has CSN and MLB.  Anyone have any experience with them, or advice in general?  Thanks in advance.

I have plenty of experience with Comcast, Dish, Direct, Time Warner, and AT$T over the years.

Let me say this about them.

All those fartknockers should have their sphincters sutured shut and force-fed copious amounts of bacon grease, sour milk, cheese, pizza, tobasco sauce, refritos unflavored yogurt, 3 week old garlic fries, flat beer, and jalapenos.

I have had Dish and DirecTV

I have no complaints about DirecTV and it’s saved me from Comcast/etc. in SF for almost 10 years now.

I had Dish in Oakland because a big redwood tree blocked the DirecTV signal, and it was lousy except for the old Superstation service they had… NY, Boston, Denver, LA, etc. channels a la WGN/TBS, which were awesome for sports and news. That’s dead now, so Dish is dead to me too.

I have many, many complaints about the jackass blackout rules forced on the world by Fox/MLB. So, f’r instance, think carefully before you sign up for Extra Innings… if your vision of enjoyment involves Saturdays or Sunday evenings, I’d pass. Remember to check blackout rules before you buy too if there are non-baseball teams you’re interested in getting…

One final note: check with your cell and home phone provider to see if there are bundles/incentives to sign up. You might save a few dollars here or there.

I have had DirecTV for so long, they give me money each month :-) Just kidding, I have had DirecTV for about 15 years. They are giving me a $15 a month good customer “thank you” for all of 2010.

The customer service is great and they can usually fix any issue immediately with a satellite download. They have the best channel selection and HD selection IMO. And has been mentioned, I have had very few issues with the signal, even in snow, rain, wind and thunder storms.

With that silly whatchacallit ticket pricing scheme they are using this season, it might be a good idea to just buy your tickets now directly from the Giants web site. (Unless of course someone here can help you out.)

I would guess tickets for that game would be subject to that supply/demand escalating price dealie, and will be approaching astronomical in no time.

I’ve had Direct TV over ten years now and I would never even think of switching. I once tried out hi def cable simultaneously, and when I switched from one to the other, it was amazing how much sharper and clearer the picture was with Direct TV. I’m not sure which is cheaper, but it doesn’t matter. Pay the extra money if you have to. You can even big time them if you’ve been a good customer for a long time. They were selling hi def TIVO boxes for $199, and I used the “good customer” speech and got it for free.

I’ve had the Extra Innings and Sunday Ticket for years, so they made me a “preferred customer” — they give me free DVRs, movie stations, etc. They also have their own station, Channel 101, where you can see classic shows (“Deadwood”), cancelled shows, and shows you can see there months before it airs elsewhere (“Friday Night Lights”). Great picture, good customer service, and I’ve probably lost signal for 5 minutes in the last 5 years.

by SFGuy on Mar 20, 2010 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you LA guys have it a bit better

when we have big storms, it’s not unusual to lose the signal when the big squalls (or hailstorms) pass over. So, yeah, your TV won’t work for 5-10 minutes at a shot. Like 4 or 5 times in a rainy year.

Moonman didn’t say where this particular dish will be installed…. I remember staying in a house near Waipio Valley in Hawaii one time where it was almost useless, since it rained on and off almost constantly, so the signal was interrupted every 10 minutes or so. Outside of that limited type of situation, it’s not a problem.

I haven’t touched our dish itself since the day it was installed, and we’ve had some pretty good winds here in the last few years.

I used to have problems with the standard dish even in light rain. I sprayed some silicone on the dish so the water would run off easier and it got better. When I upgraded to the HD dish I no longer have any issues not matter how hard it is raining.

I had Directv since 1996 and I love it. If you ever are considering wanted any of the sports packages like MLB Extra Innings or NFL Sunday Ticket, Directv is the only way to go. Dish has neither and cable only has Sunday Ticket. You probably can get a good deal with any of the companies so I would call all three to see what best fits your budget.

get DirecTV

There is no reason to kill any brain cells over this, it is the easiest decision of your life. Better product, better price, better costumer service. DirecTV kicks every other provider’s ass in the amount of sports offered.

A few years ago I had Tim Warner Cable (while living in LA) and I have never had a worse customer experience with any business in my life. A few months after I moved, a friend sent me an article from the LA Times about the head of their Southern CA division being fired because everybody was having the same horrible experience. I was so happy that I printed the article and put it on my wall.

What was great about MLB Network was during a 3 game series between the Red Sox and Yankees last year, ESPN on both SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight spent the first 6-7 minutes covering the game leading off their show. MLB Network started their show with Brewers-Astros and waited until about 12-15 minutes in to cover the Red Sox-Yankees game (and they had the Red Sox vs. Yankees on their network Thursday night).

our service was out for like 3 days.

This is what made me switch to DirecTV in the first place. In 1994, I got one up morning and the cable was out. Not that big a deal, it happens with cable, so I went to work. I get home and it’s still out.

Now, we live a neighborhood that is about 60 years old so we have above ground telephone poles and electric on an alleyway between the homes. I go out to the back yard and see the TV “cable” for my house hanging down and not connected to my home.

So…I get on the phone and call up the provider. They tell me there are no reported outages in my neighborhood and they can have someone out here next week. I tell them that I am looking at the cable and it is not connected to my house. The customer service rep actually has the balls to tell me that if I go around to my neighbors and get them to call in they might be able to get someone out there in two days.

I cancelled the service right then and there on the phone, told them that I would use a coat hanger and tinfoil if I had to, and would never use their service again in my life. Picked up and installed the old single LNB DirecTV dish the next day and have never looked back.

They even called me when my service went up from the promo prices and offered me the “triple play” for less, I said no but wanted cheaper service. They offered to switch the name of the service to my girlfriend and give her the promo prices for a year. So they were pretty helpful.

I guess I’d like a satellite TV system, but at least at my current apartment it would be impossible to get a view of their satellites. The south sky is blocked by other buildings and trees. If only I were on the top floor…

Uh, that would be the latter

I had to call four times to get my bill adjusted for my service being out 3.5 weeks. The first three reps robotically said “No, we’re not authorized to do that.” so I asked to talk to a supervisor and each one said “My supervisor won’t do it either.” so I said “Let me talk to the supervisor anyway.” and they said “Ok” and proceeded to dump my call. (I’m not sure if was intentional or due to faulty headsets made by a certain company who will remain nameless but has nothing but morons working for them…wink)

Anyway, I called a 4th time yesterday and the guy I talked to actually listened to the problem, did the math, realized I was owed another $60 off my bill, got his supervisor to approve the credit and processed it.

This guy, Luis, must have been out sick the day they programmed the Roboreps with their primary objectives:

Here’s the best case I can make for DirecTV over Comcast:

I was a Comcast customer, and they made me crazy. Any time they did any sort of offer, it was only for new customers. After one year, our internet/TV price went up over $30. So I called Comcast, asking if we can get any sort of new offer, and they said no. New offers are for new customers only. So I told them I was leaving Comcast and switching to AT&T. I think they didn’t care because we were only getting basic TV from them, no premium channels, no high def channels, no DVR, nothing. They weren’t making much money off us anyway.

Through AT&T, we managed to save a LOT of money each month, and subscribed to DirecTV through AT&T. And the best part of it all is that each year, we can call AT&T/DirecTV and get a new offer for one year.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

Dish has treated me pretty well, it just blows that I can’t get the Giants in my area without paying up the arse (that, and Fox Business Channel as well…), and no MLB channel. If you can survive without watching the Giants on TV, Dish is pretty swell, and only costs me $40/month with DVR and most major channels you’d like to see.

I thoguth the correct term

is “paying out the ass”, but I’m not hip to what you kids are saying these days.

I think the bill they send you is a monthly suppository.

MLB TV question
DISH Network customers who have high speed internet access have the option of purchasing MLB.TV as an alternative to the MLB Extra Innings package for their baseball viewing needs starting at only $14.95 per month or $89.95 per year. While not the same as TV, the MLB.TV is a service available to consumers allowing them to utilize their computer along with high speed internet connection in order to enjoy every 2007 regular season out-of market game live. In addition, MLB.TV customers will enjoy condensed games, searchable videos, clickable line scores, Baseball Channel & extended highlights.

Found this on Dish’s website. Does anyone know if this means you can purchase MLB.TV and watch it through your Dish receiver?

doubt it

and it will blackout games from the local market – so if you’re in the bay area you can’t watch the Giants.

If you don't like Brandon Medders you're not a true fan.

HD Question

I have directv and have been mostly satisfied with it. They all are a bunch of leaches. My problem is last year several of the games were in standard def only, even when comcast said that they were available in hd. Anyone know why this was? Directv was no help at all.

by havefun79 on Mar 22, 2010 11:28 AM PDT reply actions

You must have the HD package, five LNB dish and the MPEG4 receiver/DVR. It is also on an alternate/parallel channel. In my case 696 is SD, 696-1 is HD. Add both to your list.

The good news: The HD Giants games on DirecTV/CSNBA are freakin awesome. The bad news: Not all of the games are in HD and It just pisses you off more when they broadcast in standard definition.

CSNBA announced earlier this year that ALL games will be in hi-def

I don't know anything about minor league players, so I adopted the Coke Bottle, and it's totally grown on me.

I think this season all games (home and away) will be in HD on Directv. Last season CSNBA was in a bit of a pissing contest with Directv, wanting a full time HD channel (instead of the 696-1 set up), so it withheld some of the games that it broadcast in HD only over the fiber. This year, they seem to be okay with the part-time HD channel, while Directv gets its latest satellite up and running (that last part I can’t confirm exactly, but that’s the prevailing story).

I had complained to CSNBA about the lack of HD games for away games last season, and they gave me some bullshit response about not having enough trucks, etc. to do it all. It seems that they’ve solved that problem this season.

Just Switched to Dish from Direct

The difference was $20 a month cheaper with Dish. I had a really hard time giving up the MLB channel though. I seriously watched that channel every night last year.
