We have “situations” elsewhere too.

Situation Tomko?

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

I was thinking like the cleanup hitter, the number five hitter, the number six hitter…

Lewis did post an obp over .330 last year. Or is the article only talking about those expected to start?

It is right there, you could click on it and read it.

The Giants section only focused on Rowand.

Bochy: What’s this fancy stat here?
IT Guy: That’s how often they get on base. I do not know why you keep asking me, I am here to fix your server.

I did read it. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have known the author made a comment about Sandoval being the only Giants hitter with an obp over .330 last year. Part of that same sentence discusses the expected 2010 lineup, so I thought maybe the author was thinking only about the expected lineup when he made the Sandoval comment. I was just wondering if that was what he meant.

or the fact that F-Lew has said he isn’t warm and comfy leading off.

by tyrannoman on Mar 18, 2010 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Ah, I just realized why you thought I hadn’t read it. I had, hence the .330 specific obp comment, not just me assuming Fred Lewis would be a decent leadoff hitter.

Rowand up first?

I guess I should remind myself it could be worse, we could have rehired Dave Roberts at his previous rate of 6 million a year.

by Giant Voodoo on Mar 19, 2010 10:17 AM PDT reply actions

Back up plan?

I’d be really interested to hear what the contingency plan is if Rowand fails at leadoff. Out of the projected starting lineup, would the next option be DeRosa? Sanchez? Or do they have to find room for Torres?

by Fresburg on Mar 19, 2010 12:34 PM PDT reply actions

Good question

My guess: Sanchez when healthy; Torres if Rowand really stinks; Renteria if he’s doing okay and neither Torres nor Sanchez is an option.

Darren Ford can’t get here fast enough, imho.

by Lyle on Mar 19, 2010 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I have a hard time believing Rowand could get benched in that scenario. It would be more likely that they put DeRosa in RF and put Torres in LF.

What’s up with the love affair with Ford? I get that he’s having a good spring, against minor leaguers, but what else?

by Fresburg on Mar 19, 2010 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I just think he’s turned the proverbial corner. That’s primarily wishcasting, but others seem to have the same fantasy opinion, so maybe I’m not crazy.

I’d rather have a “Problem” at lead-off than a “Situation”.

Who’s with me?

Rooting for Jose Casilla to take his K- and GB-inducing skills to the majors and join his brother.

The Kids: Lewis, Posey, Sandoval, Bowker, Schierholtz, Frandsen, Ishikawa, Amezaga... CHONE WAR projection= 12.7

Current Team: Rowand, Sanchez, DeRosa, Sandoval, Huff, Molina, Renteria, Schierholtz... CHONE WAR projection= 12.6

I’d go with travishamockery, but I don’t think Rowand hitting leadoff is really that bad. For the first half of the season, anyway.
