Bengie Cold Molina

"It was a difficult winter," Molina said. "First I thought, 'I'm one of the best three catchers out there, a good clubhouse guy and someone who always puts out a great effort.' I thought I would get more offers. It gets you down a little bit to be treated like that and to not be appreciated for what you've done. It just didn't happen for me on the open market. It's difficult to not get discouraged by that. But nobody is going to feel sorry for you. It's a tough and sometimes rude business. I thought that over the last five years I had proven enough. Obviously people didn't notice."

He was obviously talking about the catching FA market, not all of major league baseball. He WAS one of the three best catchers out there, but that just speaks to how weak the market was. He should also try and remind himself once in a while that he’s at an age when catchers break down and teams tend to take that into consideration when looking to solve their catching woes.

This just makes this team even less likable. A whiny, washed-up, narcissistic catcher? A washed-up, defensively limited, wanna-be porn-star first-baseman? An injury-prone, washed-up, defensively limited shortstop? A manager and general manager who get hard-ons for gamery veteran grit, hate young hitters, and don’t understand the value of getting on-base? Check, check, check, check, and check. I think, more than anything, bringing Bengie back was because they thought they can make a run at the division and weren’t confident that Buster’s ready.

by Goofus on Mar 20, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Goofus is wrong

I think they had a plan all along to bring him back because he was their first/only choice, they just wanted him at a cheaper price.

And if they always planned to re-sign him at the exclusion of any other catcher, that’s just lousy. Particularly since it implies they can plan for this and don’t bother doing so with stuff like arbitration clocks or players coming off career-threatening injuries.

But he is not cocky or a narcisist
He is a good team mate, a good clubhouse guy, humble, does not whine or complain. He is not Milton Bradely, may not be the best hittter or runner, but he is always considered a nice guy on and off the food. That is, if you don’t try to steal his food or joke about his turtle-like speed or horrible on base percentage.

HLOLM.

Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

But nobody is going to feel sorry for you.

Well, he’s got this part right.

I want to like the players as people if I can’t like their performance, but I have a hard time liking people who seem to have excessive self-pride.

Not a team player.

Say hello to Frandsen, Lewis, and Bowker in Sabean’s dog house.

Welcome to the home, Ryan Verdugo. Do me proud with your sweet left arm! Also, keep up your undefeated streak. Don't change that 5-0 record!

I feel for him and can see where he’s coming from, but he should really stop going public with how underappreciated he feels. It’s starting to grate on me

by Useful_Idiot on Mar 21, 2010 1:03 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, exactly.

If you’re not getting what you think you’re “owed,” you can respond by either thinking that maybe you have an overly high opinion of yourself, or by thinking that nobody bothered to take notice of how awesome you were over the last five years. Bengie chose the latter.

Also, wasn’t his problem with the Mets (and early Giants) negotiations mostly about the length of the contract and not the money? Even if he views himself as a top catcher, surely he has to realize that an aging, out-of-shape catcher isn’t a smart long-term investment, right? Maybe some of this talk is just trying to save face.

I wish you’d stop complaining about his complaining. It’s starting to grate on me.

Could we please stop this? It’s quite grating.

Utter frustration and futility.

I hope the local media will stop saying he took “less money” to return to the Giants. His contract will end up being worth $6 million when the season is finished. His deal in NY would have been worth less.

Let’s not get pessimistic!

by fantastical on Mar 22, 2010 12:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

Rather than seeing the PA vesting clause as a reason to play Molina less, Sabean and Co, will look at the situation differently. They will play Molina more than they otherwise would have so as to not dissrespect him.

The Molina signing was a tragedy IMO.

Broke my will as a Giants fan.

If Molina really sucks, the Giants should just pay him his $6 million and tell him to just go home.

This article is probably the best argument for why we should have offered him arbitration.
