Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

Velez remains crazy-fast at 27, and he can harness his speed better, too. He recalled a Class A game in the New York-Penn League in which he tried to steal second and flew out of the chute so fast he slid 10 feet past second base. The shortstop was behind him with the ball, so Velez just kept going to third, where he was thrown out.

From the Chronicle. I've been laughing at this for ten minutes, and now the tears are starting to flow. Note: If anyone gets hurt, Mark DeRosa will slide over to that position and open a spot for Velez. He makes up for his poor on-base percentage with his speed!

Oh yes, I do. Still, a terrible person.

The extra features of that documentary show the uncut George Wallace interview footage. He was an old man at that point, trying to repair his image. But he’s still scary to watch. He’s trying to answer the questions in a way that paint him in a good light, but after each question he site back and waits while his assistant writes out the “correct” answer for him. It’s all on video, too! Wallace waiting. The assistant writing. Wallace taking the large sheet of paper, reading it to himself, putting it down, and then repeating what’s on there.

It is fascinating to learn about him. And terrifying.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

Definitely not. Without looking back on it though, I’m not sure there were many prolific base stealers who stole with enough success for it to be worth it. What’s the rate people say is necessary, 75%, for stealing to be helpful offensively?

by giantsfansince1981 on Mar 2, 2010 10:55 AM PST up reply actions

75% is a rule of thumb, but it depends on the rest of the lineup. A steal is more valuable if you have a bunch of guys for whom AVG=SLG. Those 80s Cards teams actually did have a bunch of singles hitters. And, actually, Vince Coleman (and Rickey Henderson too, for that matter) had a greater than 80% career success rate. In his three best years (SB-wise), he was even better, 326/387 = 84.2%.

WHY IS BENGIE?!

by Lars The Wanderer on Mar 2, 2010 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

Well, I’ve wanted to write fiction professionally for about… almost 10 years now. Wanting to do it and doing something about have been different things, naturally, but I started to get serious a few years ago and going after this degree is the biggest step I’ve taken so far (although, I will actually be submitting a finished story to publications pretty soon, so that’s also a big step).

I would also be very, very happy to teach at the college level. Which is my plan for a day job. As I understand that writing is not traditionally very lucrative. Not that teaching is very lucrative, but it’s the most fulfilling thing I can imagine doing outside of writing.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Mar 2, 2010 11:49 AM PST up reply actions

From what I’ve heard, the biggest step is to actually write a book, whether or not it gets published. It’s more work than most people think, which is why everyone seems to think they have a great idea for a novel but very few actually get it on paper.

Unless I make an effort in another direction, I tend to write very realistic fiction, character-driven rather than plot-driven. Short stories come more naturally to me than novels.

But the novel I need to finish (and substantially rewrite) is more like magical realism, and I also have a sort of science fiction project which is weird and which I’ve explained here before.

I also like doing nonfiction of the personal essay/memoir variety.

Most of my writing tends to be realistic and character-centric with lots of dialogue. The novella was pretty gritty and weirdly violent. Didn’t anticipate that at all. With the shorts I tend more towards period pieces and less towards autobiography.

SAT prep is much easier than teaching in a public school. Let me put it this way; I don’t mind teaching on Saturdays because it feels like a break.

I don’t know how you feel with regards to classroom management (and you might not know either, yet), but you might think about trying for a private or charter school job once you have the masters degree. A masters (especially if you choose Stanford) should get you any available job at a high performing school. And it’s most likely that you will enjoy teaching more.

Well, there’s no question of that, I wasn’t trying to suggest it was a completely analogous situation – just that it was something that showed me that I could get up in front of people and talk for three hours if I had to without flipping out. The volunteer work has doubtless been far more valuable for me.

As for jobs after school – I need those loan forgiveness programs pretty badly, so I probably will be spending at least the first few years at a non-high performing school, but I am completely comfortable with the idea (for now, anyway lol).

But, yes, the kids are really nasty to each other (both definitions of that word work, here).

They are also REALLY effected by peer pressure. They’re lazy. They’re emotional. They’re the centers of their own tiny world and see nothing beyond the borders of said world.

This trend continued into college, and even today, having come to terms with a good many things and completely aware of my previously destructive behavior, it’s sometimes a struggle to stop myself from being an antisocial wretch.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

These all sound familiar

I moved to Southern California in my Junior High/middle school days because my father was an alcoholic. I alienated everybody & started on a path of self-destructive behavior. Although I’m better now (20 years later), I still have strong anti-social issues to work out. (actually don’t wanna, I’m content with being a jerk)

Yay middle school.

Davis is a guy who may turn out to be pretty good, but I find it hard to blame the Giants for letting him go. Speedy athletic center fielders come out of the minors pretty regularly I think. Most end up being exactly that, which without more does not a baseball player make.

We DFA’ed a guy who will steal more bases than our entire team and signed a 4th outfielder for 5 yrs 60 mi

by DFARowand on Mar 2, 2010 1:53 PM PST up reply actions

Sure, but I’m not defending Rowand’s contract. I’m just saying letting Davis go doesn’t seem that terrible in hindsight. In 162 plate appearances with the Giants in 2007, Davis posted a .363 obp, which I love, but he didn’t do much in 2008, posting a .272 obp over 226 plate appearances. Sure he was pretty good with the A’s last year, but I’m not sure it was clear or even likely he would be any good.

by giantsfansince1981 on Mar 2, 2010 2:10 PM PST up reply actions

In 2008, he got 19 pa’s with the Giants before being cut, so his career OBP at the time was .350. With great speed and defense.

It was a horrible move.

by Evan on Mar 2, 2010 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

A good point looking back over his stats again, but considering he had shown very little extra base power (last year was the first time he’s surpassed a .400 slugging) I think horrible is too strong a term. Shows the Giants don’t understand the value of obp, sure, but I just don’t think Davis is a great player. I’d take him starting in center this year, but I don’t think it’s a horrible move.

As I recall, we really needed a right-handed reserve outfielder at the time. It was weird.

by Evan on Mar 2, 2010 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

My only objection is to characterizing it as a horrible move or as something worthy of looking back in shame. Sure it was a bad move, but great 4th outfielders aren’t exactly rare commodities. The fact he would be a decent starter on the Giants now is a condemnation of the Giants’ current offense. I agree it was a bad move, I just don’t agree it was a terrible move.

by giantsfansince1981 on Mar 2, 2010 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

for the Giants they are
great 4th outfielders aren’t exactly rare commodities.

They haven’t produced one, except maybe Nate. Which is worse, as you say, because the starters (cf. Winn) would be 4th OF elsewhere.

From the Comicle article at the time:

“He hasn’t been getting the playing time he needs up here,” Bochy said. “We want to get some help for Bocock, and we think Burriss can come up and help us.”

So, with Roberts on the DL, Davis was cut loose to make room for Burriss, because Bocock was already on the roster.

Would the Giants be going to the WS if Davis were here? No. Was it bad to cut him loose for nothing? Yes. I daresay it was a terrible move.

Basically I chalk this up as one of the mistakes that happens in running a baseball team. Unfortunate, yes, but not as obviously wrong as other moves. Not that that means we shouldn’t criticize it, I just don’t think it deserves the condemnation it has received.

by giantsfansince1981 on Mar 2, 2010 3:15 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn’t “condemn” it, but I do think it’s symptomatic of how the Giants constantly freak out over SSS weirdness. After Davis’s good run at the end of 2007, they talked about him being our starting center fielder, which was an overreaction. Then, when he sucked for 19 PA, they decided he was totally worthless and DFAed him. Which was even more of an overreaction.

And then, shortly thereafter, Dave Roberts got hurt, and Clay Timpner and Brian Horwitz both ended up spending time on the roster. Oy.

by jcb9 on Mar 2, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

Oh absolutely it was a bad decision and symptomatic of the Giants’ generally bad player analysis.

I think I hesitate to look back on past decisions and declare them bad because in baseball even good GMs making decisions that are good at the time will come out wrong sometimes. I think it’s too easy to label this a horrible decision when I think it really falls into the category of bad decision that shows bad management practices rather than simply awful decision.

So perhaps it’s just semantics. Bottom line, I agree that Davis would be a much better option than Rowand to play center field and hit leadoff. Sigh.

by giantsfansince1981 on Mar 2, 2010 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

It was a bad decision, it was just small-stakes, so no one’s going to get especially wrought up about it. Unlike the Rowand deal.

Btw, I don’t think anyone really believed two years ago that Rajai was a better player than Rowand in absolute terms.
