If this offense even approaches not awful, I’m giving all the credit to Meulens.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

Best case scenario: Bowtie does the same.

Jonathan Sanchez: Often maddening to watch, but capable of perfection on a moment's notice---just like his adoptive father.

What happened to all the assertions last season that the hitting coach is impotent and totally useless?

Yeah, good luck with that.

Ruben Sierra

1993: .233/.288/.390 in 158 ABs. 22 HRs, 101 RBIs.

Be careful what you wish for, Wil.

158 ABs and 101 ribbies? I will take 9 of those

by wilriv21 on Mar 16, 2010 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions

check the math, buddy

how are you going to get 909 runs out of 9 players batting .233?

If they all hit 101 RBIs, it seems easy enough.

I’m just wondering how we managed to get a DH on the team.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

Easy

They all hit like Adam Dunn c. 2006.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

It’s 158 games for Sierra that year; I think he had 630 at bats. OPS+ of 86. Wow, he was bad that year. But the RIBBIES!

Eagerly anticipating adding to my Giants family.

Huff's career high in RBIs: 108, 2008, Orioles

OBP of the guys hitting ahead of him:

Brian Roberts: .378
Melvin Mora: .342
Nick Markaris: .406

2009 OBPs of the guys likely to hit ahead of Huff this year:

Aaron Rowand: .319
Freddy Sanchez: .326
(Edgar Renteria: .307)
Pablo Sanoval: .387

…yeah, he’s totally getting 100 RBIs.

This is what I’ve tried pointing out (admittedly without the exact stats) to people who point to Huff’s 86 RBI from last year. But usually to no avail.

Counterpoint

Molina drove in 98 runs in 2008 hitting cleanup on a pretty crappy team. (72 wins, 640 runs)

Proudly adopted Aubrey Huff. You can't beat that!

by Goofus on Mar 16, 2010 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

95 RBI for Molina in 2008. Given enough opportunities, a hitter can drive in 100 runs (hence Ruben Sierra’s glorious 101 RBI 1993 season), even if it’s unlikely because that hitter doesn’t have great on-base guys hitting in front of him. But I doubt Huff will drive in 100 runs partly because he is unlikely to be as good as he was in 2008, when his OPS+ was 137.

by giantsfansince1981 on Mar 16, 2010 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Bengie's OPS+ was only 98 in 2008

If that’s all it takes to drive in 100 runs hitting clean up for the 2010 Giants, it doesn’t seem that unreasonable that Huff could do it.

Proudly adopted Aubrey Huff. You can't beat that!

by Goofus on Mar 16, 2010 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I know, but one example of an average hitter nearly driving in 100 runs on a subpar offensive team does not make it unreasonable that Huff would do it this year. I think that’s using one example to prove too much. It may have been unreasonable that Molina even drove in that many runs in 1998, so it’s still unreasonable that Huff would do it this year.

Eagerly anticipating adding to my Giants family.

by giantsfansince1981 on Mar 16, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Good average and power will allow that to happen. But, as I’m sure you know, it doesn’t address the issue of that player torpedoing the offense behind him because he’s making an absurd number of outs.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

100 RBIs isn’t a meaningless stat. It means a lot for the team… if it happens that means that the team will have scored at least 100 runs! It’s meaningless if you’re trying to use it to show why a player is good. But it’s still important in a broader, retrospective sense if it actually does happen.

Expecting it to happen is another thing altogether.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

Wouldn’t it be cool if the Giants scored at least 100 runs next year?

Well the way the question was phrased

it appeared as though their argument was that Huff was a “good rbi guy” and that was where the “meaningless stat” line came from

Yeah, I’ve heard multiple people praise Huff as an RBI guy to say he was a good signing, so I think the point about it being meaningless is sound.
