All-time favorite SF Giants: Exceptions

I thought of this topic a while ago, but I was going to let StickRat finish all the positions.  I think he just didn't bother with the outfield.

Basically, I couldn't help but notice that under the definition "You don't have to have a reason, just pick your favorite" criteria, most of us went with the player who held the position when we were growing up and falling in love with baseball.

I'm curious who we chose (or would have chosen in the OF) that came later in our respective fan careers. (Or before your time, if you roll that way.)

(Note:  This isn't a request to list 11 positions with players that meet that criteria.  It's a request to see how many of your 11 just happen to.)

Star-divide

OK, I'll go first.

2B:  Robby Thompson
SS:  Omar Vizquel
3B: Matt Williams
LF:  Barry Bonds
RHSP:  Tim Lincecum
LHSP: Atlee Hammaker, before he fell apart.

Everyone else was playing before I was 16.

He was a good, high-OBP hitter who also played good defense while providing the Giants with excellent value while cheap and under team control. He ably took over third base from fan-favorite Matt Williams.

Also, he was the best home-grown position player drafted and developed by the Giants between Matt Williams (debut in 1987) and Pablo Sandoval (debut in 2008).

I really don’t understand why you wouldn’t understand why Giants fans love him. It’s pretty obvious.

Sure enough, that was the only time in his entire career he managed to get a hit with men on base (I’m clearly not exaggerating here). The following month was one of the worst of my life.

Blasphemy!

Are you trying to tell me that Kirk Rueter is not your favorite Giant LHSP of all time?

by Sigualicious on Mar 3, 2010 11:56 AM PST reply actions

Re-casting the context

I’m guessing from some of these posts that some of you missed or forgot the series of “elections” we did in these polls a few months back. So let me give that context.

We had a series of fanposts in which we posted our favorite SF Giant ever at that position. This was not supposed to be a logical, stat-based argument about who was best, but rather who was your favorite for any reason, sentimental reasons included.

Perhaps not surprisingly, our answers leaned heavily towards who manned each position when we were kids, just learning to love baseball. The idea of this topic is to surface favorite Giants who have surpassed or displaced our childhood heroes.

Example 1: Willie Mays was in CF when I was a kid. Willie Mays is my favorite SF Giants CF of all time. Hence: Willie Mays does not make my list for this topic.

Example 2: Chris Speier was the SS when I was a kid. I was a big Chris Speier fan. But when Omar came along, I enjoyed his play so much, I have to pick Omar as my favorite. Omar Vizquel does make my list for this topic.

You are free, of course, to drift in this topic any way you want, as we often do. But the intent was not to get a list of all time loveable Giants, some of whom were the first players you knew, some of which played the same positions as others on your list, and some of whom were utility players you have some fondness for.

A grander plan

Perhaps now is the time I reveal my master plan to strap buttered bread to the back of McCoven cats drop them. The principle of “Buttered bread always lands face down” will meet the principle of “Cats always land on their feet” and the combined pair should hover inches above the ground, creating an energy-free hovercraft.

I think you would need to put a small slice of buttered bread on each paw, with the buttered-side towards the paw. If the bread is on the cat’s back, won’t it just land on its feet? Maybe I’m picturing this wrong.

If the bread is on the cat’s back, butter up, then it can’t land face down if the cat lands feet first.

Cool… and who remains from that list if you drop the ones where your childhood favorite is still your overall favorite?

"The questions are so stupid. I don't believe in rivalries. I don't believe in curses. Wake up the damn Bambino, maybe I'll drill him in the ass."
- Pedro Martinez, asked about the Curse of the Bambino

RF: can’t think of a single past/present player that I really liked

Willie Kirkland

Serious. Guy was awesome. At least to a pre-adolescent. He used to flip bp balls over the rightfield cyclone fence in front of the bleachers. Scored about a dozen myself .

Bobby Bonds?

Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."

Bengie Molina: "I don't understand why they didn't want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that." Brain Sabean: "He's certainly welcomed back with open arms".

I just can’t imagine not liking Bobby Bonds or Jack Clark. Two of the probably 10 greatest SF Giants to me.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Brenly. I was at the error game. I remember my friends and I laughing at how many errors he was committing. I also remember us running around the park and hassling the usherettes for freebies from previous promotions. We ended up sneaking into the bleachers for the ninth inning.

Hal Lanier

Watching him at the plate, I thought “I could do that”.

Also Chris Arnold, Don Mason, Damaso Blanco…

Wow. This is before my time. Chris Arnold sound familiar but I didn’t know who Mason or Blanco were until I looked it up at Baseball reference.

The Giants offseason moves - "meh"

That’s funny, when I watched Hal Lanier at the plate I thought: “he can’t do this.”

I will finish them. Was waiting for Spring Training to roll around to get to the outfield. I’ll get the CF poll up Monday. Any suggestions?

CF Bernard? Unless we move Winn to CF, for this purpose. Eugh. Because I don’t wanna say Rowand or Bernard. Grissom? No I hated him. And no, I won’t say Tsuyoshi Shinjo — I hate the guy when he was in SF, even if he was LOLworthy.
RF Winn

5OF Jose Cruz Jr.

Lincecum
LOWRY
SCHMIDT
Rueter
J. Sanchez

Dan Runzler
Felix Rodriguez
Joe Nathan (I remember being enamored with him because he won 10 game that season, as if that meant anything for a relief pitcher. This was when I thought of wins as a good pitcher measure)
Matt Herges

Robb Nen
