John Barr - best Scouting Director in the biz
From Andy Seiler's blog, MLB Bonus Baby:
"Since I’m without baseball once again today, here’s a fun look at where I rank the scouting departments, taking into consideration the fact that a few scouting directors haven’t even had a draft yet. These rankings are based on the entire drafting process, including the resources and effective use of resources of each department. Departments don’t have to be given a large amount of resources, but effectively using what you’re given should be priority number one.
Here are the rankings with their scouting director listed and small writeups on each:
1. San Francisco Giants, John Barr: I couldn’t be more impressed with what Barr and company have done in their two years in office. They’ve been given their fair share of money to spend, but they put on a show with the 15th-largest budget in the 2009 draft, getting four players that were considered first round talents at one point or another. It was an easy decision to put them at the top."

J. Barr...a name steeped in Giants history.
Well, sorta.

Optimism surrounding some part of the Giants organization?
Practically unheard of.
All snark aside, keep up the good work John Barr.
Please tell me we have moved past the dark ages of post hoc ergo propter hoc.
LOL METS

Didn’t a high up scouting person fist fight a prospect?
Matt Graham is an anagram for .... why don't you ask the scrabble expert!

He tried to fight a whole team. Apparently he was a huge douche nobody in the organization liked (I know someone that did baseball scouting for them) or respected….he’s now been fired.

Didn’t he rip his shirt off or something?

Wow, this is just, well, crazy. Like batshit insane. Silly Mets.
Eagerly anticipating adding to my Giants family.

I think he was the assistant GM
Tony Bernazard (Sp?) I believe is who it was and IIRC he challenged the whole AA team, specifically Jose Coronado
Adopted Giant: Mike Krukow.
Grab Some Pine, Meat
Kevin Frandsen: The best SS on the Giants roster
Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010
He was a MI who had a good sized career (10 years). I think of him as predominantly an Expo, but checking BR he came up with them but was soon gone and spent his best years with the White Sox and Indians. He was always a bit of a hot-head and frequently involved in dust-ups (tended to stand on top of the plate and virtually always charged the mound on any pitch within a couple inches of him), so the story was pretty much in keeping with his character.

And now I think he works for Scott Boras

Is he counting Wheeler among the four? If not: Stoffel, Joseph, Belt, Dominguez?

Certainly Stoffel, Joseph, and Dominguez are included in that group. If not Wheeler, then maybe Graham?
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
I feel like the questionable 1st rd draft pick is Dominguez.
So including Wheeler you have Stoffel, Joseph, Graham.
No including Wheeler you have Dominguez also.

Crawdad, as well.
Jonathan Sanchez: Often maddening to watch, but capable of perfection on a moment's notice---just like his adoptive father.
Wrong year.

True, but Dominguez was definitely talked about as a 1st round talent. I am 100% sure of that.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Wheeler, Joseph, Stoffel, Graham. Dominguez was considered as high as the early second, but I didn’t hear a single team that had any desire for him in the first at any point last year.

Not to contradict you, but you did write this:
The talent level of this draft greatly impresses me. Wheeler, Joseph, Dominguez, and Stoffel have all been discussed as having first-round talent from time-to-time, as has Matt Graham, who was the top prep pitcher in his class for a time during his pre-junior year. They could potentially have the best top six players of any combination of six players in any team’s draft. That’s how high I am on this draft. I still have to wait to see how many players they get under contract, but I’m optimistic about that too, as they saved money in the right places in order to have plenty to sign the big players at the top. There is some risk in this draft, though, as Dominguez, Stoffel, Belt, and Graham have all been disappointments in one way or another over the last year or two, and they come with major flaws. However, the talent level is undoubtedly there.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
And it’s actually not really contradicting you, since you could have just meant that people thought Dominguez could jump into the 1st round.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
As much as Sabeean’s era ticks me off the thought that a new GM would replace Barr or hinder him still makes me cringe. And that fact he will go on air and talk about his craft makes me like him even more. It is nice to see I might not be a total homer were Barr is concerned.
Threat level that the 2010 Pads finish with more wins than the 2010 Giants is currently at - 25%
Where would the San Francisco Giants be without John Barr?
Only wish he could have been directing the 2007 draft for the Giants.
Yeah
That draft is looking more and more like dogshit considering we had 6 picks before the 2nd round. Not to mention we also managed to accidentally draft the wrong guy at one point. What retarded monkey led that shitshow?
Sorry, that may be a little harsh, but the more I think about that draft the more it pisses me off.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
we also managed to accidentally draft the wrong guy at one point
I don’t know what this is referring to. What happened?

The guy they meant to draft has long since been released and I assume is out of baseball.
